ABOUT THE AUTHOR
CHAPTER ONE
Las Cruces, New Mexico – 1888
Joseph Carrillo sat on his horse, Black Thunder, atop the small hill overlooking his family’s ranch. His grandfather Alejandro Carrillo had been gifted the vast stretch of land by Colonel Stephen Kearny, the commander of the army of the west during the Mexican-American War, almost ten years before Joseph was born. Alejandro Carrillo and a number of his Mexican neighbors had helped the Colonel to take Santa Fe and large parts of New Mexico without a single shot being fired. And for their loyalty to him, Colonel Kearny had gifted the loyal men with large tracts of farm and ranch land.
The Carrillo Rancho was a lush area in the fertile Mesilla Valley, which had been formed by repeated heavy spring floods of the Rio Grande River. Most of the Carrillo’s neighbors owned large and flourishing vineyards. This made Mesilla Valley one of New Mexico’s best wine producing areas, a skill that had originated with the Spanish exploration into New Mexico decades ago.

When he died fifteen years later, Joseph was just five years old, and the large ranch passed on to his son Louis Carrillo, Joseph’s father.
Louis had shared his father’s forward thinking vision and added cattle as part of the stock on his land – allowing him to supply the United States Army with cattle and in time even taking the them north to sell in the new territories that were opening up. He had also introduced corn to the farm, and this became a staple food for his workers as well as his animals. In turn thousands of acres were planted with the cereal and the surplus was also sold to the army. At the time of his death just six months ago the Carrillo Ranch was the most successful in Las Cruces and Joseph was a very rich young man indeed.
But Joseph’s inheritance had come not only with the loss of his precious father, but also with the addition of sharp-eyed suitors who
