About this ebook

The Heart Has Its Reasons, Looking Back Looking Ahead. What if we could look ahead while still looking back? What if hard-won insight was ours to use when we needed it? This short book puts such possibilities within our reach. In a series of brief articles, the author explains important thoughts in relating to God, oneself and others. These insights, gained with age and experience, nudge us to find a new path. Then the rest of our journey becomes transforming. With God back in the center, others in their rightful place, and we striving harder, our relationships could regain the luster they once had. The heart, the seat of love, looks back to learn lessons and looks ahead in hope. When lessons of the past become sentinels for the future, we gain peace and joy. To attain that state we must learn to open our hearts to God and others. The theme on the heart throbs in the two parts of the book: One, Love yourself and bleed for others; two, Love God above all else. Twenty-two chapters, a Prologue and an Epilogue pump love-loaded blood.
Here are some drops from that blood:
* Reflections on the year gone by
* Does evil serve a purpose?
* Does pain heal?
* How do we respond to those who offend us?
* A crusade for healing * Why do we treat God so badly?
The author does not stop at asking questions. In a simple and direct style he answers them - without preaching. Journey with him to look upon a new horizon!

Foreword

Here is a book – The Heart Has Its Reasons, Looking Back Looking Ahead - that makes you stop to ponder and take with you a thought or two. Let us sample the fare it offers:

When age sets in thoughts that did not occur to us in youth visit us. We redefine relationships that we took for granted. We take up activities that we were too busy to perform when we were young; we find pleasure in the ordinary things of life and begin to value life even as we prepare to say farewell. It is a time of awakening, a time of discovery.

Let us consider our relationships because our greatest wealth is not measured in terms of riches, but relationships; and the quality of life will come down to the contribution we make to building and enriching relationships.

When we repent the misdeeds of our past we can resolve to find new meaning in the future.

Such eye-opening, down to earth and challenging thoughts are strung together in this book. It reflects the thinking habit and intellectual acumen of Ignatius Fernandez. A glimpse at some of the titles of the chapters will convince us of the relevance of this book:

Reflections on the Year Gone By

A Visit to the Cemetery

Does Evil Serve a Purpose?

How Do We Respond to Those Who Offend Us?

The Best Things in Life Are Free

Playing Catch-Up with God!

The thoughts are of Christian inspiration and stimulating, the language is mellifluous and racy, and the book makes pleasant reading. This is a valuable book that can surely help the interested reader towards betterment of self and of society, and for that reason the author deserves the gratitude of the reading public. I wish very many people profit from this treasure chest.

Prologue

We are not limited by our age; we are liberated by it. ~ Stu Mittleman

Hello!

In the pages that follow, I have tried to share with you some thoughts that occurred to me, when Age began to befriend me. As you read them, I hope you stop to ponder and take with you a thought or two that is relevant to your situation.

When we are young we are full of ourselves. We think we know. We have an exaggerated opinion of our skills and capabilities. We believe we can accomplish much, without the help of others. We do not need advice, since we have all the answers. And, we do not want to step off the pedestal we have constructed for ourselves. We try to live an unreal life.

But with age, things change. We suffer from knocks – we are bruised and battered and the hot air that once filled us leaks. We turn aside to wet our parched lips, only to find a gall-soaked sponge touch them. We try to achieve much, but accomplish little. We realize that we are not as smart as we imagined. We discover that we too have feet of clay. Our misadventures and blunders haunt us and slowly we come to terms with reality. Then we try to step out of the unreal world we once occupied. Most of us who age do; but some cling to their unreal-lives. Sadly, mistakes of their youth continue into old age.

When age sets in thoughts that did not occur to us in youth visit us, much to our amazement and joy. We find God (rather, He finds us, because He is always looking for the lost ones) and learn to trust Him above all. We redefine relationships that we took for granted. We take up activities that we were too busy to perform when we were young; we find pleasure in the ordinary things of life and begin to value life even as we prepare to say farewell. We learn to be more accommodating, and bless more than curse. We learn to be more detached from things and people – willing to let go. And, importantly, we fear death no more. It is a time of awakening, a time of discovery.

The Heart Has Its Reasons, Looking Back Looking Ahead. Why did I choose this title? For two reasons: One, it sounded good and I liked it; two, for long the heart has been identified with feelings, and feelings prompt action in many of us, as the psychologists contend. So, I hoped that my readers would be
