Somebody to Love Me - Julia Mangan

    Introduction

Jackie Houlihann was a sweet, sixteen year old girl. She lived with her parents until the day she was thrown out after she was attacked by to a friend of her father. Her parents wouldn't believe he could hurt her and demanded she apologize for saying he did. She refused to apologize and her parents threw her out. She moved in with her best friend, Tammy Carter, until graduation.

She is about five three with beautiful, long, curly, dark red hair and vibrant green eyes. She and her three friends were cheerleaders. She sang in choir with several of her friends. She was very friendly with everyone; even the kids at school that have teased her about her name since grade school. They called her Jackie Hooligan and made her cry back then. As she got older, she just ignored them mostly. Tammy's cousin, Joe Carter, always stood up for her and ran the bullies off. He was two years older than she and her friends.

She had learned to love him over the years but he'd never seemed to notice her unless she was being picked on. He is over six feet tall and has light auburn hair that he keeps a little longer than most of the other boys. She thought it looked good on him. His eyes are a light caramel color and sparkled when he was teasing and joking with her and her friends. She adored him from afar for years. She did manager to work up enough courage to ask him to dance one time but it felt strange. She was shy around the boys and he was a shy boy; so they were both uncomfortable. She cried herself to sleep that night and decided to try to forget him.

    PROLOG

    Prom Night Sophomore Year

Sam Weston had asked her to the prom. He was a junior and was excited that she hadn't been asked yet. He just wanted to 'be seen' with one of the cheerleaders and she just wanted to go to the Prom. She waited until the last minute to accept his invitation, hoping that Joe would ask her. He asked a tall brunette that was known to be 'Easy'. It broke Jackie's heart.

They were at the Prom for about an hour when she noticed Tammy and John leave. She envied her friend. She had found her true love. More important was that he loved her just as much. The Emcee announced The Lady's Choice Dance; she looked for her date and noticed him laughing and joking with his friends across the room. Gathering all the courage she could, she walked over to Joe. He was standing alone watching the dancers. She stood in front of him and cleared her throat.

Joe would you dance with me She asked timidly.

Don't you have a date tonight Little One? I thought I saw you come in on the arm of Sam Watson. What happened to him?

He's talking to his friends. If you don't want to, I'll just sit this one out. Sorry to bother you Joe.

Hang on a minute. I'll dance with you. I just thought you would be dancing with your date. Come on you're supposed to have fun at Prom. He said as he put a finger under her chin to lift her head. Come on. Let's do this ok.

She just nodded and let him lead her out on the floor. He held her loosely and moved stiffly around the floor. He was so tall. Every once in a while she'd glance up at him to see if he was noticing her. He finally looked down at her just before the song ended.

He smiled at her and asked if she was having fun. She shrugged her shoulders.

Sam has been with his friends all night. I've liked watching everyone laugh and dance. I'll get another Prom. I'm just glad to be here.

You should be dancing. Why didn't you ask Sam instead of me? He is your date.

I don't think he really wants to be here with me. As soon as we got here I heard him say, 'See I told you I could get a cheerleader to come with me tonight'. I figured that it didn't really matter because I just accepted so I could be here anyway.

I see. I'm sorry Little One. I thought you'd have tons of guys asking you to be their date tonight.

Nope, you forget I'm only Jackie Hooligan. Even as a cheerleader, I can't get away from it. I don't mind so much anymore though.

Well you should care. That's just wrong to make fun of something you have no control of.

Again, she just shrugged. His date walked up to them and asked what he was doing.

I've been looking all over for you Joe. This is the only Lady's Choice Dance tonight and I wanted to dance with MY date. Why are you dancing with the Hooligan anyway? Did you feel sorry for her?

That's enough Sarah. She is a friend of my cousin and you know that. She wanted to have at least one dance tonight and I thought that was a good idea. He turned back to Jackie and gave her a friendly hug. Thank you Little One for the dance. Have fun tonight and try not to let anyone upset you ok.

Ok Thanks Joe. I'm sorry to take your date away from you Sarah. Have a good night you two. She walked away and stood on the other side of the room watching Joe try to settle his date down. She felt bad for him. It wasn't long until they left. Sam left with his friends sometime while she was dancing with Joe so she was stranded.

Cassie, Carrie, and their dates let her ride home with them. She felt so bad that she wouldn't talk to anyone on the ride to Tammy's house.

