Chapter 1. From Philadelphia to Leadville, 1859

Cressie sat in the stagecoach wishing she was on horseback instead of trapped in the little box with the two other passengers. One of the men sat across from her and he had his feet propped on the seat beside her, and the other man simply had his head bowed with his hat covering his face. Cressie was claustrophobic in the box of the stagecoach, but she was going to have to make the best of it. She had a lot of miles to cover before she reached her destination.

Cressie shifted her weight on the hard little seat and took out her purse. Inside the purse were some letters of correspondence between her and her future husband. She had read each of the letters at least a thousand times, but she still liked to read them.

Cressie opened the bundle of letters and took out the one where Allen Ward had told her about himself. She loved to read that one. I am not a rich rancher, so if you are looking to come to Colorado and meet up with a rich cattle baron, you will be sadly disappointed. I have a rather small ranch. I have the original 640 acres that I received from the government. In Colorado, that amount of land is really just a drop in the bucket, but it is enough to make a decent living off of if a man is diligent about his work.

I am a God fearing man. I do not abide in drinking, swearing, or taking the Lord’s name in vain. I keep the Sabbath holy and attend church services as often as possible. When I have children, I will want them to be well-versed in the books of the Bible, and the word of God.

I am a very lonely man. I desire female companionship, and someone
