    Just Be - R. I. Hope

    The Gambler

Ed is packing his tweed overnight bag for his regular weekend trip to Atlantic City, New Jersey to play his favorite game, blackjack, at the Bravo casino.

Sylvia stands in the door with her bed head hair donned in plaid robe and well-worn slippers. Deep disappointment is etched on her plump face. Not again, Ed. she whimpers. Sylvia knows he’s headed to gamble, a hobby that has almost ruined they're once stable union. It has put a huge dent in their budget, as well.

Sheepishly, Ed responds, I’ve got to win back my losses from the last few times that I played, Sylvia. Don’t you remember, babe, that I sometimes win?

Actually, I remember the odds and they stack up to — mostly, you lose, which adds up to — we lose, Ed.  Ed winks. But when I win, I win big, don’t I — don’t we?

Sylvia responds with disgust. In the WHOLE of the matter, Ed, you’re not even breaking even. You know it, and I know it. Who is being fooled here, Ed? Nobody. You need to stop.

Undeterred, Ed exclaims, What can I say, Sylvia? We know that I love the blackjack game.

"Evidence mounts, Ed, that it doesn’t love you." Sylvia loudly exhales as she leaves the room. Repeatedly, over the years, she’s attempted, to no avail, to convince her husband that he’s gone overboard with his gambling jaunts. Thousands of dollars have been spent at casinos. Bill payments are late, needs are ignored, desires, such as vacations, are out of the equation because Ed’s a slave to blackjack.

Ed is ready to go to serve his master. He attempts to kiss peck on his wife’s cheek.

She turns and gives him her back. He hesitates, picks up his bag and leaves. Sylvia’s weariness has escalated. She wonders, Will Ed’s addiction ever end? We need so much and he keeps wasting money that should be spent in wise ways. I’m so sick of living like this. Sylvia sighs and goes to load the dishwasher. She looks upward and pleads, God, I’ve not been much engaged with You, but please help in this situation. Please.

Ed is bothered by the concern that Sylvia displays. But he just doesn’t care enough to end his gaming pursuits. This weekend he’s driving to Jersey sans his gambling partner, Brent. He had an unexpected need to address so this is the first weekend that Ed has gone solo.

Ed drives the ninety minutes cranking Billy Joel on his car stereo. Yes, indeed, the piano man has long been one of Ed’s favorites. With his ride on cruise control and windows open to enjoy the soft breezes, Ed sings along with Joel. Every so often, he feels a twinge of guilt for the state of his wife and the damage done to their marriage and finances. He pushes his regrets aside, though, to continue his selfish agenda.

Ed’s blue Buick approaches the Bravo casino. There’s a huge crowd gathered in front of the building. Ed parks and rushes to the scene. Yellow police tape is wrapped around the area. Ed approaches a well-dressed, bald-headed man.

    Hi, what happened?

The man slowly shakes his head, sadness evident in his creased face. A guy suffered catastrophic losses at the blackjack table, and couldn’t bear the reality. They say he was a regular who did more losing than winning. It looks like today he cracked under the pressure. He jumped to his death from the roof of the building.

Ed’s mouth gapes open; his eyes bulge in shock. He staggers backward.

Are you okay. the man asks in concern.

Ed turns and runs to his car. In panic, he dials his wife. Sylvia answers. I’m coming home. He doesn’t wait for her to respond. Ed disconnects the call.

    Puzzled, Sylvia phones back.

Ed doesn’t answer. He waits a few moments before he turns off his phone. The broken man leans his head on the steering wheel and weeps.

    Aftermath:

Ed tells Sylvia the horror of what happened in Jersey. She remembers her plea to God. Ed never gambles again.

They both chose to devote their lives to righteousness. Eventually, healthy restoration manifests in the union with Sylvia, Ed’s long-suffering wife. They repair their financial status, as well.

God did indeed answer Sylvia — how and when He deemed fit.

    Proverbs 8:5 – KJV

O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

    The Splendor of Age Progression

Ah! Many hearken back to the days of youth. Oh, the cherished memories. But there’s such value, too, in the aging process. We can truly treasure its progression. There are things to hold dear in every category of development.

The freshness of youth has its advantages. The middle years are beneficial, as well. Sweetness does exist in living past the minds and graduating to senior seasons. Yep, plenty of pluses there.