    The Summer She Turned Sixteen

Jackie had just finished cheer practice. She was hot and tired. She went home to an empty house, as usual, to take a shower before meeting Tammy and the Lane Twins at the park. She came out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel. James, her dad's friend was standing across the room from her with his arms crossed just staring at her.

She clutched her towel tighter. James what are you doing here? My folks aren't here right now. You should leave.

He smirked at her. Yeah I know Baby. They went to that weekend retreat. They'll be gone for the whole weekend. I knew you'd be home alone and decided to come over and keep you company. He started moving toward her as if he were stalking a skittish animal.

James you need to leave. I have to get dressed and meet my friends. If I'm late, they'll come looking for me.

He just smiled and kept walking closer. She started backing into the bathroom slowly.

You've been showing off that cute little body whenever I'm around. You don't have to play hard to get Baby. I know what you want I'm here to give it to you.

No James. I don't want anything but for you to leave. Please leave me alone. She had just made it to the bathroom and reached for the door.

He reached out and grabbed her arm. I don't think so. You can't tease men and get away with it the way you do the little boys at school. I'm going to show you what happens to little teases like you. He pulled her against his chest and wrapped his arms around her tight.

Now are you going to play nice or do I have to get rough? I do like it a little rough. Maybe I can teach you some ways to have fun over the weekend.

No James, please just leave and I won't tell anyone. I just want you to go please.

I told you I'm here for the weekend. Now, you be a good girl and we can have fun. If not you may not like the consequences.

She started crying and he hit her. We will have none of that Little Girl. You have wanted this for a long time now. I was just waiting for the right time to give it to you. He tossed her on the bed and pulled her towel off.

She tried to cover herself but he grabbed her hands and held them above her head. He grabbed her breast and squeezed. When he tried to kiss her she bit him and received another slap in the face.

You will pay for that. I was going to be nice to you and make sure you enjoyed the first time. Now I'll be the only one enjoying the first time.

He spread her legs and when he entered her she fainted. The next thing she remembers is the pain and hearing him in the kitchen making something to eat. She grabbed her clothes and threw them on as quietly and quickly as she could. She climbed out her window and ran to the park hoping that her friends were still there.

They had already left and it was starting to get dark. She made her way to Tammy's house and went to the bedroom window. When she peaked in the window, she saw Tammy doing homework and knocked quietly. Tammy looked up and ran to the window.

    Tammy Supports Jackie

Jackie where have you been? Why didn't you just come in the front door like a normal person?" she laughed. As Jackie leaned closer to talk to her quietly, Tammy saw the hand prints on her cheeks.

Jackie what happened to you. Come in here and let me help you.

Tammy pushed the screen out and helped her in through the window. She looked at Jackie's face and got her two cold washcloths. She put them on both of her cheeks and asked again what happened.

Jackie started crying and buried her face in her hands. It hurt to sit down when Tammy pushed her down gently onto the bed. Jackie tried to get back up and when Tammy held her in place she cried harder. Tammy let her go and Jackie stood back up.

When she got herself under control, she told Tammy what had happened and they both cried and held each other. After a while they calmed down enough for Tammy to start thinking.

You need to tell your parents and the police. I've seen enough cop shows on TV to know that you should go to the hospital and make them call the police. Jackie my parents will take us. I'll stay right with you the whole time.

No Tammy I can't. My parents won't believe me anyway. You know how they are. Their friends and fundraisers are more important than I am. I just want a shower and to stay here until they get back in town. Do you think your parents will let me stay for the weekend?

Of course you can stay but you need to at least tell Chief Wright. He won't tell anyone. You know he thinks you're special. I think he would rather John be interested in you than me.

Jackie laughed. You know that's not true both of John's parents think you're the cat's meow. then giggled again. Thanks Tammy. I needed that. I just want to take a shower and forget this ok. Promise me you won't tell anyone; not even John. I know you two tell each other everything, but Tammy, I can't let anyone else know. Please.

I don't like it but I'll do what you ask. Now let me get you a warm bath started. I heard that you will be very sore after and especially if it was forced. Don't worry ok. I'll take care of you until you're ready to tell your parents. Then I'll be there with you the whole time.

I'm not telling them Tammy. I mean it. I will just deal with it myself. They would only be angry with me if I tell them. Please just let it go ok.

