About this ebook
** This 10,000 word short story was originally published in the ALL OUR LOVE Romance Anthology by Novel Grounds **
Raven Sawyer was anything but stupid.
When she found out the man she dumped for being a prick was part of the mob, she heeded the police’s warning to lay low. She’d gotten a rental car and drove, with no direction where she was going except away.
She was managing fine, until her car broke down. Alone on a deserted dirt road, she began to walk, only to get almost hit by a truck.
…And Jackson was a mighty fine truck.
Sometimes, all a city girl needed was a southern man, a small town, and an escape from a dangerous criminal to find happiness.
Note: this is a stand alone, companion short story in the Distracted series. As an optional read, it takes place between Global Distraction (book 2) and Southern Distraction (book 3, coming soon). No prior reading is necessary.

Chapter One
:break.jpg"Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me! Raven exclaimed, hitting the steering wheel as her car sputtered to a stop on the ruddy dirt road.
Reliable, the guy said. Gas efficient, he said. Bullocks."
Not knowing what else to do, she shut off the engine on the now-worthless rental vehicle. Go figure, Murphy’s Law – if something bad could happen, it would, and did, to her.
Well...wasn’t this a wonderful idea, Rave? You’re now stuck in the middle of backwards nowhere, alone. Oh, and look at that, you have no signal either, so you can’t call triple A,
she argued to herself, holding her cell phone toward the roof and ignoring the fact that she probably looked insane from the outside. Not like anyone would see her anyway. She’d been driving for hours on that stupid road and she hadn’t seen a single car or truck. Come to think of it, she hadn’t seen any sign of human life... she did see a cow, though, so that had to amount for something.
Folding her arms over the top of the steering wheel, she put her head down, debating what few options she had left. She could call her mom – no, wait, she couldn’t. Raven refused to listen to her mom and her ‘I told you so’s’ about traveling alone, and to places she’d never been. Anything would be better than that. She could always take a nap in the car... but then again, it was nine o’clock in the morning. She’d gotten up at six after spending the night in a tiny motel, so she wasn’t tired. Unfortunately, that motel, and town, was more than three hours away in the opposite direction; heading back was definitely not a good choice. Sighing, she knew she only had one other option open to her; she was going to have to walk.
Joy,
she muttered as she snatched the keys from the dash and climbed out. Frustrated, she slammed the car door much harder than was necessary. It felt good for a moment, until she realized she’d left her purse in the passenger seat. Ruining the gumption she’d felt a moment before, she sheepishly opened the door, leaned over, and grabbed her purse. For the first time today, she was grateful no one had been around to witness her little show.
