    Preface

    A camera with 24 megapixels of resolution, continuous shooting at 12 frames per second, and a full range of professional features priced at less than $1,000 for the body alone? Built-in Wi-Fi? Full HD movie making? No wonder you’re excited about the new Sony a77 II camera! You don’t expect to take good pictures with such a camera—you demand outstanding photos. After all, this model is one of the most innovative cameras that Sony has ever introduced. But your gateway to pixel proficiency is dragged down by the scant instructions provided by Sony. You know everything you need to learn is in there, somewhere, but you don’t know where to start. In addition, the camera manual doesn’t offer much information on photography or digital photography. Nor are you interested in spending hours or days studying a comprehensive book on digital SLR photography that doesn’t necessarily apply directly to your a77 II.

    What you need is a guide that explains the purpose and function of this camera’s basic controls, how you should use them, and why. Ideally, there should be information about file formats, resolution, aperture/priority exposure, and special autofocus modes available, but you’d prefer to read about those topics only after you’ve had the chance to go out and take a few hundred great pictures with your new camera. Why isn’t there a book that summarizes the most important information in its first two or three chapters, with lots of full-color illustrations showing what your results will look like when you use this setting or that?

    Now there is such a book. If you want a quick introduction to focus controls, flash synchronization options, how to choose lenses, or which exposure modes are best, this book is for you. If you can’t decide on what basic settings to use with your camera because you can’t figure out how changing ISO or white balance or focus defaults will affect your pictures, you need this guide.

    Introduction

    Don’t be confused by the older SLT (for single lens translucent) nomenclature applied to the predecessor of this model, the Sony Alpha SLT-A77. Strictly speaking, the a77 II isn’t a traditional digital single lens reflex (dSLR) (which has a pivoting mirror that flips up during exposure to allow light to continue unimpeded to the sensor when the shutter opens). Sony’s SLT lineup replaced that moving part with an innovative semi-transparent mirror that remains fixed while you take pictures. That mirror allows 70 percent of the light passed by the lens to continue to the sensor, while reflecting makes it possible to use live view and advanced phase detection autofocus all the time.

    For most intents and purposes, a camera like the a77 II is simply a single lens reflex model in which the reflex mirror is stationary (except when it’s flipped up for sensor cleaning), and which uses an electronic viewfinder and/or back-panel LCD monitor for viewing instead of an optical system. In use, the a77 II operates much like a digital SLR. The two share many of the same controls. Most of us opt for eye-level viewing for shooting. Lenses can be changed. Many of their capabilities are the same. The chief difference is that the Sony a77 II and its stablemates have additional capabilities not found in the traditional digital SLR.

    As I noted earlier, the a77 II provides a live view image of what the sensor sees all the time, not just during a special live view mode. Your camera is able to use fast, accurate phase detection autofocus (which I’ll describe in detail in Chapter 6) all the time, even during video capture. Because it lacks a mirror that must be flipped up and down for each exposure, the a77 II is capable of much faster shooting rates—as fast as 12 frames per second—at full resolution. I’ll explain more about the camera’s technology later in this introduction.

    Who Am I?

    After spending years as the world’s most successful unknown author, I’ve become slightly less obscure in the past few years, thanks to a horde of camera guidebooks and other photographically oriented tomes. You may have seen my photography articles in Popular Photography, Rangefinder, Professional Photographer, and dozens of other photographic publications. But, first, and foremost, I’m a photojournalist and made my living in the field until I began devoting most of my time to writing books. Although I love writing, I’m happiest when I’m out taking pictures, which is why I spent this last winter ensconced in the Florida Keys, dividing my time between writing this book and taking photographs. You’ll find images of many of these visual treats within the pages of this book.

    Like all my digital photography books, this one was written by someone with an incurable photography bug. One of my first SLRs was a Minolta SRT-101, from the company whose technology was eventually absorbed by Sony in 2006. I’ve used a variety of newer models since then. I’ve worked as a sports photographer for an Ohio newspaper and for an upstate New York college. I’ve operated my own commercial studio and photo lab, cranking out product shots on demand and then printing a few hundred glossy 8 × 10s on a tight deadline for a press kit. I’ve served as a photo-posing instructor for a modeling agency. People have actually paid me to shoot their weddings and immortalize them with portraits. I even prepared press kits and articles on photography as a PR consultant for a formerly dominant (and now vestigial) Rochester, N.Y., company, which shall remain nameless. My trials and travails with imaging and computer technology have made their way into print in book form an alarming number of times.

