    Chapter One

See you in thirty minutes, babe. Can’t wait for us to make it official.

A besotted smile on his face, Tyler Kent ended the conversation and pocketed his phone. Hopefully his gorgeous bride, Beverly, would make it to City Hall on time. Eager to get out of the restaurant where he’d stopped for a late lunch after a series of unexpected meetings at the hospital, he headed toward the door, tripping over something at knee-level.

Ouch, you mean. You hurt me. The small child wrapped in pink from top to bottom pummeled his thighs with her gloved fists.

Hey, stop that, he scolded, trying to find a face under the pink hood.

You’re mean. The little fists kept punching his leg.

Enough. His rough tone must have scared her because she stepped back and plopped down on the floor against the restaurant’s exit door. I didn’t see you. You’re the one who—

What was he doing discussing with a munchkin? He surveyed his surrounding for an adult but saw no one approaching the child. Where’s your mommy?

    Mommy’s doing potty.

Ah… Not a good reason for a mother to leave her little one roaming around on her own. Why did you leave her?

Mommy said to wait at the door. This is a door. I didn’t find another one there. She pointed toward the restroom.

The little girl was none of his business, but he didn’t feel comfortable leaving her alone in the restaurant, sitting on the cold floor, in a breezy doorway.

Don’t sit here. You might catch cold.

As a pediatric cardiologist, he had a tendency to worry about any child exposed to danger, especially in unusual circumstances like these.

I have to wait at the door, she repeated stubbornly and raised her head.

The hood fell back, revealing bluish green eyes set in an almond-colored face. The adorable little girl was way too pretty to be left alone in one of Long Island’s busy plazas, a few days before Christmas, with the dark clouds gathering in the sky predicting a snowstorm.

Uncomfortable with the situation, Tyler weighed his options, then called a waitress. I found this little girl here by herself. She claimed her mother is in the restroom. Would you check the restroom and tell the mother her daughter is waiting for her at the restaurant’s door?

    Right away.

A couple of minutes later, the waitress returned. There’s no one in the restrooms. The three stalls are open. I had a waiter check the men’s room. No one’s there either.

Bummer. Thank you, miss. But we can’t leave this kid by herself.

Sorry, sir. Not my business. I’ll call the manager. Maybe her mother abandoned her. We see a lot of crazy women these days. The waitress shook her head.

And maybe the poor woman is frantically looking for her daughter. He couldn’t leave the child alone. What’s your name, pumpkin?

Can’t say. She jerked back, her finger pointed at him. I don’t know you.

We have to find your mommy.

    Yes. Mommy gone potty.

She’s not there anymore. Come with me. We’ll look for her. He tried to take her hand.

She hid both hands behind her back and narrowed her eyes. You’re stranger. I can’t go with you.

Her mother had taught her well. But how could he help her if he didn’t know who she was?

His phone vibrated, and he pulled it out of his pocket. It was Beverly. As if he could forget about the wedding.

Hi Baby Boo, don’t fret. I’m almost at City Hall.

He hated when she called him that. He glanced at the child huddled against the door and huffed.

    I’m running late.

What? You better be there in five minutes.

Something came up, a patient who needs me. I’ll see you in fifteen minutes. Hopefully. More like thirty, considering the situation and traffic. Love you, he added to soothe her and ended the connection before she could scream at him.

A bald, heavy-set man with a thick beard approached them.

I’m the manager, Tom Gravy. What have we got here? He grabbed the girl’s shoulder and lifted her off the floor.

Her eyes widened with fear. No touch, you mean man, she screeched, pouted, and scrambled near Tyler. Help me, please. I want Mommy. Tears rolled on her cheeks.

Don’t worry, pumpkin. He smiled to reassure her. I’ll take you to your mommy.

    Yes, please.

He stooped to her level. You have to tell me your name so that I can call your mommy and tell her to come.

Okay. She put a hand on her mouth and whispered, Dalia.

Very good. Now we can call your mommy. Do you have a mic? he asked the manager.

    Yes, sir.

Call for Dalia’s mother to come to the reception desk.

We’ll do. Soon they heard. Dalia’s mother, can you come to the reception desk. Dalia’s mother… The message was repeated several times.

A few minutes later, the restaurant manager returned.

Good news. He smiled at the child. Dalia, your mom is waiting at the reception desk.

Tyler exhaled gratefully. You heard that, Dalia? Mommy is waiting for you. Let’s go and find her.

Okay. Afraid to take her hand and see her recoil, Tyler walked beside her, never letting her stray too far from his sight.

As they approached the desk, a blonde woman turned, her face pale. She gasped and ran toward them.

Mommy, Dalia squealed and hurried into the woman’s open arms.

Tears flowing along her cheeks, the young woman hugged her daughter and picked her up, wincing as if in pain. Oh my baby, I was so scared. Why did you leave?

Mommy, I looked for a door. There was no door in there.

They were wide opened. It’s okay baby. It’s okay. The young woman kept covering Dalia’s face with kisses.

Well, glad you found your mommy, Dalia, Tyler said with a smile.

Thank you so much for watching her. I was terrified. There are two other doors. I even went outside and walked around the building.

She was sitting on the floor against the restaurant door. Tyler pointed at the place where Dalia had been waiting. Once I realized she was on her own, I couldn’t leave here.

On the floor? No wonder I didn’t see her. She set Dalia on her feet and held out her hand. Thank you so much. I’m Sienna Perino.

Dr. Tyler Kent. They shook hands. Let’s get out of the way. He headed toward the wall. Sienna and Dalia followed him. Were you having dinner here?

No, I was shopping in the plaza, but had to use the restroom. We entered here. I wasn’t feeling well. She rubbed her stomach.

He glanced at her pale face, perspiration dotting her forehead. Her figure was hidden under her coat. Are you in pain? Maybe I can help.

Thank you, doctor. You’ve helped a lot by staying with my daughter. Eventually, I’ll make time to visit my doctor. She grimaced, her hand pressing her belly.

Dalia frowned. Mommy, you have that boo-boo in your tummy again? You sick?

Tyler reached the same conclusion. Digging his phone and a business card out of his pocket, he texted Beverly. Caught in an emergency situation. Running late. Sorry. Love you.

He gave the business card to Sienna, hoping he could convince her to trust him. I’m a pediatric cardiologist at Nassau Hospital, but my guess is that you may have appendicitis. When you were in the restroom, did you vomit?

Yes, that’s why I asked Dalia to wait outside near the door. I didn’t want to scare her.

Do you mind if I check you? Just a quick examination? It’ll only take a minute.

Her bluish-green eyes, so similar to her daughter’s, filled with apprehension and roamed over his face as she tortured her bottom lip with her teeth.

Just unzip your coat. I’ll press your belly over your clothes, he coaxed.

Nodding, she opened her coat revealing a beige sweater worn over a pair of brown leggings.

Point to the place that hurts.

    She did.

How about here? With the tip of two fingers, he touched the sweater and pressed. Does it hurt?

    Not much.

    And here?

Aw, she screamed and doubled over.

He reached across and touched her brow. You’re burning up. Obviously your appendix is inflamed. If you wait much longer, it may burst and that would be dangerous.

    I’ll see my GP tomorrow.

He shook his head. I don’t think you can wait that long. I suggest you go to the ER right now. I would take you, but I have a…an important appointment, and I’m already late. I’d rather call 9.1.1. They’ll be here quickly and take you to the hospital.

Panic filled her eyes. I can’t just go with them. What about Dalia? I have no one to watch her.
