'Pendragan' is the pen-name for children's fiction-writing duo Penny Williams and Dragan Matijevic. They also write independantly as Penny Williams and Dragan Matijevic (adult fiction, self-help and cookery books). They launched Pendragan Publishing as an independent, international publishing platform for storytellers around the world. If you would like news about forthcoming publications, or books in the works, or if you have questions about any of the characters, please let us know. Dragan Matijevic Dragan started writing during the war that broke up Yugoslavia in the early '90s. Living in England with his one-year old son at the time, Dragan wondered how he could help his people in Croatia. The solution turned out to be magic! Dragan founded a theatre charity called Rise Phoenix, wrote his first puppet play for children, created his own puppets, and together with a bunch of troubadours, jesters and jugglers, drove a truck down to the war zone. In 1993, "Peppe the Magician" began to appear in refugee camps throughout Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo. Small puppets and theatre plays gave way to giant puppets and theatre spectacles. Children who had lost everything rediscovered the ability to laugh. Adults slowly joined in. One Croatian soldier shouted from the audience, "Croatia needs puppets, not guns!" Quentin Blake agreed and gave permission for Rise Phoenix to take his Big Friendly Giant to the war zone. Dragan went on to write and perform in many other children's plays, quite a few of which are now stories and novels. When not writing, Dragan teaches at The Artisan Bakery School, and continues to perform as the magician Sol Ray. Penny Williams As a child, Penny would row ashore to school from the sailing boat she grew up on with her family. This gave her a quirky view on life, encouraged by the stories she heard from blue-water sailors arriving in Falmouth Harbour. Penny grew up with a hunger for distant horizons and foreign shores. Her explorations took her to Europe, Africa, South America, Asia and even Antarctica. But her biggest adventure, which was falling in love with a Croatian magician (Dragan), happened right on her own front door step in England! So far, their story includes building their own woodfired oven for The Artisan Bakery School, moving to a crazy old cottage in Devon, taking an Invisible Man to Singapore, working with children in Sri Lanka and India and kayaking round the islands of Dalmatia. Penny also runs a professional copywriting, editing and translation business. She and Dragan write together to celebrate the magic that happens in real life. *** Connect With Us *** penny@pendragan.com www.pendragan.com

The King's Bump - Pendragan
Chapter 1: The King Bumps his Head
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, everyone was happy all the time! The people loved their king, because he loved them. He was kind and fair and generous, and he laughed so much every day - shaking all over, holding his stomach, happy tears sprouting on his cheeks - that they called him King Hilarious the Great.
The very funniest days of the year in this happy kingdom were the annual Laughing Tournaments, with the most amusing and amazing prizes going to the person who made everyone laugh the longest. No one used the word 'lovely' because everything was so funny, they just said 'laugh-ly'.
LaughlyIf ever anyone in the land did anything wrong, which happened very rarely, they were taken to the Court of Laughing Matters. Since the only reason anyone would do anything wrong was because they were not happy, steps were taken to make them laugh again, and the whole thing would be forgiven and forgotten.
This remarkable country became famous all over the world for its jokers and jesters and its especially jolly Laughing Cordial, but in fact everyone who lived there loved to laugh. No one was angry, or frightened, or mean. Life was just too funny!
But then the King bumped his head and everything changed.
Here is how it happened.
***
One evening, breathless from laughing all day, King Hilarious and Queen Merry were on their way to bed.
My dearest, just look at this!
giggled Queen Merry, who was walking down the corridor behind the King.
What’s that, my little cabbage?
asked the King fondly, glancing over his shoulder, but still walking towards the bedroom.
Look at that laugh-ly flower!
exclaimed the Queen, pointing at a living yellow rose growing out of the castle wall.
Oh, yes, isn’t that funny?
said the King. The wallpaper’s come to life! That’s flower power, that is! Ha,ha,ha!
Gurgling at his own joke, still talking over his shoulder, the King suddenly bumped into the stone archway of the royal chambers.
Ouch!
yelled the King, grabbing his head, What’s going on? I can hear bells!
But there are no bells ringing, dear,
smiled Queen Merry.
I can see birds and stars too!
moaned the King.
The Queen started to laugh, but the look on her beloved husband’s face wiped the smiles from her cheeks. King Hilarious was red with rage!
I knew that blasted arch was going to get me one day!
bellowed the King. Who put it there? I’ll chop his head off!
The Queen was shocked. Hilarious, dearest, such language! Now, now, let me have a look.
The King took his hand off his forehead. The Queen winced and put her hand over her mouth. On one side of the King’s forehead there was a big, bright-red bump. It was getting bigger and redder by the second.
Oh dear, my darling, that’s quite a nasty bump. Are you all right?
Of course I’m not all right! Are you stupid?
snapped the King.
The Queen was simply astonished. Her husband had never been rude to her in his life!
You really are not well, my dear Hilarious,
said the Queen, pulling herself together. Let’s go and find some ointment for your... ahem... little bump… and all will be well in the morning, you’ll see.
Chapter 2: The Bump Takes Over
However, all was not well in the morning.
Overnight, the bump on the King’s forehead had grown absolutely enormous. And not only that, but it kept changing colour, from one second to the next. From red to purple to green to orange and back again, it flashed through all the colours of the rainbow! It was really rather amusing.
But the King himself was not amused. In fact, he lost his sense of humour completely. He wasn’t just grumpy, he was angry, all the time. He swore, cursed and threw things at everyone who came near him, especially anyone who dared to smile at him or laugh in his presence, because he thought they were all laughing at his colourful, flashing bump.
BumpNo matter how much anyone tried to be nice to him, and explain that they weren’t laughing at the bump, King Hilarious was snappy with Queen Merry, tetchy with his children, angry with the castle servants and absolutely furious with the whole of the rest of the country. But it didn’t
