Chicago, Illinois - 1888
Even though Melissa’s one desire was to leave Chicago forever and go as far away as she possibly could, she knew she would miss her mother terribly. But things had gotten to a point where she felt as though she was going to explode with the suppressed emotions that were simmering within her. Her mother was only forty-two, but because of a debilitating illness she looked nearly ten years older. She worked so hard to provide for the both of them and Melissa did not want to be a burden to her any more.
The nineteen-year-old girl sat at her mother’s desk twirling a lock of hair in her left hand, while her right held a fountain pen. Her green eyes were glued to the newspapers that she normally perused, which her mother brought every Saturday from the mayor’s house.
Melissa Abbot was the only child of Teresa Abbot, a soft spoken and gentle woman who worked as a housekeeper for the mayor of Chicago. Her father, a dock worker, had died when Melissa was only ten years old and for a while they had to move in with her aunt Alice, her mother’s younger sister. Fortunately her mother found work as the mayor’s housekeeper and soon she could afford a small two bedroom house which was not so far from her place of work. So, the two of them moved away, much to Alice’s chagrin and Melissa’s relief.
Now her mother was set to retire because of her painful arthritis, which would mean moving back into Aunt Alice’s place − and that was something that did not bear thinking about. Melissa felt that her aunt hated her because she was not easily cowed, nor did she bow to pressure, and boy could her aunt nag. If she did not get away in the next few months there was no telling what would happen if the two of them had to live under one roof.
There was only one option open to her, and it was an idea that she had been toying with for a while. Because Melissa loved to read her mother would bring her the periodic magazines and newspapers that the mayor and his family discarded. Going through some of them she had come across adverts from men out in the Wild West seeking mail order brides. At first the idea had seemed ridiculous to Melissa, and she and Amanda Weston, her best friend and age mate, had discussed and laughed about it.
Can you imagine a young lady leaving her home for the unknown, going to meet a man for the first time and getting married to him, how ridiculous is that?
Melissa had pointed at one of the adverts. Do people do things like that?
They must, and that is why there are many adverts of that nature. It seems as though there is a terrible scarcity of women out in the west, so men have to send east for wives.
Amanda had shaken her head. "I cannot imagine being that brave. Just the thought of leaving my
