- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Watson, the dog, is named early on. Sam [Samantha] the Siamese and Emmy [Esmeralda] are merely 'the cats' until chapter 20!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sherebury is in search of a new Bishop. Alan is on the search committee. One of the candidates turns up dead. Dorothy, of course, feels the need to investigate. This is approached by visiting the parishes of the remaining candidates and conducting informal interviews with them. They turn up some irregularities, bring others into the investigation, and eventually solve the crime. I was excited to see that Dams was returning the series to Sherebury although a great deal of the action takes place in other locations throughout England. I was disappointed in the mystery itself. This series has just not been the same since Alan retired from the police force. This is probably the last installment I will read even if the series continues. The last three installments have not been worth reading. It's time to move on.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The cathedral at Sherebury needs a new bishop and the candidate list is pared down to four. Alan Nesbitt, retired cop, and husband of Dorothy Martin, our heroine, is on the committee to interview the candidates and make a recommendation. But before the final interviews begin, one of the candidates is murdered. While dithering about what to do, the committee decides to send Alan and Dorothy out to conduct preliminary interviews with the remaining candidates, and do a little sleuthing in the community where the murdered candidate lived. Of course, this is just what Dorothy wants – to get back into amateur sleuthing. In the process, the duo finds three very different candidates -- and a dead man who appears to have been a horrible person and his church most unwelcoming. I have read the Dorothy Martin mysteries for years. They were never a favorite, or a must-read, but I enjoyed them. Day of Vengeance not so much. It seemed to drag, with lots of talk and very little action and waaaaaaay to many characters. It turned out to be a puzzle solved by a committee, with Dorothy’s intuition trumping. I found the resolution of the mystery totally unsatisfying -- the story seemed to taper off rather than end with any finality.
