The blue and red lights gave off an eerie, blinking glow to the small town of Coal Dust. The lights themselves were not necessarily strange, but their numbers were unusual for the town, and odder still was the silence. There were no sirens, no screeching tires, no engines racing.

At least Dean found the scene strange as he pulled his truck into the hospital lot and parked near the emergency room. Twenty years of experience in law enforcement had shown him plenty, but never before had he experienced so many official vehicles and ambulances in one place, all with their lights revolving over and over, but none of the sirens blaring. Even more unsettling than the quiet was the lack of activity. All these vehicles, but there was not a face to be seen in the parking lot.

    Sheriff.

Dean closed the truck’s door and turned to the voice.

Ron, he said to the young deputy in uniform approaching from the open glass doors of the emergency room.

Ron Gantry rounded the front of the vehicle and came to a stop. Now that he was up close, Dean could see the man was visibly upset. There were no tears, but it was obvious the young deputy was shaken.

Is it that bad? the sheriff asked.

The deputy’s voice was low, as if he feared who might be listening. We’ve got four dead.

Four? Dean said. Dispatch told me there were six.

Ron shook his head. The girl has been telling us there were six, but we’ve only found four so far.

    All of ’em college students?

Ron nodded. One of the girls is still missing. Our witness tells us she’s dead. And the caretaker is supposedly dead, too.

This time the sheriff nodded and motioned towards the hospital. Yeah, dispatch filled me in on all the details. Why don’t we go inside and get some coffee?

They headed that direction, but as they neared the glass doors the deputy stopped and looked to the sheriff.