    Like you, I love photography for its own merits, and I view technology as just another tool to help me get the images I see in my mind’s eye.     Your Sony a77 II in Brief

    If you’re eager to begin working with your new camera, you can jump from here directly to the first four chapters of the book, which include an introduction in Chapter 1; a roadmap of all the buttons and dials of your camera in Chapter 2; and explanations and recommendations for making the most important camera settings in Chapters 3 and 4. Or, you might want to skip those reference chapters and leap ahead to Chapter 5, the first of the practical chapters that will help you nail correct exposures, master the mysteries of autofocus, and begin using some advanced features of the Sony a77 II.

    However, if you’re totally new to the Sony A-mount lineup (as differentiated from the company’s E-mount mirrorless cameras), you’ll want to peruse the last few pages of this introduction, where I explain the key differences between SLR and SLT technology. I’ll wind up the section with something for Sony veterans, too, with an outline of the key differences between the current a77 II and its predecessor, the Sony Alpha SLT-A77.

    SLR vs. SLT

    If it looks like a duck, and talks like a duck, it can’t be a duck—because ducks don’t talk! (Sorry!) Similarly, if it looks like a digital SLR, and takes pictures almost exactly like a dSLR, it doesn’t actually need to be a digital SLR. When it comes to photographic technology, you can reach the same destination using different paths.

    Figure I.1 shows a hypersimplified diagram of a generic digital SLR at left, and a typical translucent mirror model on the right. Both types of cameras are equipped with interchangeable lenses, have mirrors, shutters, sensors, and integral autofocus systems. They differ, however, in their viewing systems and some other aspects, which I’ll explain next, using numbered components to outline exactly what is going on. Behold:

    1. Light emerges from lens.

    Digital SLR (left): Illumination strikes the mirror, reflecting almost all the light upward to the viewing system. A small amount of light is bounced down to the autofocus system located at the bottom of the mirror box.

    SLT camera (right): While 70 percent of the light passes through to the sensor behind the stationary mirror, 30 percent bounces up to the autofocus system.

    2. The miracle of autofocus happens.

    Within both cameras: Numerous rangefinder-like AF points are used to calculate focus. (See Chapter 6 for more information.)

    3. Correct exposure calculated.

    Digital SLR (left): The light meters of the camera’s exposure system measure and evaluate the correct f/stop, shutter speed, and/or ISO setting.

    SLT camera (right): Because the shutter in front of the sensor (represented in dark brown; the sensor is light brown) is always open until it closes/reopens to take the picture, the camera is able to figure exposure by measuring the actual light that reaches the sensor.

    4. The image the camera sees is relayed to your eye.

    Digital SLR (left): A prism or set of mirrors bounces the light from the mirror toward the optical viewfinder.

    SLT camera (right): The live image captured by the sensor is electrically conveyed to an electronic viewing system (as shown by the squiggly lines), located within the top panel of the camera (for the EVF—electronic viewfinder), or the LCD monitor on the back of the camera (not shown).

    5. You see the image and compose your photograph.

    It’s that simple. You’ll learn the advantages that the Sony translucent mirror system provides as we continue with this book.

    Differences Between the SLT-A77 and the a77 II

    Externally, the layout and controls of the two cameras are very similar, enough so that, until you dig deeper into the specifications, you might wonder whether it’s worthwhile to upgrade to the new version 24-megapixel camera from the earlier 24-megapixel model. Of course, there’s more to an upgrade than megapixels. As always, that decision will depend on whether the latest camera has features that you would like to have (or can’t live without). You should be aware that Sony has drastically modified the menu system with this upgrade, not only eliminating some menus entirely (there are no longer separate Movie, Memory Card, or Clock menus), but redistributing commands among the ones that remain. As well, there are lots of brand new options to work with, and many old options have been folded together to reduce clutter.

    Some features have been replaced or even removed entirely, either because they weren’t popular, didn’t work well, or are no longer necessary. Say goodbye to:

    Minolta-era improved flash shoe. Sony inherited the old iISO flash shoe invented in 1988 and used by no other vendors in the industry, and redubbed it the Auto-Lock Accessory Shoe. Though theoretically faster and more secure than the 100-year old industry-standard ISO 518 configuration, it kept you from attaching electronic flash units, radio triggers, and other accessories built for the standard shoe, unless you use one of the adapters that are available. The company switched to the more common standard shoe in 2012, adding extra contacts for microphones and other accessories. Now you’ll need an adapter if you own older Sony/Minolta flash units and want to use them with the a77 II.

