Author

Vincent Morrone

Born and raised in Brooklyn NY, Vincent Morrone now resides in Upstate NY with his wife. (Although he can still speak fluent Brooklynese.) His twin daughters remain not only his biggest fans, but usually are the first to read all of his work. Their home is run and operated for the comfort and convenience of their dogs. Vincent has been writing fiction, poetry and song lyrics for as long as he can remember, most of which involve magical misfits, paranormal prodigies and even on occasion superheroes and their sidekicks.  As they say in Brooklyn: Yo, you got something to say? Vincent would love to hear from you at Vincent@vincentmorrone.com

YOU MIGHT THINK A PERSON who witnessed her own murder when she was six wouldn’t scare easily. But you’d be wrong. The idea of baring my secrets to a stranger was frightening. I’m not the lie-back-and-tell-me-about-your-life kind of girl. But, as I stood in the office of one of my school’s most respected counselors, I knew I was going to have to do a little soul baring.

I sat down opposite Mary and tried to look comfortable. I was terrified. Not by Mary herself. In a way, I was more comfortable around someone like her than my own parents. But it was the fact that she was going to want to discuss things I don’t ever talk about. She knew enough already that she would believe me. And I knew without a doubt that nothing I said would ever be repeated.

Mary was dressed in a long-sleeved white dress, with a pretty, powder blue pattern on it. Her black hair reached the bottom tip of her shoulders. A friendly smile graced her face. It’s good to see you, Miss Blackburn, she said.

Bristol, I said. Please, call me Bristol.

All right, Bristol. So, nobody knows that you’re here with me? Mary asked.

Nobody except Ricky, I responded. There are no secrets between us.

    Is Ricky your boyfriend?

That earned a laugh from me. Mary raised an eyebrow in response.

Sorry, I said. Ricky is my hamster. And he’d probably say he’s out of my league. Anyway, I don’t date.

    Ever?

    I shook my head.

    Why not?

I just... don’t, I said. I had my reasons, but I didn’t want to get into them. Thankfully, she let it drop, although I could tell she was filing it away for later.

    "Your parents won’t worry
