    Preface

Life is a series of journeys. We all begin somewhere, and it just so happens I began on a gravel road in the country. If highways are the arteries of society, then gravel roads are the capillaries which lead to the last mile. I did not stay on those back roads though, and traveled to other places on many journeys. Maybe one long journey? But, in many ways I never left those gravel roads, and they never left me even though they are now mostly paved. It seems as if time has put a veneer over us both which hides our true origins to the casual observer. But, poetry is more than a casual observer.
