Chapter 1: A Quick History Of Candy
Forget the apple story. Yes, Eve did offer Adam a fateful piece of fruit, but she chopped it up first and mixed it with honey (maybe some nuts, too), and Adam gazed upon it and saw it was good.
He tasted it and said, Wow! Sweet! What do you call it?
You tell me,
Eve said, you’re the one who’s supposed to be naming things.
She smiled.
And Adam suddenly thought she looked pretty sweet herself. He smiled, too.
Whereupon God, who sees everything, could see where this was leading, of course, and had no choice but to cast them from the garden. And that’s how man lost Eden—but since he gained candy in the process, no one has ever much complained. In fact, many have considered it a more than fair trade.

In actuality the art of confectionary dates back thousands of years, to biblical times and beyond. The ancient Egyptians made candies sweetened with honey, while sugar cane was first cultivated in India and the Far East. From there, caravanned along the ancient trade routes, sugar wended its way westward and reached Europe during the time of the Crusades. But the long trek made it a precious commodity, sold by the ounce, and only the wealthy could afford it. Such was its early value, sugar was classed as
