1 Vom RDBMS zur Datenplattform
Der Microsoft SQL Server hat über die letzten Jahre und Versionen eine spannende Entwicklung gemacht und nun, da mit dem SQL Server 2014 am 1. April dieses Jahres eine neue Version erschienen ist, liefert dieses Kapitel nicht nur einen kleinen Rückblick, sondern stellt sich auch die Frage, welche Neuerungen und Schwerpunkte das neue Produkt mit sich bringt.
Der Microsoft SQL Server stand viele Jahre für Enterprise-Applikationen im Schatten von Oracle. Diese Zeiten sind allerdings schon lange vorbei, weil insbesondere die Versionen 2000, 2005 und 2008 fehlende Funktionalität nachlieferten und den SQL Server damit zu einem echten Enterprise RDBMS machten. Zusätzlich lieferte das Produkt mit Reporting Services (SSRS), Integration Services (SSIS) und Analysis Services (SSAS) aber auch bereits eine Business-Intelligence-(BI-)Plattform. So war der Server 2008 R2 eigentlich ein reines BI-Release und auch der SQL Server 2012 lieferte mit Features wie „AlwaysOn oder „ColumnStore Index
weiterhin spannende Neuerungen für Enterprise- und BI-Szenarien.
Wie unterscheidet sich nun das Release des SQL Servers 2014 von seinen Vorgängern? Nun, betrachten wir zunächst die Überschriften der drei Schwerpunktbereiche:

Dabei wird deutlich, dass neben den Themen Enterprise (Mission Critical) und BI (Faster Insights) nun auch die Cloud einen Schwerpunkt für dieses SQL-Server-Release bildet. Hatte man eine Zeit lang den Eindruck, Microsoft wolle uns überzeugen, künftig alles in die Cloud zu verlagern, so macht das Wort „Hybrid" deutlich, dass hier ein Umdenken stattgefunden hat. Für viele Kunden dürfte nämlich die Erweiterung einer bereits bestehenden On-Premise-Infrastruktur um gewisse Cloud-Komponenten das viel realistischere Szenario sein. Der SQL Server 2014 bietet hier viele interessante Möglichkeiten, sich eine Dateninfrastruktur aufzubauen, die das eigene Rechenzentrum und die Cloud umspannt. Was verbirgt sich konkret hinter den drei Headlines des SQL Servers 2014?
Mission Critical Performance
„In-Memory" ist ein aktuelles Thema im Enterprise-Umfeld, nicht zuletzt aufgrund der über die letzten Jahre rapide gesunkenen Preise für Speicher. Mit dem SQL Server 2014 liefert Microsoft nun ebenfalls eine Lösung für In-Memory OLTP. Im Gegensatz zu SAP HANA und Oracle liefert Microsoft diese neue Engine aber als festen Bestandteil des Produkts, sodass weder eine Appliance oder ein weiteres Produkt gekauft werden muss, noch eine weitere Speicherart als Duplikat neben die alte
