About this ebook
In 1376, the famed Black Prince died of a terrible rotting sickness, closely followed by his father, King Edward III. The crown of England is left in the hands of a mere boy, the future Richard II, and the great nobles gather like hungry wolves around the empty throne. As a terrible power struggle threatens the country, one of London’s powerful merchant princes is foully murdered and Coroner Sir John Cranston and Dominican monk Brother Athelstan are ordered to investigate. When further deaths occur, they find themselves drawn ever deeper into a dark web of intrigue.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I generally list books under the pseudonym used in writing, but Mr. Doherty switched to his real name after the first book and I wanted to keep the series together.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/51376 A goldsmith named Sir Thomas Springall has been found in his bed, murdered. Sir John Cranston, coroner and his assistant Brother Athelstan are called in to investigate. But how and why was he killed. Then there is another death.
An enjoyable historical mystery - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Mediocre medieval murder mystery with characters that lack depth. One is attracted to the genre by the likes of Ellis Peters, sadly only to discover that most of it is like this. If you're looking for something to restore your faith, this isn't it.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Paul Harding manages to make the filth, smells, decay and disease very believable and real. It is a dark and dreary place where these people live and you can feel it. The mystery is good but nothing spectacular. The characters are flawed and gritty but, despite the surroundings and everything else, manage to not be so miserable that you don’t want to read about them. The relationship between the two main characters can even be fun at times and the characters themselves, likeable.
