    Introduction

Welcome! If we were making this journey in person, we’d be starting out with a smile, a hug, and lots of laughter. Have fun with this!

In addition to this book, the only things you’ll need for this journey are a Tarot deck and your sense of adventure. My favorite way to choose a deck is to look through the artwork on the cards. If I love the images, I know I’ll enjoy using the deck.

Reading Tarot is a skill that everyone can develop. It’s an adventure in learning a new language and the more you read the more fluent you’ll become. This journey is designed to gradually develop your knowledge of the cards and how to read them. Go through this as quickly as you want to and be patient with your learning process when you need to. Soon you’ll be doing great readings about any topic you focus on.

My way of seeing Tarot is one of many ways. For the sake of learning, please look at Tarot my way while you’re on this journey. Your own way of reading will develop as you become familiar with the cards and the ways that you receive messages through them.

    Have fun!

Using Tarot to See Beyond the Obvious

    Step 1

Tarot Reading is the art of gaining clarity by discovering what’s beyond the obvious.

This practice is based on the premise that there is something within reach of our conscious minds that has more insight than we sometimes do and will relay accurate information to us upon request.

Tarot Reading is a way to accelerate growth.

A reading can provide clear answers to almost any question. It can also help us get creative and think outside of the box. We each settle into patterns of perception and view the events of our lives through those patterns. The skillful use of Tarot can help us see from other perspectives and find solutions to puzzles that have seemed impossible to resolve.

Tarot Readings can help us see the future we’re creating.

The future is always changeable and readings can be our eyes into the future. Readings can show us how to create our lives as we truly desire them to be. They can show us when to fine tune actions or shift direction. They can show us potential results and how to change course if some of the results aren’t to our liking. A reading is an excellent way to learn what to do now to ensure the outcome is one that’s really desired.

Tarot Readings can be used to answer questions about any topic and any level of consciousness.

Normal daily situations, soul purpose, life path, past/future/concurrent lives, and more are clearly visible to a reader who focuses on learning to see them. The ability to gather information about these aspects of our being depends on the skill, clarity, focus, and openness of the reader.

Tarot Readings can take some of the effort out of life.

When we clearly see the results of today, living it well takes less effort.

Reading the cards intuitively provides the best accuracy.

Memorized meanings can only bring limited answers. You’ll read skillfully much more quickly by using the meaning of a card as a starting place for your thinking rather than using it as an absolute definition.

Intuitive insights occur naturally for all of us.

Reading Tarot, like any other intuitive skill, is the art of paying attention to the subtle information that we often overlook, dismiss, or minimize. Developing your ability to read Tarot is about developing your ability to notice on all levels. This includes exploring possibilities that are outside of expected or established responses, experiences, and perspectives. It includes looking beyond perceived reality to see what else is possible and being open to the idea that the illogical or unbelievable may be exactly what’s true or needed in some situations.

Accurate interpretation is dependent on the reader’s ability to set aside emotional and belief based filters.

Your accuracy as a reader will be greatly enhanced if you begin with the willingness to set aside fear, set aside your beliefs about how things should be, and set aside any desire to avoid dealing with the reality of a situation. If you read through any of these filters it will be difficult to accurately understand how the information you receive applies to the situation being read about.

Developing your accuracy as a reader is important and gentleness with your own humanity is equally important. Even the most skilled readers will sometimes misinterpret the information received. Expect frequent misinterpretation while you’re developing your ability to set aside your own perspectives during a reading.

If a reading is inaccurate, ask for clarity.

If you did the reading, ask yourself the same question at another time or ask someone else. If someone else read for you, take the information into your mind and body, keep what fits, and let go of the rest.

    Tarot Decks

Traditional decks include 78 cards that are divided into the Major Arcana and the four suits of the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana and each suit of the Minor Arcana represent one of the esoteric elements that are primary foundations of human life.

These elements are: Spirit, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.

Some decks include additional Minor Arcana suits or additional Major Arcana cards. Typically these either focus more deeply on something that is addressed in the traditional deck, or they introduce levels of awareness that are not already addressed.

    Examples:

In Radiant Wisdom Tarot, the Suit of Bridges focuses entirely on the process of manifestation ~ how to move from an idea to a real life result.

An additional Major Arcana card may focus on messages from loved one’s in Spirit, or fully awakening the human soul.

The Major Arcana cards represent human archetypes.

The traditional Major Arcana (Spirit) includes 22 cards focused on aspects of life that are prevalent in human experience. They represent ideas, desires, and experiences that appear in most people and cultures. These are the things that form the larger framework of our lives.

These cards will have a number on them and probably a name. Usually there is no suit indicated.

    Element – spirit

Energy – soul, awareness of interconnection with all

The Minor Arcana cards represent personal dynamics.

The traditional Minor Arcana includes four suits; each suit has 14 cards. Suits: Air (Swords), Fire (Wands), Water (Cups), and Earth (Pentacles).

The cards within each suit represent our personal reactions and responses, responsibilities and opportunities, activities, struggles, joys, fears, and hopes. These are the things that form the content of our days.

These cards will probably have a number on them and either a word or symbol indicating the suit. They may also have a name.

Air (Swords) – also called Blades, Pipes, Crystals, or Diamonds

    Element – air

Energy – mind, thinking, creative inspiration

The Symbolism of Numbers and Colors

    Step 2

What’s your favorite number? What’s your favorite color? The answers to those two questions say more about you than you may think.

There are esoteric meanings for numbers and colors that provide additional layers of information when a reader interprets each card. Some decks do not follow this information exactly. When you see a card that doesn’t follow this format, look more deeply and creatively at what you do see and you’ll find many nuances of meaning.

    Numbers

The number on a card provide information about the card’s placement in the progression of energy represented by each suit. This progression begins with the foundation energy that’s always available to each of us. This is a native aspect of being human such as the ability to feel, think, and do. From there the energy expands to include multiple levels of skill at applying the foundation energy to our unique variety of experiences.

The traditional Major Arcana includes 22 cards, beginning with 0 and ending with 21. The energy progresses from 0 to 21, creating a full circle of knowledge that begins with innocent openness and ends with experienced wisdom.

The traditional Minor Arcana includes 56 cards divided into four suits of 14 cards each. The cards are numbered the same way in each suit, usually this is 1 thru 10, followed by these 4 people cards:

    Mystic (Princess, Page, Apprentice, 11)

    Achiever (Prince, Knight, 12)

    Nurturer (Queen, Teacher, 13)

    Keeper (King, Shaman, 14)

The energy in the Minor Arcana suits progresses from 1 to Keeper (King). Again creating a full circle of knowledge that begins with innocent openness to the energy of
