About this ebook

You Shall Not Make Idols: Graven Image

Roxanne, a single mother, must prove herself to the community and Ruth Miller, her rival for Amos’ affections, first. After receiving a visit from Ruth, the Bishop wisely places her in charge of Roxanne’s instruction, and Roxanne and Amos are put to the test as Levi and Helen’s impending marriage places pressures on the young couple. Bound by his family’s love and risking all, Amos patiently waits for Roxanne to let go of her former self. In a lesson gleaned from The Second Commandment, the people of Holmes County realize God’s wisdom and love.

    LETTING GO OF THE PAST

You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. Exodus 20:4-6

Mid-day, three weeks after her arrival in Holmes County, Roxanne met with the bishop, Amos by her side. Helen had kept Leah with her for the day, and so they went, hand-in-hand, to secure their future together.

He was an elderly man, by Roxanne’s standards; his beard, the color of pristine snow, curled slightly away from his neck. He wore a simple black hat, white shirt and black trousers held with black suspenders, and Roxanne thought him the most frightening man she’d ever seen when he opened his front door. She was here to answer his questions before making her plea, hoping upon hope that he would be open to her joining the church.

The living room was bare by English standards, save for a brown, braided rug,  a wooden coffee table, a blue textured couch and a roll-top desk in the far corner. An oil lamp, black from soot, set adjacent to a mound of papers, and Roxanne thought it a certain fire hazard.