    Built-in GPS. Removing the Global Positioning Position receiver solved several problems for Sony, including the requirement to produce special versions of their cameras for use in countries where GPS is tightly regulated, and the need to allot space within the camera shell for the electronic components. GPS is a useful feature for tagging your photos with the location where they were taken, so I’m not happy this feature was removed.

    3D Sweep Panorama. Oddly enough, the popularity of 3D tends to wax and wane, but never gains a solid foothold, so the elimination of this feature is as much about the indifference most camera buyers have for it than the lack of convenient ways to use or view your 3D images.

    Focus Assist Lamp. While the a77 II retains its self-timer LED, the focus assist lamp that helped the camera focus in dim lighting conditions is gone, largely because the improved autofocus system of the camera almost eliminates the need for it. However, if the built-in flash is elevated, it will emit a brief burst to help with focusing, as required, and the AF assist features of connected accessory flashes also continue to operate as advertised.

    Some minor options. A few obscure or little-used options are gone. Only 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratios are available for shooting; 4:3 and 1:1 proportions are no longer offered. The Anti Motion Blur and High Sensitivity Scene modes, which didn’t work very well to begin with, have been deleted, too.

    In terms of substantive additions, however, there are a few cool changes to consider.

    Autofocus improvements. The most valuable upgrades come from improved autofocus. The a77 II ups the anti from its predecessor’s 19 focus points to 79 points. This camera is dramatically better with focus under low light conditions, and there are new options to help you nail focus, including separate lock-on focus tracking features for still photos and movies, to reduce the odds of the AF system being fooled by intervening objects. There’s also an AF Range control to reduce the focus hunting that sometimes occurs with macro or telephoto lenses.

    New sensor. Although the a77 II retains the 24 MP of resolution of its predecessor, it’s a better 24 megapixels. There’s lower noise at high ISO settings, and microlenses on the sensor focus incoming light on the individual photosites.

    Auto ISO in Manual exposure mode. There are times when you want to lock in a specific f/stop, say, to achieve shallow (or extensive) depth-of-field and, at the same time, use a particular shutter speed for creative or practical reasons. Manual exposure can easily lock in both, of course, but the ability to activate Auto ISO in Manual mode lets the a77 II adjust the exposure for changing light conditions. In effect, this feature transforms manual exposure into a semi-automatic mode on a par with Program, Aperture priority, or Shutter priority modes.

    Wi-Fi and NFC (Near Field Communications). The ability to transfer images from your camera to a nearby computer, smartphone, or tablet without a physical connection is highly prized in these days of Instagram, Facebook, and other social media.

    Expanded buffer. Only a few years ago, the ability to snap off 24 MP images at 12 frames a second was unheard of. The expanded buffer of the a77 II means that you’ll be able to capture more of them before your camera insists you stop shooting while it offloads some of those shots to your memory card.

    Zebra stripes! Veteran videographers have been using the zebra stripe alternative to highlight blinkies for years, and now Sony is adding it to its still cameras. The stripes are easier to see when you want an overexposure alert, and the a77 II lets you customize the level at which the warning appears.

    Audio monitoring. Sony hasn’t given us the headphone jack that many competing cameras have, but it does give you a visual clue with its VU (volume unit) display on the LCD monitor. Not as convenient as hearing the audio for yourself, but it’s a welcome improvement.

    Getting Started with Your Sony a77 II

    This chapter is a Quick Start you can use to learn all the basic steps you need to know to begin taking pictures. The Sony A77 II is a remarkably versatile camera, so each of the features introduced here have many other options that I’ll explain in subsequent chapters of the book. In the sections that follow, I’ll show you how to make the most basic settings, such as setting exposure, but won’t weigh you down by listing all the different ways you can do these things, nor every single variation.