Fine I'll let it go for now but I will be talking about it later. I don't want them to let him back into the house with you again. Anytime they go out of town, I want you to stay with me. I mean it and no arguments.

Who's arguing? I was going to ask anyway. You just beat me to it. She smiled hesitantly.

Jackie, I have to ask you something and I don't want you to get upset again. Do you know if he used protection?

Oh My God Tammy, I didn't even think about it. I don't think he did. He was trying to kiss my and when I bit him he just unzipped his pants and well you know. I'm going to guess not; unless he already had it on in his jeans. What am I going to do? I don't want to be pregnant by him. She started crying again.

Tammy, are you ok in there? I thought I heard you crying. Can I come in Honey?

Tammy pointed toward her bathroom and Jackie ran into the bathroom and quietly shut the door. When she was sure Jackie was out of sight she opened the door.

It's ok Mom. Jackie just came over and asked to stay here for the weekend. She is home alone and thought she heard something so she ran over here. She was just upset and scared. I told her she could stay and she's getting ready to take a shower. It is ok if she stays isn't it Mom? She's all alone over there and she's scared.

It's fine Honey. I love Jackie too. Just tell her if she's hungry to come on in to the kitchen and get something. She can make herself at home. She's here almost as much as her house so she knows where everything is. You two don't stay up too late ok.

Ok Mom Thanks. I'll go get her something to eat while she's in the shower. That way it'll be here when she gets out. We'll be quiet tonight and won't stay up late.

Yeah and I'll grow a beard tomorrow. Just try to keep it down enough that Dad and I can sleep. Good Night Baby. Her mother kissed her cheek and left laughing.

Tammy shut the door and ran to the bathroom door to check on Jackie.

Jackie, are you still in there? Mom said you can stay all weekend. Can I come in Honey? I'm worried about you.

Jackie opened the door and told her that she was going to soak in the tub for a while then would talk to her. I just need a little time alone to sort everything out.

Ok Honey. I'm going to go get you a sandwich and chips. Do you want anything else?

I need a drink. My mouth it so dry, I think it's from all the crying. Do you have any Dr. Pepper?

I'll check. Don't stay in there too long. If you leave the door unlocked, I'll bring your Dr. Pepper in then leave you alone for a while ok.

Ok, thanks Tammy. You are the best friend a girl could ask for. I'll get the bath started and see you in a little bit.

Tammy helped her cope with the situation. They went to the Big City the next weekend and got a pregnancy test then went to a gas station to take it. They did that every other day for the next month and they all showed that she wasn't pregnant.

She secretly still took a test every week for the next four months just to be sure. After she told Tammy what she had been doing, Tammy convinced her that she was going to be ok. She also convinced her after six months to tell her parents what happened. Just as Jackie said, they were furious with her for lying to them and spreading lies about a family friend. Tammy tried to tell them that she saw the handprints on Jackie's cheeks but they wouldn't listen.

They demanded that Jackie apologize to James for spreading lies about him and when she adamantly refused they told her that she could just stay away until she decided to do the right thing.

They went to Tammy's parents and told them that Jackie's parents kicked her out. Tammy asked if Jackie could live with them until her parents let her come back home. They knew that would never happen but Tammy's parents didn't. They said she was more than welcome in their home. They felt bad for Jackie and tried to make her feel at home. After about a year they figured out that Jackie would be living with them until she graduated from high school. By that time she was calling them Momma Rachel and Papa Bob and thought of them as her parents too.

She heard Tammy and her parents talking about Joe a lot in those two years and was able to know how he was doing. She missed him stopping by. He had gone into the Marines right after he graduated. He was two years older than she was so he had been in the Marines for two years by the time she graduated and she hoped he would be coming home but Tammy got a letter from him congratulating both of them on graduating and said that he signed up for another four years. He said he would get home to see all of them as soon as he could.

He only made it home once more before she moved out and into the apartment above the Boutique she had opened with an inheritance from her grandmother. She didn't see much of him when he was on leave because he was always out with his friends.

When she heard that he was MIA, she was terrified for him. She prayed all the time that God would just bring him home alive. It didn't matter if he was injured, she would still love him. If he needed help she would be there to care for him even if he could never love her. She just wanted to be there for him.

