      You’re not actually going to do this, are you? Kelsey asked.

      Marie looked back from the front door, taking her hand off the knob.

      Seriously? she asked, raising her eyebrow at her roommate. I asked you what you thought about it a week ago and you said it sounded empowering.

      Kelsey shrugged. Empowering from an academic standpoint, she said. But now you’re doing it.

      Yes, I’m doing it, Marie said, feeling a little exasperated. I need the cash. The rent must be paid.

      True, but you don’t have to take your clothes off for it, Kelsey said. If you want, I’ll let your share of this month’s rent go.

      Marie shook her head. That’s not going to work and you know it, she said. I don’t want you to get behind anymore than I want to get behind.

      I just don’t want you to hate yourself afterward, Kelsey called as Marie turned back to the door.

      It’s for art, Marie said, grabbing her keys from the hook and jerking the door open. It’s not like I’m going out whoring.

      Closing the door behind her was a relief. She was sure Kelsey was judging her up and down with those eyes of hers. Marie loved her roommate and couldn’t ask for a better one in the world, but Kelsey was a little uptight and full of judgment.

      The job in question was posing as a nude model for a sketching class down at the local college. Marie had stumbled across the advertisement in a newspaper she’d pilfered at the local coffee shop where she worked part time. If they were going to through them away to clear the way for the next day’s news, Marie didn’t see a problem
