About this ebook
A compelling short story about Hugh Lang and his discovery of the small community of Jupiter’s Corner. He referred to it as a ‘safe place’; a place located east of Savannah, Georgia, where a Negro family felt safe from the oppression of racism in 1927. Here he married Anna Mae Bacon, they worshiped together at the New Hope Baptist Church, they raised their children, and they purchased land to add to their small spread. Fast forward to 2010 and Hugh is now buried in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Anna Mae is 98 years old and of sound mind. She has held a secret for more than fifty years and decided to share it with her great great granddaughter. By the end of her story she makes a decision that will change the lives of her entire family.

About the Author
IN THE BEGINNING
Jupiter’s Corner, Georgia, isn’t there anymore. It was a little community southeast of Savannah where white folks had pushed black folks against the lands of the estuaries of the southern sound off of the Atlantic Ocean. By the mid-twentieth century many of the descendants of the earlier settler refused to live the subservient lifestyle and moved north; even their elders abandoned the land and followed, while others died off, and their descendant sold off Jupiter’s Corner to the savvy land developers parcel by parcel.
The early years of Jupiter’s Corner came about due to purpose; it was a time when Negroes and whites had specific needs. The city of Savannah had its supply of servants and laborers corralled down Sweet Pea Road: cooks, carriage drivers, carpenters, nannies, laundry workers, housekeeper, blacksmith, seamstress, field hands, and such. The Negroes were free; they owned their own land, had their own church and school, and were in high demand for work. The best thing about Jupiter’s Corner was that they were free in a community where whites seldom visited.

Santee, South Carolina, was no place for a young Negro. Vera and Jackson Lane had feared for their oldest son, Hugh since his birth. It was general sport for the ‘good old cracker boys’ of Santee to select a Negro man-child for humiliation and murder because their level of hate
