Introduction

––––––––

Affirmations can be powerful, life-changing tools, but they are often confusing and frustrating to use. Like many other people, you may have wondered exactly how you're supposed to word an affirmation, how often you should say it, how quickly it will start to work for you, what you should do if it doesn't work, and so on.

I've stumbled across a lot of misleading and incorrect information about affirmations, and my goal with this book is to offer a much more user-friendly, intuitive approach to using affirmations that will help you avoid wasting time with ineffective techniques.

In fact, my discovery of most of the techniques in this book was purely through trial and error as I learned to use affirmations for myself.

I have always loved to experiment with various spiritual and personal development techniques, and affirmations were no different. I have tried using them in endless ways, including using pre-written, free affirmations you can find online, and coming up with my own unique methods for writing affirmations.

After practicing these methods for a while, my results would lead me to either tweak the technique some more or discard it altogether if it just wasn't working the way I wanted it to.

Finally I started to understand exactly how and why affirmations work, why they often don't work at all, and what to do to make them much more targeted and effective.

Still, I encourage you to perform your own experiments as you work through the material in this book. The techniques I'll be sharing with you have worked beautifully for me, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will be a perfect fit for you.

Don't worry; I will be explaining how you can tell if an affirmation will work for you, and what to do about it if you find that it won't.

That's the wonderful thing about affirmations; if something doesn't resonate with you, you are completely free to adjust it, tweak it, mold it, stretch it, or just get rid of it!

There are really no 'carved in stone' rules for using affirmations. That may surprise you, because you may have heard that affirmations should always be said in a certain way, or used in a certain way.

I have found that those so-called 'rules' don't necessarily apply in every situation. I'll be sharing with you the reasons why I feel that way, and I'll offer plenty of examples and tips for making sure that any affirmations you decide to use will be a perfect fit for you.

As we go along, I encourage you to keep one key thing in mind: You are not trying to change anything outside of yourself with affirmations.

Yes, I know that that is your ultimate goal, to improve your life with the use of affirmations. Perhaps you want to lose weight, get in shape, make more money, meet the love of your life, or any number of other wonderful goals. That's great!

But the first place you need to focus is inside yourself. Not outside.

With your use of affirmations, your first and most important goal is to change yourself on the inside. Once you are successful with that, the outer stuff will start changing much more easily.

That's really important to understand, so please don't skim over this part.

A lot of people recite affirmations like they are magical incantations that can instantly call forth different circumstances, but it just doesn't work like that.

Saying, I have a million dollars is not going to make a million dollars magically appear on your doorstep.

Affirmations can't magically shift your outer circumstances, but they can shift your thoughts, feelings and beliefs so that you start attracting more of the wonderful things you want into your life.

I'll be going in to a lot more detail about the real purpose of affirmations, but for now I just want to mention that your overriding focus should be to change yourself with affirmations, not the outer stuff.

But don't worry; that doesn't mean the outer stuff isn't going to change. Oh yes, it will change all right! But it has to start from within you, not outside of you.

Every chapter in this book is going to contain detailed tips and information about how to write affirmations, how to use them, how to tell if they will work for you, various uses for affirmations, how to switch them up, why you should, and so much more!

I will be including plenty of detailed examples so you can see exactly how I break down the affirmations, and I'll also be encouraging you to create your own personalized affirmations. And it's all going to be easier and so much more fun than you probably believed possible.

Chapter 1

The Power of Your Thoughts

––––––––

If I were to ask you to explain the purpose of affirmations, what would you say? Most people would answer that affirmations are supposed to change your outer circumstances.

If you wanted to lose weight, you might use an affirmation to motivate you to exercise more and eat healthier. If you wanted to increase your income, you might use an affirmation to receive better job opportunities or a promotion.

However, even though your ultimate goal is to change your outer circumstances, there is a much more important, deeper goal here too. And that is to change your thoughts, your feelings and your beliefs.

In the introduction, I mentioned that affirmations are not meant to change anything outside of you; at least not at first. The initial goal with affirmations is to change your thoughts, feelings and beliefs on the inside.

Why is that?

Everything in your life is built upon the foundation of your inner state of being, and is then reflected onto your outer circumstances.

For example, a person who feels powerless and defeated will constantly think thoughts about being victimized. They will feel like a victim in most of their interactions with other people, and they will then attract more experiences that make them feel victimized and defeated.

However, if they were to start changing their thoughts with the use of affirmations, they would start to feel empowered and strong, and they would then attract different experiences with the people in their lives, and their outer conditions would start to change for the better.

The affirmation didn't really change the conditions; it changed the person. And when the person changed, so did the conditions.

––––––––

Why Your Thoughts Are So Powerful

––––––––

Have you ever noticed that your thoughts have a direct, clear impact on your life experiences? You can't focus on something for very long before you start seeing evidence of that thing showing up in your outer life.

A great example is when you start thinking about buying a new car. You feel drawn to a particular make and model car, and you spend some time focusing on how much you like it, the color you like the best, which features you would like it to have...and before long, you start seeing those exact cars everywhere!

The cars were already there, but you didn't notice them until you started focusing on that specific type of car. Once you focused on it for long enough, your mind became more aware of those particular cars, and you therefore started seeing more of them.

The same thing happens with anything you focus on; positive or negative. Struggle or ease; wealth or scarcity; good health or bad health; love or fear; peace or turmoil; success or failure. Wherever your focus is the majority of the time, that's what you're going to see reflected in your outer world.

The good news is that you can use the power of affirmations to focus on something you want, and it will start showing up in your outer world.

But it's not magic. It's simply because you used the power of your mind to 'tune in' to it, and therefore you started seeing more and more of it, and even experiencing it yourself.

––––––––

The Purpose of Affirmations

––––––––

The purpose of affirmations is really to start shifting your thoughts, feelings, beliefs and actions toward the things you want (as opposed to the things you don't want). Before you can change anything outside of yourself, the inner changes have to happen first. Affirmations can help you do that.

However, sometimes affirmations don't seem to work very well. Why is that? There are plenty of possible reasons, but some of the most common reasons are:

––––––––

1) Using affirmations that don't resonate with you.

2) Using affirmations that are too strongly worded.

3) Not using affirmations often enough.

4) Not using them in the most effective ways.

5) Giving up on the affirmations too