When he did come home, he was quieter than he was when he left. He was always quiet but now he only talked when someone talked to him. She was at the club most nights and watched him. He didn't seem to notice anyone. He worked the bar at the club and spoke to the customers but never smiled.

    Chapter 1

Trying To Pull Joe Out Of His Shell

One night she was watching Joe and decided to talk to him. She went to the bar and sat on a barstool to wait for him to come over to take her order.

Hey Jackie, What can I get for you? he asked without much enthusiasm.

She put on her biggest smile. Hi Joe, I just wanted to come over and say that its nice having you home again. How are you doing?

I'm fine Jackie. How are you?

I'm good. I opened my own boutique across the square. I love working with the women in town to help them find their inner beauty. We missed you while you were gone.

"Yeah it was a long time. I'm glad to finally be home again. Did you need a drink? I'd give you one on the house if you want something."

That's sweet of you Joe. I'd like something with a peach flavor. What do you have?

I have a fuzzy screw that has peach juice and vodka. Do you think you'd like that? The vodka is easier on little ones like you. He half smiled at her.

Ok Joe. Let me try that. I don't usually drink much; nothing real hard anyway; mostly a beer or two.

I think you'll like this. It'll sneak up on you; so drink it slowly ok. I don't want to have to carry you home because I got you drunk.

Don't worry about that. I just live above the boutique so I could crawl home and be ok. She giggled at him. He half smiled again.

You're funny Little One. So you live above your business just like the rest of us?

Yeah it's more convenient that way. I get up and go to work without having to get out in the weather. I hate going out in the snow and ice.

Yeah I remember how you used to make me give you a piggyback ride to school when we were in grade school. I'd have thought you would've outgrown that by now.

Nope I still hate getting my feet wet or cold. That's why I love being right there for work. You were the best piggyback ride ever though. My feet were always dry and warm when we got to school and you were so much taller than I was so I could see everything from up there. You were a good sport Joe.

Yeah as I remember it; I didn't have much of a choice back then. If I didn't do it Aunt Rachel would get on to me. It wasn't bad though. You didn't weigh more than an ant. You don't look like you weigh more than you did then. He actually smiled.

Hey that's not nice Mister. I have you know I have grown a full foot since then. She said with a smile.

A whole foot since fourth grade, that's amazing Short Stuff. I'm impressed. He chuckled.

I was talking about grade school; like sixth grade Joseph Carter. She said with a frown then laughed.

Hey guys what's so funny over here. I saw you too laughing and felt left out. It's good to see you smile again Joey.

Yeah well Joey is teasing me about the fact that I'm vertically challenged. Jackie told her with a pout.

That did the trick he laughed out loud. That's a good one Short Stuff. Vertically challenged, I like that.

She smiled at him and looked at Tammy. When will I ever get rid of that nickname Joey stuck me with?

I don't know. When will you two stop calling me Joey? I haven't been called that except by you two since elementary school.

Let's make a deal then. I'll stop calling you Joey and you stop calling me Short Stuff. Do we have a deal?

You got it Little One. No more Short Stuff for you and no more Joey for me, sounds like a deal.

Joe that's not fair. I want you to stop calling me Little One too. You know I hate how short I am.

Nope sorry, but Little One stays. It suits you anyway. You're a cute Little Baby Doll.

Oh that is so not fair. I will get you for that. I am not a baby doll. I am a grown woman and you well know it.

No I don't think I do. You still look like that kid that asked me to dance with her while looking at the floor. Yep you're just my Baby Doll still.

She growled and asked Tammy if she could sing a song. I just feel like singing tonight. Will the band let me sing with them?

I don't know Jackie. They are kind of grouchy when I ask and I'm there boss. I am interviewing for another band tomorrow because I love singing here and these guys hate to share the stage. You can sing while they are on break if you can find a song on the karaoke machine that you like.

Ok I know what I want to sing and I know you have it so I'm happy with that. Joe you had better pay attention because this one's for you Buster. She then walked off and went back to the table she and Tammy had occupied before she went to talk to Joe.

Joe, why do you have to antagonize her so much? I think she has a crush on you and you hurt her feelings when you make fun of her size. You are the one that used to defend her and now you're bullying her. What's up with that?

I didn't mean to hurt her feelings. I was just teasing her. I haven't talked to a female in a long time so maybe that's what's wrong with me. I'll apologize when she's done with her song.

