    Chapter One

Layla draped her leg over Samael’s, enjoying the fierceness of his muscles beneath the soft flesh of her inner thigh. With the arch of her foot, she caressed his calf. The glint in his half-closed eyes and mesmerizing upward tilt of one corner of his mouth told her he knew what she was up to, and he approved.

How fortunate they were still abed, nestled in the incredible luxury of his fae-woven silken sheets.

A flash of color drew her attention, and she tilted her head to glance through the enormous picture window of Samael’s undersea chamber. A school of clownfish streaked by, and the unexpected sight tugged her lips into a smile. She had never been a seafaring woman, much preferring open skies and dry land, but down here with the Guardian of the Deep, she basked in a warm cocoon of pampered luxury.

A rarity for her these days.

Enough distraction, sweetness. Samael’s voice sounded husky against her ear. He reached behind her and pressed a button that drew together the draperies, occluding the vibrant ocean view lit by phosphorescent seafae. His tongue swirled inside the dainty gold hoop that adorned her earlobe.

    A tremor fluttered through her.

I want you focused on me, not my playful charges.

That she could still see the underwater creatures through the skylight made her smile. Samael had not shuttered the overhead vista.

His warm, powerful arms wrapped around her, causing her to relinquish all thought except for the wonder of his body against hers. He drew her close, and she arched her back as the hard planes of his chest pressed against her soft mounds. When he tendered a series of moist kisses against her ear, she concluded Samael had no reservations and desired her as much as she wanted him.

Not to mention the telltale sign of the renewed bulge in his crotch, covered only by the soft, opaque cotton of his lounge trousers. Sam was always up for more. A perfect lover for an insatiable Succubus like her. Just desserts, considering her calling.

These days she desired only Samael. The hypnotic Guardian of the Deep kept her wanting more. Only her job prevented her from seeking his bed each evening. Recently, her duties as a Succubus left a sour taste in her mouth.

What befalls a man when you’re done with him is not your concern, the demoness Lilith, her patron Goddess, had long ago warned. She remembered Lilith’s voice, sultry and compelling, stroking away her youthful reservations, its ancient power soothing her with dark comfort. We Lillans feed from the astral energy of the human male. It has been that way since my father cast me out and named me demoness. Would you have your people starve? Would you shrivel and die and allow a man to prevail? Never be a bleeding heart, Layla.

Gratitude flooded Layla that Samael, as an arcane Guardian, stood immune to the deadly aspects of her Succubus powers. Not human, thank Goddess. Her fierce demoness needs could not render him infatuated and feeble without her.

His lips at her throat sent flames cascading down her body, and she gasped, clutching at his broad shoulders.

Coming from two different worlds, their continuing attraction still amazed her. From the moment her eyes met his, Samael’s raw masculinity had liquefied her. I want you in my bed, were not his first words, but they may as well have been. She had expected the night to blaze with passion and then be done. She had never thought she would return again and again through the dim connecting tunnels to Samael’s splendorous undersea chamber.

The Guardian of the Deep charmed her heart and stirred her blood. She wanted to make the most of tonight’s opportunities.

It wasn’t just the way her body melted against his, and around his extraordinary male anatomy. As she gazed into his eyes, her stomach somersaulted in vulnerability and tenderness. One part of her suspected—hoped—he reciprocated her attachment.

The other part of her knew the danger of love.

Guardians such as Samael were known for reckless womanizing, but their customs did not outlaw exclusive relationships. To her mother organization, the Lillans, falling in love equaled treachery and evoked Lilith’s wrath.

    Monogamy was not Lilith’s
