Chapter One
Dara stuck her head out from under her blankets, and looked around. It had to be the thousandth time she’d woken up expecting to be back in her old apartment. How many years had it been?
Andrei slept at her side, and he didn’t wake when she stirred.
She slipped out of bed and tossed a silk robe around her shoulders. Then she hurried out of the room, along the landing, and through a side door onto the roof of the palace.
The first dawn light brightened the sky, but the sun hadn’t broken over the horizon yet. Dara wrapped the robe tighter around her shoulders and shivered, but she didn’t turn away. She kept her eyes on the growing light and held her breath.
At the moment the sun lifted its gleaming orb over the black line of horizon, Dara clamped her eyes shut and listened with all her might. The sun grew out of the dark distance, and golden light spread over the city, but she didn’t open her eyes. She listened and listened. The rays of sunlight struck her face and warmed her body at last.
The city sprang to life around her. Men shouted from the gates, and women called to their children. Voices echoed through the streets and rang on the stone walls. The light glowed on the roofs and windows. Life spread over the landscape.
Dara opened her eyes and sighed. Her shoulders sagged, and she dropped her eyes to her feet. She turned to go back to her room when a hand rested on her shoulder.
What are you doing out here?
Andrei asked.
She shook her head and turned away. You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.

he told her.
I had a dream,
she replied. I just came up here to see if it was true, but it isn’t. Let’s go inside. I’m hungry.
He followed her back inside, and she strode ahead of him back to her room. He closed the door behind him. Where’s Reeva? She should have started the fire by now.
Dara waved
