About this ebook
Subtraction and Long Division:
Think back to your early school years - wasn't subtraction harder than adding? And wasn't long division the most difficult of all? After reading this book you may find your ability to mentally subtract has increased enormously. You will calculate faster. Also you will discover a way to do long division without needing to know any of the "terrible times tables" at all, a way so simple you can successfully teach it to a five year old.
The book is written in an easy to read manner for parents, children and teachers.
Robert Michael Taylor
Robert has an MSc in maths and has worked closely with his father Dr SW Taylor who produced a new system of approaching arithmetic which brings in a philosophical dimension not normally encountered in that "dry" subject. The result is a system of arithmetic which conveys a high ability to calculate, something missing in today's curriculum, and a deep understanding not only of mathematics but also of philosophy.

Visual Circlemaths Book 1 a Parent Teacher Guide to Speed Subtraction and Long Division - Robert Michael Taylor
Mastering Subtraction
Multiplication is repeated addition.
For example 3 x 4 = 12 means we start from 0 and reach 12 in 3 steps of 4:
4 + 4 + 4 = 12 (three fours
are twelve)
Likewise division is just repeated subtraction. So 12/4 = 3 means we start from 12 and go backwards in ‘size-4-boots’ to reach 0. The answer is that it takes 3 steps:
12 – 4 – 4 – 4 = 0 (12 ‘less four’ 3 times reaches 0)
If you master subtraction then division will fall into place of its own accord.
The Standard (Slow) Way to Subtract
9 from 7 won’t go
So add a 1 in front of the 7
Make it 17
And ask:
9 and what makes 17?
Don’t ask me!
Ok.. I’ll count it out…
Oh… 9 and 1 makes 10, and 2 makes 11, and 3 makes 12 etc. ... it’s 8!
GOOD!
Now make the 3 a 2
What???! Why? I was taught a different way!
(There are two alternative ways)
Just do it!
Oh... all right then...
Now 0 from 2 is 2!
Easy eh?
UGH! All those carries!
Borrowing 10’s and paying them back! It's good to understand what it's about but for an actual practical ability to subtract quickly it desperately needs streamlining!
