The Second Time Around
ONE
Mom, are we really leaving this time?
We really are.
Stacy Samuels hugged her twelve year old son, Chance, with one arm and picked up their suitcase with the other. She had packed that same suitcase fifteen times in the last year, always intended to leave Roger, but then always backing down at the last second. I can't survive on my own. I can't be a single parent. I can't find anyone but Roger to love me. I can't get a job. I can't, I can't, I can't. Her mind always talked her out of leaving, when everything else in her so-called life was begging to go. Fifteen years of abuse had worn her down. Stacy didn't much care what happened to herself anymore, but when Roger raised his fist to Chance, that was the last straw. There was no way she would let Chance suffer what she did. They were getting out and they were getting out now.
But where will we go?
Somewhere where Dad can't find us.
Stacy lead the way to the bus station. It was too risky taking the car. They needed to leave as little of a paper trail as possible. That meant no license plate to trace, no credit card receipts. Until they were settled someplace far, far from here, Stacy intended to pay only in cash for everything they needed. She had been planning this for months – taking out money little by little so Roger wouldn't get suspicious. Twenty bucks here, thirty there, he wouldn't miss. He'd question large sums and she didn't want to lie more than she already was. There was a time she loved Roger but that all seemed like a distant memory now.
––––––––
Think of this like a really big adventure. We get to ride a bus and pick a new place to live. We can go just about anywhere, you and me. I'll never let anything happen to you. I promise.
Stacy smoothed back Chance's sandy hair. He looked far too much like his father. Every time she looked at him, she was reminded of the boy she used to love. Somewhere along the line, he had become a man she feared and hated.
Can we go to Disney World?
Stacey thought a moment before nodding. "Florida sounds nice. It's going to be a long bus ride, though. Are you up for
