This book is dedicated to my husband and children. I appreciate the sacrifices they made in order to allow me to follow God’s lead.

    Ch. 1

Cassandra James stepped out on the cabin’s deck and smiled at the sight in front of her. Her husband Luke and their four-year-old son Bryan were building a snow man, but it seemed Bryan was getting more snow on himself than the actual snow man.

Hey, boys, come grab some hot chocolate! she called.

They both turned her way and smiled before racing one another to the deck.

Mommy! Mommy! Do you see that giant snow man we builded? It’s at least a gazillion feet high!

My goodness! I bet it is! She met her husband’s gaze and they shared a smile.

Me and Daddy are ‘bout to play football, Mommy! Do you want to play?

Are you sure you want me to play? I mean, I’d hate for a girl to beat you guys.

Bryan turned to her with an overly-shocked expression. Girls can NEVER beat boys, Mommy! We’re the best! Aren’t we, Daddy?

Uh, kiddo, you might want to watch it. Luke then leaned over and whispered, Girls don’t like to admit that they’re losers.

‘Losers’?! I’ll show you boys ‘losers’! Give me that ball!

After about an hour of play, at the end of which Cassandra had the most points, she called a halt for the night.

But, Mommy! We were gonna beat you!

Oh, were you now? Well, I guess we’ll just have to have a rematch tomorrow to see if that’s true, Cassandra said as she ruffled her son’s hair.

Yes! Did you hear that, Daddy? A rematch! A rematch! Tomorrow’s gonna be great!

I did hear that, kiddo, but that means you need to go eat your dinner, get your bath and get plenty of rest so we’ll be ready for it, said Luke.

Ok! Let’s go! Let’s go! Can we read a story after dinner, Mommy?

I think we can handle that, Sweetie.

The three headed into their weekend cabin to share dinner. While Cassandra bathed Bryan, Luke got the fire blazing again and picked out a bedtime story. Bryan fell asleep halfway through the story so Luke carried him down the hallway to his bedroom. After tucking him into bed, Cassandra and Luke returned to the fireplace and cuddled up in front of it.

Cass, Sweetie, I have some news. I got a promotion at work today.

Congratulations, Baby! I’m so happy for you!

Well, you’re about to get happy for the both of us. After I was promoted, I started thinking about a way to celebrate and I think it’s time that we finally take that trip to Paris we’ve been talking about for a while. What do you think?

Oh, my gosh, Luke! Are you serious?

Yes! I’m totally serious! I already put in for two weeks off next month and I talked to Jessica today. She said she’d be more than happy to keep Bryan for us while we go.

You don’t think we should take him, too? I mean, he would love that.

So we’ll take him next time. This time is for the two of us. We haven’t been alone together since Bryan was born. I know you could use a break and we need some time away together. We can always go back later with him. What do you say?

Cassandra looked up into her husband’s excited expression and immediately gave in. I think that would be great, honey. Let’s do it!

And, you know, I was thinking that when we get back maybe we should try for Baby Number Two.

Really?! Oh, yes, please! I want another baby!

I think it’s about time Bryan has a little sister.

Yeah, but what if it’s another boy?

He got a wicked look in his eye. Well, I guess we’ll just have to try again and again until we get a girl.

Lucas James! Are you trying to form your own football team?

Yep! And while we’re at it, we’ll shoot for the band, the cheerleading squad and maybe even a basketball team, he said as he leaned over to kiss her.

    ********

The next day, Cassandra woke up to Bryan jumping on her bed. She sat up, grabbed Bryan mid-jump and started tickling him. Bryan laughed that adorable laugh and squirmed until he could move out of Cassandra’s grasp.

When he finally stopped laughing, he said, Mommy! Mommy! You gots to get up! Daddy’s tryin’ to cook again!

    Oh, no! What’s he cooking?

He said its pancakes and sausage, but the pancakes are black and smell yucky and there was some smoke!

Uh oh! Alright, let’s go save the day! Do you have my cape?

Yep, right here, Mommy! Bryan walked behind her and tied her invisible cape around her neck. Alright, Mommy, you’re ready!

    Okay, let’s go!

Hand-in-hand they walked down the hall to the kitchen. When they reached it, Cassandra had to clasp her hand over her mouth to stop the laugh that was trying to escape. Not only was Bryan right about the smoke but there was pancake mix all over the counter, the cabinets and Luke’s hair. It looked as though he had used every dish in the cabin to try to cook. There was also some type of red liquid dripping off of the counter onto the floor. When Luke turned around, Cassandra could see the pancake mix was also all over his face and could no longer hold in the laugh.

When Luke heard her, he looked up with a stricken look on his face. Oh, you think this is funny?

Cassandra hurriedly tried to hide her smile. No, Sweetheart, it’s not funny at all.

Between giggles, Bryan said, But, Mommy, you told me to never, never lie!

That did it! Cassandra could no longer hold it together. When she burst out laughing again, Luke said, I’ll show you funny! and ran after them. She and Bryan tried to run away but Luke caught up to Bryan and Cassandra had to go back to save her baby. As soon as she was in reach, Luke grabbed Cassandra and began rubbing his face and hair all over her face. Hah, now you’re dirty, too!

Ewww, Luke! Cassandra said between laughs. That’s disgusting!

The three laughed and fell to the floor together. For the next few minutes, they chased each other around and wrestled.

Mommy! I’m starving! There’s a hole in my belly that needs filled!

Alright, guys. I’ll start breakfast; you two clean up Daddy’s mess. And, Luke, honey, what on earth is this red liquid?

Uh, well, I was trying to make strawberry pancakes for you, he said sheepishly.

Um, maybe we should leave the cooking to me from now on, she said with a smile.

The next morning, Cassandra, Luke and Bryan sat around the coffee table to have their Bible reading and prayer as they did every Sunday morning that they did not make it to church. Two hours later, they had the car packed and ready to head home.

Mommy, can’t we stay another day?

Aw, sweetie, I’m sorry but Daddy has to work tomorrow.

Well, can we come back next weekend?

I don’t know, baby. I don’t see why not but we’ll talk about it later, okay?

Okay! This is the bestest place in the whole wide world! I wish we could live here!

    Sometimes I do too, sweetie.

The three piled into the car and turned on Bryan’s favorite Bible song CD. As they slowly wound their way down the mountain, Bryan began singing at the top of his lungs to his favorite song. Soon after, Luke and Cassandra joined in. Cassandra turned to smile at her child and hope that he always kept that special love for Jesus. It was so pure and strong. She wished that she would have had someone to introduce her to Jesus when she was small. Mother and child shared a smile until Luke shouted from the seat beside her.

Slow down! he screamed fruitlessly at the truck heading straight for them. Get in your own lane!

Cassandra could do no more than say the name Jesus before Luke swerved to miss the truck and their car went over the side of the mountain and began
