    Calum’s Loss

Calum saw the French dragoons just as he was about to walk around the bend in the trail right where the troopers were resting. He would’ve walked right into them in his hurry to catch up and rescue Catahecassa, had a voice in his head not told him to stop. A sixth sense? Some guardian angel he hadn’t known about? He asked himself the questions, but already knew the answer, even though he denied it.

    Catahecassa had warned him.

He stepped off the trail and into the trees. It wasn’t possible. A man couldn’t talk to another through thought. He was making something of it that wasn’t there. He’d seen the French and it hadn’t registered, or he’d heard them and his mind had done the rest. Yes, that had to be it. No, it wasn’t. It was Catahecassa. He let it go before it drove him crazy.

At least he’d found his friend. Now all he had to do was get him out of the hands of two hundred French dragoons. And despite what he’d said to Magdalene, dragoons weren’t just soldiers, they were the elite, chosen for their fighting skill and courage. Getting Catahecassa away from them wasn’t going to be easy. But if it was easy, it wouldn’t be any fun.

He made his way slowly through the trees, alert for any hidden sentry, while he ran every plan he could think of, all in vain. Every one ended with him dead.

He stopped at the treeline and looked down the long slope to the river. The dragoons were lying on the riverbank, sleeping or trying to before they rode out again in search of the English army. And there was Catahecassa sitting at a small table and talking to a general as if he’d been invited to tea.

Calum smiled. It was a strange sight even to him, and he’d seen sights that would’ve stopped a tavern wench gossiping. He could have just strolled into the camp, as if he belonged there. They’d likely not think him English from his clothes, but they’d just kill him anyway, as Magdalene had said. And she’d said a lot. But most of it made perfect sense, though he’d not mention that to her.

He leaned on a tree and watched the troopers fidgeting and restless, as any army is before a battle. And Catahecassa and his new friend the general. He didn’t have to guess what the general was trying to find out, nor did he have to guess what Catahecassa was telling him. It wouldn’t be long before the Frenchman’s patience was exhausted and the beatings began.

Then the general stood, extended his hand, and Catahecassa shook it. It stunned Calum and he blinked hard in case his eyes were playing tricks. For all the world it looked like the Indian was agreeing to do something for the Frenchman. He had to suppress a chuckle. Of course he was. He was agreeing to lead
