This book is just what you need to bring the scriptures to life for you. Read the free sample and enjoy the difference Scripture in First Person, ALIVE and Off the Page can make for you.

***** The underlying point behind this book is the idea that bringing the Scriptures to life will help you develop the habit of reading your Bible every day. When you enjoy the closeness to God that continuous daily reading and reflecting on His Word creates, you will just naturally want to continue.
Which brings us to...

...getting closer to God and getting to know Him better. This drawing nearer to God causes Him to draw nearer to you. As you draw closer to Him and He draws closer to you, you will get to know Him better. Getting to know Him better will cause you to want to draw closer still to Him, which will cause Him to draw nearer to you, etc., etc.

This book presents a great concept at a great time. We all can use a little more time spent with our Lord.

This book is being used as a daily devotional, and as a weekly Ladies Group study guide. Scripture in first person is a great way to memorize verses. The verses just seem to ‘stick’ better when they are personal. We are looking forward to hearing more stories about how these verses are being used and the difference they’re making.

I have been a Christian for over twenty years. We, my husband and I, have raised two daughters and a son. I have been with my husband for over thirty years. I grew up in Providence, RI, where we also raised our children. We attended a small church for many years. We loved our church family so much; it was our example of heaven on earth and we would always be looking for another one! But, as you know time moves on, people move on. Our pastor, his wife, and family moved away and it was never the same again. But what we learned from that small church family would always be with us and in our hearts forever. We decided to move to the Yucatan. We chose the adventurous route and drove there. My husband, our dog, and me!It was here where God put it on my heart to write a book! Me! A writer! I never would have believed you if you told me a year ago that I was going to write a book! But I did, and it came out great because it was God who inspired me to do it in the first place! I don’t want to sound crazy, but that’s how it happened! It started with the idea of reading His word in first person and grew from there! I’m so excited!By praying and reading my Bible in first person over a period of time, I can see and feel myself loving and trusting God more every day. I can see and feel that I am changing into the person God wants me to be. As for the person I used to be, trusting and loving God was hard. I have been through my share of dark times, with doubt, separation from God, and many kinds of fears but, God has had hold on me the whole time. In those times it was me who turned away, not Him, He was there just waiting! This concept of the first person perspective allows me to talk to Him and get to know Him in a much more personal way.My hope is that you read His word in the first person perspective, and adopt this way of reading and praying to Him. My prayer is that you too can see the light go on in your spiritual life and by using this first person method of reading His word get closer to Him. If I just help one person through this book, then all the work I have put in will have been worth it! I hope that God uses me to be a light for you.

Scripture in First Person, ALIVE and Off the Page - Lorie Forrest

    Introduction

When I first started reading the Bible years ago, I had distant feeling about God as He related to me in my life. The words of the Bible were not *to me*- they were about other people.

For a long time, He was for others and not for me. My Bible reading was sporadic and sometimes I didn't want to read it at all.

One day my husband saw that I was not taking the Bible seriously and he recommended that I change the words to be in first person.

Well I was reluctant to change God's words and dragged my feet at first, not wanting to offend God by presuming to alter His Bible; but when we changed the passage in Colossians 1:9-13 to first person, and we read it over and over, a light went on in my head!

I was able to relate to God in a way I never had before! He was actually listening to me! I was actually talking to him!

I started changing each we' and His to I' and Your. I found that it didn't take anything away from the Bible; this practice actually added to it by making it personal, between Him and me.

I realized that there are many translations of the Bible out there, but nothing like this.

I hope that the words in these verses change how you can relate to God as well. If this way of reading helps just one person, I have done what God wants me to do.

I hope to show you that you too, can take His words and read them back to Him on your own, so you can have a closer relationship with Him as I do now.

For each Scripture verse in this book, I changed the perspective to first person, followed by the original verse from the NKJ version. I organized the verses under quick reference headings for you to use when you need a more focused verse.

These are just a sampling. If your favorite verses are not included here, please try them in first person.

I also added a few hymns that are close to my heart; but not wanting to make this into a song book, I restrained myself to only these… for now!

    Author’s note

The phrases in this book that are in (parentheses) are my own words from my heart. They are not my interpretations of the verse.

You may want to take notes, write in your journal, or in some other way interact with your readings and reflections as you go through this book.

At some point you will begin to feel like you are talking directly to God, and that He is talking directly to you.

This will generate ideas, thoughts, and insights that you are likely to want to revisit.

Some of these verses may cause you to challenge some of your current ideas and beliefs about yourself, your God, and your relationship to Him.

I urge you to take notes in some way. I have put together a devotional note sheet with some general questions that helps me when I go through my verses. Download it free here.

…and maybe have your Bible open next to you while you are reading this book and reflecting on the new thoughts it generates.

Here’s Where This All Started For Me

This is the first verse that I changed the reference point to first person, and it just popped.

Now when I pray these words in first person, I feel like I’m praying to Him about issues that really affect my life right now, and I continue to read these prayers and verses because they empower me and give me confidence.

My hope is that you, when you read your Bible, would turn your favorite verses into first person and see how doing this makes them come ALIVE and Off The Page and into your heart!

    Colossians 1:9-13

Dear Lord, fill me with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. Help me to walk worthy of You, Lord, fully pleasing to You, and make me fruitful in every good work, continually increasing in the knowledge of You, Lord.

Strengthen me with all might according to Your glorious power, for all patience and long-suffering with joy. I give thanks to You, Lord, who has qualified me to be a partaker of the inheritance of Your saints in the light.

Thank You, Lord, for delivering me from the power of darkness and conveying me into the kingdom of the Son of Your love. Amen!

    Colossians 1:9-13

    For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

    that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and long-suffering with joy;

giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.

This passage really hits my heart, because in it He tells me (the way I read it) that I am a special treasure to Him. It means so much to me that He says that about me, His creation!

How do you feel being God’s special treasure?

    Deuteronomy 7:6 -9

I am holy to You, my King! You have chosen me to be Yours; I am a special treasure to You. You have set Your love on me!

I know that You, God, are my God, faithful and true. You keep Your promises for a thousand generations to those (including me) who love You and keep Your commandments.

(I thank You, Lord, for loving me before I was even born!)

    Deuteronomy 7:6-9

For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure, above all the peoples on the face of the earth.
