    Chapter One

He’s so smug. Just look at him prancing around in those three-piece suits with slicked back dark hair just speckled with gray. It’s a wonder that he doesn’t dye it outright and go full throttle with the lie. I bet he thinks the gray adds just a hint of character, and if I didn’t know him better, I might say that that was damn right. He’s never not smiling, smirking, and I want to smack that smug expression from his face when he draws closer to my side at the elevator bank. As soon as our eyes lock, I manage to smile, not smirk, and I lay a light hand on his arm, my body unwillingly buzzing at this touch when he cocks his head to the side.

Good day for a win, he says. Am I right, or am I right?

He was so very many things. But right was not one of them.

We step through the sliding metal doors and stand in silence as a barrel chested man bellows into his phone and a frizzy redhead fumbles with her tablet. I almost want her to drop it, to have no choice but to bend over in a futile effort to retrieve the device. I wanted her royal blue skirt to tear to shreds. He might play the white knight; god knows I’d fallen for that one ten times or twenty. And as for the other guy, he’d probably go the Instagram route and garner a million hits on the back of the girl’s tears and embarrassment. Maybe I should push her to help his cause along; I wanted to see someone else slip and hurt for a change.

And if he had to go down in her lap for the ride, then so much the better.

The tablet did indeed begin to trip through her fingers, and I nearly elbowed the big guy’s ribs when he, Luis, made the move to help her out before she came crashing down. I thought of pushing my foot forward to cut him off. But the man moved too fast, and he caught the ginger girl’s iPad in midair, twirling it around his fingers before tossing it up and catching the tablet just as quickly and with so much skill. Like he was ever going to make a move without looking graceful.

Careful, Miss, Luis said. These things don’t come cheap.

The redhead was as obvious as Carrie on prom night, before the fire. Who wouldn’t totally fall in love with him at first glance? Every girl in the office was fawning all over him, wanting to get a piece of his pie. To him, we were all interchangeable.
