    Chapter One

I wasn’t crying. Tears were useless when all of the decisions had been made, all fates sealed. If I was going to cry, I would have done it weeks ago when my father made the announcement. When he asked me to give myself over to a stranger to strengthen our pack.

I would be alpha one day, and an alpha sacrificed for her pack.

But they usually chose their own mates.

No. I needed to stop dwelling. I had chosen Geoffrey. Even if I had never met him. Even if I didn’t know whether or not we would suit. It was my choice to follow through with this and it wasn’t a mistake.

    Riley, are you back there?

Jake Marshall walked through the entrance to the small pantry in the back of the kitchen where I’d barricaded myself to have my little wallow. His broad form took up the entire doorway, his short brown hair nearly brushing against the frame. He had towered over me since we were sixteen, but he never made me feel small.

He wore his soldier’s uniform, unrelenting black pants and a thick black cotton shirt with a black leather jacket. It was designed to ward off the sharpest of claws yet still provide enough movement to fight an angry werewolf. At twenty-four, he was just as old as I was. Only one month separated us and I could not remember a time that I didn’t know him. His mother was our pack’s healer and had spent many long days nursing my own mother when he and I were children. I think that I spent more time in their quarters than I had in my own family’s before I was eight years old.

But Jake had turned away from his family’s tradition and joined solider training when he was seventeen.

It only counts as crying if you do it in your room, right? Or with a tub of ice cream in front of you? He sat down next to me and let his leg brush against my own.

I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from responding to the contact. I was going to meet my future mate in less than an hour, I couldn’t let myself respond to another man right now. Especially not Jake.

I’m not crying, I said it out loud this time.

Jake grabbed my hand and entwined our fingers. I leaned my head against his shoulder and let my tawny hair brush against
