About this ebook

A cure for HIV gone terribly wrong leading to a zombie outbreak. It is the year 2040 and countries have moved underground for safety.
Safety was supposedly the least of everyone's worries after the relocation. However, all of that changed in a flash when contaminated vaccines were circulated, triggering a new outbreak from within the country.
Follow the journey of Ryan, an average teenager who was injected with the tainted vaccine as he tells his story. He is neither zombie nor human, but a mutation of the virus itself - a sentient zombie.
With the support of his loyal friend and science whiz, Samuel, they embark on a dangerous journey to unravel the conspiracies of the deranged dictator behind the "accident" and fight for their lives - and the lives of everyone else.

Zombie by Fate, Hero by Choice - Ryan Teo

    PROLOGUE

It all began with a simple goal for the good of all humanity a cure for HIV. Despite good intentions, no one predicted that it would be the cause of one of the greatest apocalyptic events of our — time a zombie outbreak.

It is the year 2040. After a decade of relatively successful animal trials, scientists finally decided to conduct live testing of the cure. Using Africa as a starting point, they selected five volunteers and injected them with the cure in a secure medical facility. In a matter of days, the patients showed exponential signs of recovery and by the end of the week, they were certified cured from HIV. As a medical precaution, they were kept under close observation for a month before being released. It was a breakthrough for humanity.

News of their success started spreading like wild fire. By the end of the month, the cure was made commercially available to everyone. However, no one was prepared for what was coming.

Approximately two months after the first five were injected, they started displaying aggressive behaviour and adopted cannibalism. Medical experts were immediately alerted. Officials tried to apprehend the individuals but were unable to do so as they displayed inhumane strength, fatally injuring them in the process. What happened next shocked everyone. They bashed the skulls of the dead men in and began feasting on their brains. Only then was the military given authority to take control of the situation with lethal force.

Despite immediate recalls for the cure being made, there were already hundreds of thousands of individuals who were already injected. Attempts to quarantine them failed as it was near impossible to track down every single individual with the ease of air travel. To make matters worse, a healthy person could become infected if he/she were wounded by anyone infected. This led to the start of the global outbreak.

    PRESENT DAY

It has been a year since the outbreak. Most of the remaining population now live in underground domes under the close protection of their respective governments. The whole basis of underground cities was due to security. Controlling a small number of entry points, which also served as choke points for zombies, into the city from the surface was much more manageable than guarding the entire city perimeter on the surface.

Despite living underground, food and water was not a problem. Fresh water was obtained by filtering sea water while food was grown in underground farms. Meat became a luxury so most people resorted to vegetarian style mock meat while electricity came courtesy of nuclear power. Apart from these minor lifestyle changes, one could say life was pretty much the same, save for the constant fear of zombie attacks.

Medical science has also advanced — we were now able to classify the severity of infections as well as provide vaccines and cures. The virus has four distinct stages, one to four. Anyone in stage four is a lost cause. For those in stages one to three, cures are available, but their effectiveness and success rates depend highly on the individual and stage of infection. Portable iris scanners which are able to detect infection were also made available to everyone. Their shape was similar to that of a thermal gun.

Guns were also now legal, provided you had a permit — which was relatively easy to get anyway, as long as you didn’t have any criminal record. Anyone above the age of ten was allowed to obtain a pistol. Larger weapons such as SMGs or assault rifles require the wielder to be at least eighteen years of age. They were our main form of self-defence, whereby if anyone encountered a zombie, they were allowed to use lethal force.

    THIS IS MY STORY,

of how a routine vaccination changed my life completely.

I’m just an ordinary bespectacled guy, 1.75 metres tall and twenty years of age. As I was born premature, this made me slightly different from the normal person. On the outside I was just your average Joe but on the inside, god knows what the heck is going on in my head. Despite being weighed down by dyscalculia, I somehow formed a natural affinity with computers and tech gadgets and would further specialise in computer engineering. As such, never in my wildest dreams did I expect my life to take a drastic change as a result of a simple, routine event.

I was patiently waiting in line for my turn at the clinic. Vaccinations had to be done once every two months; despite no definitive proof that it would grant immunity against the virus. The whole procedure was very routine for me, as for everyone else. I went in, got my jab and promptly left for home.

The next morning, as I woke up, I had a strange craving for human flesh, blood and brains. This baffled me. How was it possible for me to crave something that I have never tried before? The craving was similar to the natural human desire for air — intense and insatiable. I thought it was merely a side effect of me being drowsy so I brushed the thought away and began freshening up. Unfortunately, the craving continued to linger.

Being the paranoid person I was, I immediately went to seek medical treatment. The doctor scanned me with an iris scanner which reported no infection at all. As a precaution, he scheduled me for urine, blood and saliva tests. All tests turned out negative with not the slightest hint of infection. The doctor assured me that it was merely all in my head as a craving for brains would only appear in a late stage three to four infection, which would have been detected by the iris scanner, let alone the rest of the tests. He suggested that perhaps it was just a placebo effect since I had my vaccination yesterday and that I should get more rest.

Believing him, I went home to rest for the day. Besides, I had school the next day and I wouldn’t want to turn up all tired and worn out.

THE NEXT MORNING, I still had the same weird craving for brains. I whipped out my own iris scanner and scanned myself. As expected, it came out negative. I told myself that I needed to calm down and that perhaps it was just my anxiety taking over. I went to the toilet to get myself freshened up and that’s when I realised something felt different but I could not pin-point what it was. Brushing it aside, I got changed, grabbed my bag and pistol and left for school.

Only at that point did it hit me — I was able to see perfectly without my glasses. I was somewhat shocked but yet pleasantly surprised by this. At least something good came out of the supposed infection.

When I arrived at school, I headed down to basement eight where I agreed to meet my friend, Samuel, to discuss about my issue. He and I go way back — we’ve known each other for six years and I could always count on him. He too was twenty years old, about 1.75 metres in height and bespectacled. He had the typical nerd look which caused him to be frequently bullied, though that did not stop me from reaching out to be his friend. Plus, he was a science whiz, so perhaps he might have some clue as to what’s going on. He was already seated on the bench when I reached the floor.

Hey Sam! I shouted from across the floor.

As I walked towards the bench, I could not help but think how delicious he smelled.

So, do you have any clue as to what might be wrong with me?

Before we get to that, you’ve finally switched to contacts?

Not exactly… my voice trailed off.

Let me guess. Genetic mutation as a result of the botched vaccine gave you perfect eyesight. Anyway back to the topic at hand. I don’t really have a good idea of what’s happening, but a unique genetic mutation of the virus fusing with you is the only thing I can think of at the moment, but let me scan you just to be sure.

As he stretched out his hand to scan me, an unforeseen frenzy overcame me and I immediately pushed him back for his safety, accidentally pushing off the bench in the process.

Sorry. I don’t know what came over me but I had a sudden compulsion to just rip you apart and eat you. You could scan me, but try not to hold your hand so close to me.

    Okay, sure!

This time he scanned me from a much larger distance. The scanner indicated no infection. This left him
