    Introduction

To most people—including many Christians who truly long to have a close relationship with God—the Bible is a formidable book. The excuses offered for not studying the Bible are varied and usually include at least one of the following:

There are too many words I don’t know the meaning of

    It’s too hard to understand

It’s too difficult to keep everything straight

Some of it is just too hard to believe

    I don’t have time

There are so many different kinds of Bibles it’s difficult to know which one to read

Yes, the Bible is somewhat of a big book, and yes, there are parts that are difficult to understand. But that can’t keep you from reading and studying the Bible—not if you truly want to grow in your relationship with God.

Think about this: when you sit down in a classroom, start a new job, or even try a new recipe, what would happen if you refused to read the textbook, listen to those who were training you for the job, or tossed the cookbook back in the drawer because you decided these things were too hard to understand, would take too long to learn, or you didn’t want to devote the time necessary to learning what you were there to learn?

We all know what would happen. You would fail the class, soon be jobless, and the recipe would be a big flop. But you wouldn’t do any of these things, would you? Of course not! You’d never accomplish anything if you approached life like that.

News flash!!! Knowing what the Bible says is as essential to living a Christian life as the driver’s
