    Saint Paul's Cathedral

    London England

Blonde twenty-seven year old Annelisse knelt at the altar in the cooling confines of Saint Paul's Cathedral in central London trying to forget about her dismal Valentine’s Day. No man presented her with flowers or candy and her mom, Lucasta, stuffed yet more food on her dinner plate last night. The quiet of Stain Paul's enveloped her and eased her bruised feelings.

Its two domes acted like protective shields from the harsh outside world. No one here dared to call her a balloon or assume her pregnancy. Her corset, or lack thereof, matter not to Father Donnel who ten minutes before clasped his aged white hands over the young man and woman standing before him at the altar getting married.

Then, Annelisse slipped into the second pew to watch lovers wed. Drawing attention to herself was the last thing on her mind. The scene of marriage made single Annelisse happy. What a joy to have walked in on a twelve o'clock wedding in Saint Paul's Cathedral, in Central London of all places. Her mind settled as Father Donnel voice had said the vows quietly.

Now, as Father Donnel escorted the couple out of Saint Paul's Cathedral, into the harsh world, tears welled up, little by little in Annelisse's pale blue eyes as she approached the altar.

Her eyes witnessed more heartbreak than most people. She lived in a small Tudor house two hours away. Her mom, Lucasta, worried about the shrinking 1867 residential district as London grew and grew.

Her mom kept stuffing Annelisse with more and more food. ‘You'll never get married being so skinny’, Lucasta said, thirty pounds ago. Annelisse' current one hundred and sixty pound weight felt very attractive enough to get married. In fact, she worried her mom over fed her. Sometimes, she pushed herself away from their large kitchen table feeling stuffed, sluggish. Five feet eight inches hardly spread out one hundred and sixty pounds on her frame. Men used to look at her with desiring eyes. She missed their lingering gaze of want.

The floor of Saint Paul's Cathedral pressed on her knees. She didn't care. God help me, Annelisse pleaded. Help me find a man. Any man. I don't care if he's got a limp or is fat or skinny as a rail. Just send a man to me so that I can stop being fed by my worrying mom. Jesus, your mother was so kind and understanding.

It didn't help matters much that on her way inside Saint Paul's Cathedral Annelisse overheard
