Nicola R. White

Nicola R. White is no stranger to the fantastic. Although there are no Furies in her family tree (that she knows of), she comes from a small city on the east coast of Canada where ghost stories and superstitions abound. She has worked on movie sets, as a bartender, in a lighthouse, and as a lawyer, and though she’s never been an exotic dancer like her character, Alex Hughes, she does know how to pole dance. She has always been fascinated by the strange and morbid, and often stays up too late reading books that give her nightmares. She believes truth is stranger than fiction, and just a few of her heroes are Buffy, Dana Scully, and Xena. Nicola is a member of Romance Writers of America and Romance Writers of Atlantic Canada, and is an active member and supporter of the award-winning Romance Divas website and online forum.

    Chapter 1

Captain Thalia James, deserter and fugitive, looked out at the way station on screen before her and argued with her ship. We have no choice, we have to put in to port. You’re falling apart.

They’ll court martial you, the destroyer warned.

What do you know? You’re a floating heap of scrap metal. You won’t make it to the next system without repairs.

The Excelsior’s avatar joined her on the bridge and strapped himself into the seat next to her with a grin. That’s not what you said last night.

Thalia sighed. Any other time, his reminder of their lovemaking would have her ready for another round. But now it was just a reminder of the danger they faced.

Dex. She reached for his hand, felt the warmth that would pass for human if she didn’t know better. We have no choice.

He gripped her hand tighter, shook his head. It’s too big a risk. I can make it to the Badlands, I’m sure of it.

    You’re lying.

It was another reminder of what he was. Was there any other machine in the ‘verse that would lie to spare her feelings? Who could lie to spare her feelings?

His avatar turned black eyes on her, full of emotion he shouldn’t have been able to feel. You know the penalty for desertion.

Thalia swallowed hard, but she reached out to punch in the override sequence. The override she’d promised Dex she’d never use. She knew the penalty for desertion, feared death as much as anyone—but there was no alternative. Dex’s internal relay system was decaying faster than he could repair it. If they didn’t get the parts he needed before the system broke down completely, he would…

Her hand tightened on the ship’s throttle. Well, she didn’t know what would happen to Dex, did she? There had never been another ship like Dex.

She stared at the view screen and bit her lip. There was no choice. They had to dock at Monarch IV.

Hell, maybe we’re worrying for nothing, Dex suggested, trying to make her feel better. "Maybe no one will even recognize us