    Of course, I fully expect that you took several hundred or a thousand (or two) photos before you ever cracked the cover of this book—for several reasons. First, and foremost, the Sony a77 II camera is not only versatile, it’s incredibly easy to use, especially for the absolute beginner. Even the rawest digital camera newbie can rotate the mode dial to the aqua Auto position and go out and begin taking great pictures. Getting to that point by charging the battery, mounting a lens, and inserting a Secure Digital or Memory Stick memory card isn’t exactly rocket science, either. Sony has cleverly marked the power switch (located concentrically with the shutter release button) with large ON and OFF labels, and the bright red button labeled MOVIE to the right of the viewfinder window will provide a major clue for anyone interested in taking advantage of this camera’s advanced motion-picture capabilities.

    So, budding photographers are likely to muddle their way through getting the camera revved up and working well enough to take a bunch of still pictures or video sequences without the universe collapsing. Eventually, though, many may turn to this book when they realize that they can do an even better job with a little guidance.

    Second, I know that many of you will be previous owners of the predecessors of this camera, including the SLT series that included this camera’s immediate predecessor, the Sony SLT-A77. The SLT nomenclature is gone completely, and the Alpha label deprecated to a lowercase a. So you may be a newcomer or an old friend of the company’s cameras.

    Most of the basic operations of the Sony a77 II are quite similar to those of any previous model you might have owned. As I noted in the Introduction to this book, the semi-transparent (not translucent) mirror does not swing up and down like the mirror in an old-school SLR. Rather, it stays put and it allows 70 percent of the light that strikes it to pass through to the 24.3 MP CMOS sensor while the remaining light is reflected upward to a large 79-point phase detection AF area. This AF area always receives light, and as a result, this camera can focus with lightning speed for both still photography and movies, up until the moment of exposure. The penalty for this magic is about a 30 percent reduction in light for live view and image capture, but without a swinging mirror and related optical system, the sensor is always receiving light. You won’t notice the 30 percent light loss, however, because the a77 II simply amplifies the signal to give you a bright electronic viewfinder/LCD image for composing your photo.

    Finally, I realize that most of you didn’t buy this book at the same time you purchased your Sony a77 II. As much as I’d like to picture thousands of avid photographers marching out of their camera stores with an a77 II box under one arm, and my book in hand, I know that’s not going to happen all the time. A large number of you had your camera for a week, or two, or a month, became comfortable with it, and sought out this book in order to learn more. So, a chapter on setup seems like too little, too late, doesn’t it?

    In practice, though, it’s not a bad idea, once you’ve taken a few orientation pictures with your camera, to go back and review the basic operations of the camera from the beginning, if only to see if you’ve missed something. This chapter is my opportunity to review the setup procedures for the camera for those among you who are already veteran users, and to help ease the more timid (and those who have never worked with a digital camera with interchangeable lenses before) into the basic pre-flight checklist that needs to be completed before you really spread your wings and take off. For the uninitiated, as easy as it is to use initially, the Sony a77 II does have lots of dials, buttons, and settings that might not make sense at first, but will surely become second nature after you’ve had a chance to review the instructions in this chapter.

    But don’t fret about wading through a manual to find out what you must know to take those first few tentative snaps. I’m going to help you hit the ground running with this chapter (or keep on running if you’ve already jumped right in). If you haven’t had the opportunity to use your a77 II yet, I’ll help you set up your camera and begin shooting in minutes. You won’t find a lot of detail in this chapter. Indeed, I’m going to tell you just what you absolutely must understand, accompanied by some interesting tidbits that will help you become acclimated. I’ll go into more depth and even repeat some of what I explain here in later chapters, so you don’t have to memorize everything you see. Just relax, follow a few easy steps, and then go out and begin taking your best shots—ever.

    Your Out-of-Box Experience

    Your Sony a77 II comes in an impressive box filled with stuff, including connecting cords and lots of paperwork. The most important components are the camera and lens, battery, battery charger, and, if you’re the nervous type, the neck strap. You’ll also need a Secure Digital or Memory Stick card, as one is not included. If you purchased your Alpha from a camera shop, as I did, the store personnel probably attached the neck strap for you, ran through some basic operational advice that you’ve already forgotten, tried to sell you a Secure Digital card, and then, after they’d given you all the help you could absorb, sent you on your way with a handshake.

    Perhaps you purchased your Sony a77 II from one of those mass merchandisers that also sell washing machines and vacuum cleaners. In that case, you might have been sent on your way with only the handshake, or, maybe, not even that if you resisted the efforts to sell you an extended warranty. You save a few bucks at the big-box stores, but you don’t get the personal service a professional photo retailer provides. It’s your choice. There’s a third alternative, of course. You might have purchased your camera from a mail order or Internet source, and your camera arrived in a big brown (or purple/red) truck. Your only interaction when you took possession of your camera was to scrawl your signature on an electronic clipboard.

