About this ebook

Ideally the play should be performed in a real pub, with the audience comprising regular patrons. This would ensure that he audience is appropriately mature.
From the mind that brought us Hendrych and Kroupa comes another unconventional adult night at the theatre. They say, "In vino veritas"... and a student reunion puts the old saying to the test. But as the gathering gets drunker by the minute, the truth serum kicks in with devastating results for at least one person at the table.
"The Cemetery" and 'The Confession", should be performed together in one evening, as a double-bill. "The Cemetery" as the first, followed after the usual intermission by "The Confession". TRENT in these plays is the same actor. Each play is performed without an intermission. The scenes are changed quickly in the full view of the audience, which is entertained by the "Art of the Fugue"

    POSTMISTRESS

    ACT 1

[SCENE. A room with Spartan furnishings. The dominant feature is a comfortable but worn-out armchair, opposite a much smaller, simpler and older armchair covered in aged beige vinyl. A plain bookshelf containing a number of books on psychiatry is against the wall. Next to the large armchair is another bookshelf. By the window facing the room is an ordinary writing desk with a portable computer, telephone, and a lot of manila-folders.]

DOCTOR. [An older man wearing an old sweater with frayed elbows, and corduroy trousers. His shoes are polished. He is sitting in a large armchair looking through some letters and papers. He gets up and goes to the door. Opens it and calls.] Mr Court, please came in. [Waits until TRENT comes is. Points to a smaller chair] Please have a seat. [The DOCTOR sits in his chair and scrutinises TRENT. He waits until TRENT sits down] So, TRENT, how has your day been so far? Can I call you Trent? Or would you prefer Mr Court?

TRENT. [He is a TRENT. between 25 and 30 years of age, casually dressed in the current fashion. He wears jeans. He seems uncomfortable] TRENT is good enough. Okay? [Pause]

DOCTOR. I am looking through your referral. You’ve got a history of problems. Tell me about it.

TRENT. There is not much to tell. You are the expert, Mister PSYCHIATRIST. It wasn't my idea to come here and waste your time and my money. I'm okay.

DOCTOR. Your doctor doesn't think so. How is he treating you?

TRENT. She! Dr Fisher is a woman, a good doctor, but this time she made a blunder. I'm fine. Can I go?

DOCTOR. Good doctors do not usually make mistakes. She writes that you’ve had periods of fear, nightmares, and anxiety attacks. That is cause for concern. Did you follow her instructions? She prescribed you some medication, didn't she?

TRENT. [Tensely] Yes, she gave me some tablets - Xanax. I took them as she told me to.

DOCTOR. And did it help? Did you feel better?

TRENT. No, it didn't, I felt the same. Couldn't sleep, got headaches; no balance to speak of, upsurges of spontaneous sadness. Woke up with fear of what would happen during the day; wishing to stay in bed the whole day.

    DOCTOR. Then you aren’t okay?

TRENT. Yes. I am. Don't try to catch onto my words. I know what I said.

DOCTOR. I respect what you've been saying. But when it comes to your health, please let me form my own opinion. Let me be the judge. Xanax is a serious drug not prescribed lightly. [Pause] Do you worry about anything in particular?

TRENT. No, I gave up worrying a long time ago.
