    Dog Care - Michael Kenssington

    Introduction

Before your dog can be the lifelong companion you have always dreamed he would be, it is important to prepare both yourself and him for a life of health and well-being.

It is important to understand that caring for your dog is not a one-step or one-day process. Caring for your dog is a lifelong commitment and an investment in time, money, energy, patience, and love. The time and effort you invest in properly caring for your dog will reward you both with a strong, loving, lifetime relationship… and that is priceless!

This book focuses on the basics of dog care and includes easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions for keeping your dog both healthy and safe.

As you begin to care for your dog begin with the end in mind. Imagine how proud you will feel as your dog grows into the healthy, happy, well-behaved, disciplined dog you have always dreamed of.

    Dog Health

Are You Delaying or Avoiding Regular Health Appointments for the Family Dog?

I recently stood at the arrival door at a major airport waiting eagerly for my mother-in-law. My favorite conversation I overheard came from a young hipster couple from Los Angeles returning from Des Moines, Iowa. They talked about their young growing son.

I wonder if he slept well while we were gone.

Did he miss us while we were gone?

I wonder if Susan remembered to order takeout three times a week for him.

I wonder if he had a chance to go for a walk in the park.

Then a well-dressed private chauffeur stepped forward to greet the couple carrying their son a Royal Chow. The Royal Chow looked very happy to see his parents. I remembered as a child that old couples in the neighborhood would have dogs as pets that ate their dinner at the dining room table like a member of the family.

The dog parents that were just mentioned were obviously quite concerned about their son’s well-being during their absence. The trend appears, however, that pet parents don't realize they need to pay attention to a dog's health as the climate and seasons change. In my area, for example, The Grinch is waiting for the drifts of snow to pile up on our street. It's time for my annual check-up and talk to my doctor to make certain I am in good health.

The family dog needs regularly scheduled health appointments with the vet.

I hope that hipster couple with their Royal Chow and all their canine brothers-in-arms throughout the country get at least an annual check-up for their dogs.

Dog owners don't realize that a dog ages 7 years for every year that a human ages one year. I knew an owner whose dog lived 17 years. She realized that a yearly check-up was seven times more important to a dog similar to an owner waiting 7 years to get an annual checkup. That dog even got acupuncture and sushi in its old age.

Dog owners may delay taking their dog to the vet until the dog is sick. Don't wait until the dog stops eating or drinking to take him or her to the vet. Don't wait for the dog to exhibit strange behavior. Take the dog at least twice a year to the vet's office and maybe the dog will live 17 years or 119 years for you and me.

You can also practice preventive care to help the dog while he is still young. Dogs can suffer from worms, parasites, kidney stones, liver problems, ear ailments and arthritis.

Going to the vet's office is similar to going through the drive-thru at rush hour and eating your meal in the parking lot. It is a fast process and moderately priced.

The vet has a wide variety of medical instruments at his disposal. He will use the stethoscope to check the heart, the otoscope for the ears, and the ophthalmoscope for the eyes. The vet will examine your dog’s gums and teeth. The vet will check your dog's coat, weight, pulse, and temperature.

Guess what? Dogs love to go to the vet. The vet sometimes gives them treats. They learn to look forward to their visits. Remember to take the dog to the same vet. The familiarity will make the examination go smoother