    In all three cases, the first thing to do is to carefully unpack the camera and double-check the contents with the checklist on one side of the box (and on page 15 of the Sony reference manual). While this level of setup detail may seem as superfluous as the instructions on a bottle of shampoo, checking the contents first is always a good idea. No matter who sells a camera, it’s common to open boxes, use a particular camera for a demonstration, and then repack the box without replacing all the pieces and parts afterwards. Someone might actually have helpfully checked out your camera on your behalf—and then mispacked the box. It’s better to know now that something is missing so you can seek redress immediately, rather than discover two months from now that the USB cable you thought you’d never use (but now must have) was never in the box.

    So, check the box at your earliest convenience, and make sure you have (at least) the following:

    Sony a77 II camera. This is hard to miss. The camera is the main reason you laid out the big bucks, and it is tucked away inside a nifty bubble-wrap envelope you should save for protection in case the Alpha needs to be sent in for repair. It almost goes without saying that you should check out the camera immediately, making sure the color LCD on the back isn’t scratched or cracked, the memory card and battery compartment door opens properly, and, when a charged battery is inserted and lens mounted, the camera powers up and reports for duty. Out-of-the-box defects in these areas are rare, but they can happen. It’s probably more common that your dealer played with the camera or, perhaps, it was a customer return. That’s why it’s best to buy your Alpha from a retailer you trust to supply a factory-fresh camera.

    Eyepiece cup. This slide-on soft-rubber eyecup should be attached to the viewfinder when you receive the camera. It helps you squeeze your eye tightly against the window, excluding extraneous light, and also protects your eyeglasses (if you wear them) from scratching.

    Body cap. The plastic twist-off body cap keeps dust from entering the camera when no lens is mounted. Even with automatic sensor cleaning built into the a77 II, you’ll want to keep the amount of dust to a minimum. The body cap belongs in your camera bag if you contemplate the need to travel with the lens removed.

    Lens (if purchased). The Sony a77 II may come as a body only, or in a kit with the SAL-1650 DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM zoom lens. Or, you may purchase the camera with another lens, as some retailers offer it with an SAL 18135 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom or some other lens combo. The lens will come with a lens cap on the front, and a rear lens cap aft.

    Battery pack NP-FM500H. The power source for your Sony a77 II is packaged separately. The battery should be charged as soon as possible (as described next) and inserted in the camera. It’s smart to have more than one battery pack (a spare costs about $60, although the Sony list price is about $80), so you can continue shooting when your battery is discharged or, after many uses, peters out entirely. Make sure you get this model number of battery; it is different from the batteries used in some earlier Sony dSLRs (though it’s the same one used by the Sony SLT-77, SLT-A65, A58, A55, DSLR-A560/A580, and a few other models).

    Battery charger BC-VM10A. This battery charger will be included. Outside of the United States and Canada, the camera ships with a power cord that attaches to the charger (which allows Sony to package each charger with a cord that fits the specific power outlets of the country where it’s sold). In the United States, the charger is plugged in using its integrated US-style AC plug.

    Shoulder strap. Sony provides you with a suitable neck or shoulder strap, emblazoned with Sony advertising. While I am justifiably proud of owning a fine Sony camera, I never attach the factory straps to my cameras, and instead opt for a more serviceable strap from UPstrap (www.upstrap-pro.com). If you carry your camera over one shoulder, as many do, I particularly recommend UPstrap (shown in Figure 1.1). It has a patented non-slip pad that offers reassuring traction and eliminates the contortions we sometimes go through to keep the camera from slipping off. I know several photographers who refuse to use anything else. If you do purchase an UPstrap, be sure to tell photographer-inventor Al Stegmeyer that I sent you hence.

    Micro-B USB cable. This is a USB cable that can be used to link your Sony a77 II to a computer, and it is especially useful when you need to transfer pictures but don’t have a card reader handy.

    Paperwork. My Sony a77 II was destined for the US/Canada market, and so included brief printed instruction manuals in English and French (numbering ninety-one and quatre vingt dix neuf pages, respectively). In my box there was also an offer of 15 percent off my next accessory purchase (aux clients du Canada seulement), a bilingual Limited Warranty, a Wi-Fi Connection/One Touch (NFC) Guide, a tempting brochure showing available lenses and accessories, and a mysterious tip sheet detailing How To Catch Subjects Moving Even Faster in 25 different languages. If you bought the camera in a kit with a lens, you should also find a folded instruction sheet for the lens.

