    One Direction

    The Basics

One Direction are the most successful boy band of the decade. Comprising of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne, they have taken the world by storm.

All five of the boys auditioned as solo performers for Britain’s The X Factor in 2010. None of them made it through to the ‘boys’ category, yet seeing their true potential, Simon Cowell put them together as a group and they progressed through the show.

Although they finished third in the grand final, 1D (as the band name is often written) have gone on to find a great deal more success than the acts that finished above them. Rebecca Ferguson was the show’s runner up and didn’t have much of an impact on the charts, and winner Matt Cardle had a few minor successes before being dropped by the Syco record label a couple of years later.

Four of the boys are British (Harry, Zayn, Liam and Louis) and one Irish (Niall), yet their success hasn’t just been limited to that part of the world! They have become one of the most successful overseas bands in the American Charts, are loved by fans across the whole of Europe, have a dedicated following in Asia and are practically worshipped as deities in Oceania!

At the time of writing, One Direction have released three studio albums, all of which have been tremendously successful. But fans aren’t just interested in hearing the music, they want to see the band live... and the boys haven’t disappointed! They have already been on three worldwide sell-out tours, and have already confirmed dates for another starting in 2015.

The band has been showered with awards from across the globe, from BRITs to MTV Music gongs. Billboard, the leading American music magazine declared One Direction as the Top New Artist of 2012 (admittedly they were a little behind the times!) and together the boys are said to be worth an extraordinary amount of money.

As with most famous bands, there are already tribute acts that tour the country and give fans who can’t see the real thing a small taste of what it would be like. Some are better than others musically, and a few are pretty good lookalikes, but of course none of them are quite as good as the real One Direction. Amusingly, one such tribute band are called Only One Direction but some fans have pointed out that as they look almost nothing like the actual band, they should perhaps instead be called Wrong Direction!

Despite the boys being some of the most instantly recognisable people on the planet, and the fact that with their riches they could live a life of complete and utter luxury and isolation, they say this wouldn’t be for them. In fact, Niall stresses just how important it is to remain grounded. He feels that it is very easy to lose your way if you start believing in your own hype, and he tries to do things he used to do before he got famous - such as going to see football matches, or attending other bands’ gigs.

Perhaps the biggest reason that One Direction are so successful is that they’re very much like a family. Everywhere they go the boys seem to get on well, and their natural personalities always shine through. Perhaps this feeling is best summed up by Zayn, who only has sisters at home; he once said that he had always wanted a brother, and now he was in the band he has four. Aww!

We’re pretty sure that because you’ve bought this book, you’ll know this fact, but just in case here it is - don’t worry, we won’t tell anyone you didn’t know! Fans of One Direction and called Directioners, and you really have to know your stuff to be a true Directioner. You’re going to have to pick a favourite (and be able to argue strongly your case for why they are the best) and you’ll have to learn all the lyrics to all of the songs. But with any luck, the facts in this book will give you an edge over other fans, because some of them are not very well known!

    Harry

Harry Edward Styles was born on the 1st of February 1994 in Worcestershire, England to proud mother Anne and father Desmond. His parents later divorced when he was seven years old and his mum later remarried.

Harry has one older sister, Gemma, who was born in 1990. The two are very close, so much so that he even has her named tattooed in Hebrew on his shoulder. In 2013 she graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a first class honours degree in Science Education. Gemma’s university took to Twitter writing ‘A special guest attended today’s graduation ceremony to see his sister collect her degree. Welcome @harry_styles.’ We’re not jealous in the slightest!

Despite regularly performing in front of millions of screaming fans, Harry has said one of the most nerve-racking things he has ever done was giving a speech at his mums wedding.

Before Harry became one fifth of the UK’s biggest boy band he worked at the W Mandeville Bakery in Holmes Chapel and was studying A-levels in Law, Sociology and Business in the hope of becoming a physiotherapist.

Harry is well-known for his curly locks but the heartthrob actually wanted to shave his hair off - but thankfully none of the band’s stylists would let him! His argument was that he thinks his popularity is in his face and not his hair... it’s a fair point, but it just wouldn’t be the same Harry without those luscious brown curls.

It’s no secret that the boys aren’t short of money so it was a bit of a shock to hear that when their debut album topped the number one spot Harry splashed out on a brand new... mattress! It’s safe to say now however that he has since learned how to splash the cash and has owned an Audi R8, a Range Rover, a Porsche Carrera... and a Ford Capri.

Oh, did we mention that at twenty years old he also owns a three million pound home in the hugely sought after area of Primrose Hill, London where his neighbours once included the once notorious ‘Primrose Hill set’ which consisted of Kate Moss, Sadie Frost, Pearl Lowe and Liam Gallagher. However, in more recent times it has quietened down and is now home to designer Henry Holland and model Daisy Lowe.

Despite his sometimes ‘extravagant’ spending Harry is very generous and caring. Not only does he eat both ends of a Twix evenly to ensure the other side doesn’t get lonely (!) he also agreed to lend Matt Healy from The 1975 £5000 - although it did turn out to be a popular ‘Call or Delete’ prank on friend Nick Grimshaw’s Radio One breakfast show!

Harry is known for being rather popular with the ladies. Let’s take Caroline Flack; Harry was just seventeen at the time and she was thirty-two - the fifteen year age gap caused widespread controversy. Then there’s the not-so-innocent Taylor Swift who reportedly wrote Trouble about him. However despite remaining quite tight-lipped about his private life he is worried that his ways will earn him a bad reputation - especially as he can’t even stand next to a girl without the media reporting that he has a new partner! One relationship we’re sure we all want to know more about however is that with the beautiful Kendall Jenner. It seemed to be over just as quickly as it had begun, yet who could be more perfect together then those two?! Reports say that the two remain friends so we can only hope that one day in the future they give things another go.