When things began to go south on me, I called the process — southern hospitality. My wrinkles are road maps revealing my journey of growth — spiritually, mentally and physically. Bumps, collisions and detours happen along our ways. Thank God that, with excellence, He’s able. Isn’t it wonderful that He’s with us from the foundation of the world in every age dimension? The comfort of that awareness is huge.

Seniors dig into their vast reservoir of love, wisdom, and knowledge to pass on to those whose ages haven’t afforded them the experiences exclusive to seniors. Elders share of the manifold joys and pleasures of life. They also warn of the pitfalls, the changes in relationships, the workplace challenges, and the losses and gains in love. They tell about their mistakes, successes, and they cause laughter when sharing about some of the crazy. fun, and embarrassing things that they and others did in their growth journeys.

Immeasurable value is contained in the contributions of those who have been there, done that. Observations have revealed that the jewel truths imparted aren’t always heeded. We expect that our wise counsel will sometimes be ignored. We’ve also lived long enough to experience those who blew off our counsel — return with egg on their faces when they discover that the elders were right. We understand because we have had to eat our share of crow. too. And we also realize that some things penetrate best through personal experiences.

Time waits for no one. It moves as assigned. Yep, those calendar pages turn as days, weeks, months and years arrive. We’re in motion as age continues and we walk into the newness of the differences. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: – Ecclesiastes 3:1 – KJV. Beauty is indeed resident in our assorted developments.  Yes!

We learn from the youth and they learn from us. The blend is a valuable and precious balance. It has the potential . . . and on numerous occasions, the mix adds up to harmonious engagements.

I haven’t yet reached senior status but have a firm appreciation for what they add to this great planet earth.

    Psalm 92:14 – KJV

They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; . . .

    Love Blazes

Is there any more powerful energy force than the love of our Father, God? Love explodes with rapture galore. It magnifies, invigorates, challenges, equips, corrects and so much more. It is a blaze of the fires of life. Love engulfs, penetrates, engages and questions. It stings, shatters, shakes and unsettles. Love is living in its countless differences. We love love.

Love is assorted in its pleasantries. So much is wrapped up in the gift of love. Love is rich beyond anything that exists. Love changes, transforms and teachers. Really, can we think of anything more valuable than love? Truly, it’s in a class all its own.

Sometimes we think that love isn’t fair. We often don’t understand it. Circumstances can require that we get off the merry-go-round of love relationships. We question how love can begin so grand and then enter dimensions of utter waste and turmoil. How can love have healthy relationship seasons and then later turn toxic? How can folks love and betray us?

We embrace the plentiful wonders of love. We don’t want to give up on it in spite of what we’ve learned about the variables. Love is too potent to forsake, regardless.

We lick our wounds and give love more chances. How delightful when we do settle into lasting and abiding love postures. It’s great pleasure indeed. For sure, love is worth all that we endure to experience and embrace it. Yes, the energy of love is immense in depth and excellence. Woo wee — the love fire burns with vivid intensity. Liquid flames flow and pour into our eager hearts.

Love isn’t always reciprocated or appreciated. It blooms anyhow. Love cannot be stopped. It can be hindered — but never stopped. It goes on in the midst of whatever surfaces. What a joy to experience and to share the love. Ain’t nothing like it — no, indeed.

Song of Solomon 8:7 – KJV

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: . . .

    Every Day Is Thanksgiving

Today is thanksgiving. Yesterday was thanksgiving. Tomorrow is thanksgiving. Yes, every day is indeed thanksgiving.

God owns the air; what a privilege to breathe the air He owns. We are loved bountifully. Appreciation swells for that awareness. Provisions are supplied. Yes, we get what we need and sometimes what we desire. We’ve learned to be thankful for the seasons and what they bring to us.

We’re taught boundaries. That is sure a good thing. There are reasons to put on brakes and reasons to go full speed ahead. We need to discern when, what, who and how. Stop and go can be lessons well ingrained.

Children enter our lives and bring more love, joys, sorrows and uncertainties. We love and help them anyhow because love is like that — caring, forgiving and fixing messy actions. We lead our children by examples and allow them to learn that actions have consequences.

Life happens with its varied twists, turns, ups and downs, but we press ahead in spite of the known and unknown occurrences. Balances exist in life to keep us aware and grounded. We need the changes to mold, purge, prune, and to build us for the next episodes. Yep, see-saw happenings are par for our courses. We can become better for the experiences.

Truly, every day is thanksgiving. We enjoy the sunshine and the rain. We walk