    Initial Setup

    The initial setup of your Sony a77 II is fast and easy. Basically, you just need to charge the battery, attach a lens, and insert a memory card. I’ll address each of these steps separately, but if you already feel you can manage these setup tasks without further instructions, feel free to skip this section entirely. You should at least skim its contents, however, because I’m going to list a few options that you might not be aware of.

    Battery Included

    Your Sony a77 II is a sophisticated hunk of machinery and electronics, but it needs a charged battery to function, so rejuvenating the NP-FM500H lithium-ion battery pack furnished with the camera should be your first step. A fully charged power source should be good for approximately 480 shots under normal temperature conditions, based on standard tests defined by the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) document DC-002. If most of your pictures use the built-in flash, you can expect somewhat fewer shots before it’s time for a recharge. While those figures sound like a lot of shooting, activities like picture review can use up more power than you might expect. If your pictures are important to you, always take along one spare, fully charged battery.

    And remember that all rechargeable batteries undergo some degree of self-discharge just sitting idle in the camera or in the original packaging. Lithium-ion power packs of this type typically lose a small amount of their charge every day, even when the camera isn’t turned on. Li-ion cells lose their power through a chemical reaction that continues when the camera is switched off. So, it’s very likely that the battery purchased with your camera, even if charged at the factory, has begun to poop out after the long sea voyage on a banana boat (or, more likely, a trip by jet plane followed by a sojourn in a warehouse), so you’ll want to revive it before going out for some serious shooting.

    Charging the Battery

    When the battery is inserted into the charger properly (it’s impossible to insert it incorrectly), a Charge light begins glowing yellow-orange, without flashing. It continues to glow until the battery completes the charge and the lamp turns off. (See Figure 1.2.) It should take about 175 minutes to completely rejuvenate a fully discharged battery.

    If the charging lamp flashes when you insert the battery, that flashing indicates an error condition. Make sure you have the correct model number battery and that the charger’s contacts (the shiny metal prongs that connect to the battery) are clean.

    When the battery is charged, slide the latch on the bottom of the camera, open the battery door, and ease the battery in with the three contact openings facing down into the compartment so they will meet up with the contacts at the bottom of the compartment (see Figure 1.3). To remove the battery, you must press a blue lever in the battery compartment that prevents the pack from slipping out when the door is opened. (See Figure 1.4.)

    Final Steps

    Your Sony a77 II is almost ready to fire up and shoot. You’ll need to select and mount a lens, adjust the viewfinder for your vision, and insert a memory card. Each of these steps is easy, and if you’ve used any Sony camera in the past, you already know exactly what to do. I’m going to provide a little extra detail for those of you who are new to the Sony or digital worlds.

    Mounting the Lens

    As you’ll see, my recommended lens mounting procedure emphasizes protecting your equipment from accidental damage, and minimizing the intrusion of dust. If your camera has no lens attached, select the lens you want to use and loosen (but do not remove) the rear lens cap. I generally place the lens I am planning to mount vertically in a slot in my camera bag, where it’s protected from mishaps but ready to pick up quickly. By loosening the rear lens cap, you’ll be able to lift it off the back of the lens at the last instant, so the rear element of the lens is covered until then.

    After that, remove the body cap by rotating the cap toward the shutter release button. You should always mount the body cap when there is no lens on the camera, because it helps keep dust out of the interior of the camera, where it can settle on the mirror, and potentially find its way past the shutter onto the sensor. (While the Alpha’s automatic sensor cleaning mechanism works fine, the less dust it has to contend with, the better.) The body cap also protects the vulnerable mirror from damage caused by intruding objects (including your fingers, if you’re not cautious).

    Once the body cap has been removed, remove the rear lens cap from the lens, set it aside, and then mount the lens on the camera by matching the red-orange alignment indicator on the lens barrel with the red-orange dot on the camera’s lens mount (see Figure 1.5). Rotate the lens clockwise, toward the side of the camera with the mode dial, until the lens seats securely. (Don’t press the lens release button during mounting.) If a lens hood is bayoneted on the lens in the reversed position (which makes the lens/hood combination more compact for transport), twist it off and remount with the rim facing outward (see Figure 1.6). A lens hood protects the front of the lens from accidental bumps, and reduces flare caused by extraneous light arriving at the front element of the lens from outside the picture area.

    Adjusting Diopter Correction

    Those of us with less than perfect eyesight can often benefit from a little optical correction in the viewfinder. Your contact lenses or glasses may provide all the correction you need, but if you are a glasses wearer and want to use the Sony a77 II without your glasses, you can take advantage of the camera’s built-in diopter adjustment correction to match that of your glasses or your eyesight with your glasses on. Turn on the camera, look into the electronic viewfinder, focus your eye on the numbers and other indicators on the viewfinder’s screen, then rotate the diopter adjustment dial (see Figure 1.7) while looking into the viewfinder until the numbers and indicators appear sharp.

    Inserting a Memory Card

    You can’t take actual photos without a memory card inserted in your Sony a77 II. If you don’t have a card installed, the camera will upbraid you with a flashing No Card warning shown at the upper left of the LCD and viewfinder. If you press the shutter button, though, the shutter will operate and it will sound as if a picture has been taken. If you didn’t notice the No Card warning, you will be faced with a sad situation when you try to play back the image you thought you had recorded. So, your final step will be to insert a memory card.

    The Sony a77 II accepts both Secure Digital (or Secure Digital High Capacity) and Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo (or Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo) cards. It doesn’t matter which type you use, but you can only use one or the other; there is only one memory card slot in the camera. If you decide on the Sony Memory Stick option, you probably want a PRO-HG Duo card, which you can get in a capacity of up to 32GB. If you go the Secure Digital (SD) route, there are several options. The most common SD card comes in sizes up to 32GB. If you really want to flex your storage muscles, you can spring for one of the newest types of SD card, called the SDXC, for extended capacity. SDXC cards are currently available in capacities of 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, which is more than enough for any application, except maybe doing photo IDs for the entire population of a small city. Theoretically, these cards can be made in capacities up to 2TB (terabytes), the equivalent of about 2,000GB. Nowadays, all new computers should be compatible with SDHC cards. You might need to get a new card reader if you are using a very old reader, because the older SD card readers cannot read SDXC cards.

    Whether you ultimately opt for a Memory Stick PRO Duo or a variety of SD card, either type of card fits in the same slot underneath the door on the right side of the camera. You should only remove the memory card when the camera is switched off. Insert the memory card with the label facing the back of the camera (for a Secure Digital card), or toward the front of the camera if inserting a Memory Stick. In either case, the card should be oriented so the edge with the metal contacts goes into the slot first. (See Figure 1.8.)

    Close the door, and your pre-flight checklist is done! (I’m going to assume you remember to remove the lens cap when you’re ready to take a picture!) When you want to remove the memory card later, just press down on the card edge that protrudes from the slot, and it will pop right out.

    Turning on the Power

    Slide the On/Off switch that surrounds the shutter release button clockwise, to the On position. The camera will remain on or in a standby mode until you manually turn it off. After one minute of idling, the a77 II goes into the standby mode to save battery power. Just tap the shutter release button to bring it back to life. (The one-minute time is the default; you can adjust this setting to as long as 30 minutes through the menu system, as I discuss in Chapter 4.)

    When the camera first powers up, you may be asked to set the date and time, using the Setup menu, which has an icon resembling a tool box at the far right of the menu tabs. The procedure is fairly self-explanatory (although I’ll explain it in detail in Chapter 4). You can use the left/right multi-selector control to navigate among the Daylight Savings Time setting, date, year, time, and date format; and you can use the up/down multi-selector control to enter the correct settings. When finished, press the center button, choose Enter on the screen that pops up, and press the center button again to confirm the date.

    TAKING CONTROL

    Sony’s nomenclature for the a77 II’s controls can be confusing. The large joystick-like control on the back of the camera is officially called the multi-selector. It is surrounded by a non-moving ring with directional arrows pointing to the north, south, east, and west positions. The multi-selector can also be pressed in diagonal directions. I’ll just say Press up/down or Press left/right when you need to use the directional controls, rather than state Press the multi-selector up or down each time. The multi-selector can also be pressed inward to act as an Enter button, and in that mode will be referred to as the center button or multi-selector center button. Oh, and those small wheels on the front and back of the camera are called the front and rear control dials, respectively.