Ok she's just had a rough time in life and it would be nice if she knew she had you to have her back like you used to.

I got it Tammy Lynn. I will apologize. I need to help the customers. I'll talk to her after she is done singing. So let up ok.

Ok I'm sorry. I have just been her protector since the summer after you left. I didn't mean to be so hard on you. Will you forgive me Joey?

Yes Tammy Lynn. Now go talk to her and try to cheer her up so I won't feel like a total heel.

She smiled and left to go talk to Jackie. When the band took their break, Tammy helped her set up the karaoke machine. She went to the mic and told everyone that Miss Jackie had a song she wants to sing and dedicate it to our very own Bartender Joey.

Jackie took the mic and thanked the customers for allowing her to sing one song for Joe. She then sang 'I Am Woman' by Helen Reddy. Then she thanked the customers for their applause then went to her seat where Tammy gave her a high-five.

Oh that was good Jackie. I love the way you did that. I will have to remember that when I want to put someone in their place.

Thanks Tammy. I'm just tired of everyone thinking I'm still a school girl. I'm Twenty-four for crying out loud. Can't people treat me like a woman once in a while?

Easy Girl, I agree with you ok. Try to calm down and we will just have fun tonight. We'll forget all about Joe and we will dance with as many men as we can find. What do you think?

I like it. But I'm warning you; if they start in on how small I am I'm leaving. I've had enough.

I liked your song Miss Jackie and I brought you another drink…it's on me. I'm sorry I upset you. It was not my intention to upset you. Will you forgive me please if I promise not to tease you about your size?

Thank you Joe. Yes I always forgive remember. I think I'm too fast to forgive but that's me Miss Easy. Oh no, I didn't mean that. Oh God just shoot me now.

Joe chuckled. It's ok Honey; we both knew what you meant. I know you aren't easy ok. Now take your drink.

She took it and started to down it when Joe put a hand on hers. Remember what I told you. I know you're small but I still don't want to have to carry you across the square. Drink it slowly. I guess I picked the right drink. You seem to like it. Well I am sorry for hurting your feelings. I need to get back to the bar. Let me know if you need another.

Thanks Joey. I appreciate you taking care of us. Tammy said as he left.

Joe can be so sweet when he wants to. I wish he were like that all the time, like he used to be. Did you ever find out what happened to him while he was MIA?

"No I didn't ask. He was so quiet and hard to approach that I didn't want to set him back by asking him to talk about it. It must have been pretty bad to make that much of a change in him. I don't want to think about it. What did he give you? It smells like peaches.

It's a Fuzzy Screw. I believe it's a screwdriver with peach juice instead of orange juice. It's really good. I think it is my favorite drink now.

Maybe Joe put his finger in it to sweeten it. Tammy laughed. You did say he was sweet.

Ugg that was bad. Surely you can do better than that.

Yeah I can. You are still hung up on Joe aren't you? You don't have to say anything. Your blush says it all. Why don't you make a move on him?

Tammy, you know I can't. Remember what happened when that guy I was dating last year tried to touch me? I freaked out so bad he wanted to drop me in the country where we went to park. I can't get past the things that happened to me so I won't date anymore. He's fun to talk to and tease a little but no. I can't lead him on Tammy. It wouldn't be fair.

Jackie, you've known him a long time; most of your life. He would understand and take things slowly. I know you want him Honey. I see it the way your eyes light up when he's near. He might be able to help you get past those things.

No Tammy. I could never tell him what happened to me. I would die of embarrassment. Please tell me you'll still keep my secret.

I already promised to keep your secret until the day I die. How much more do you need? She smiled.

I'm sorry. I just can't think about anyone knowing and especially Joe. I can just imagine what he would think of me then.

He would not think any less of you Honey. You have to know that. You're like family to both of us.

Great that's just what I wanted to hear right now. I want him to be my family for real Tammy and that will never happen so let me move on ok.

Tammy was shocked that Jackie really said it out loud. She'd suspected it for years and always shared her letters from Joe with Jackie because she knew Jackie cared about him. She just didn't know how much.

She had to think of some way to help Jackie and Joe get together. Jackie had helped by tending bar for her before Joe got back home so maybe she could ask her to help Joe some night. They would be put together all evening and have to talk to each other. She decided that she would have to work on something to get the two of them together. They were two broken souls and she thought that together they could both mend their souls and maybe even become one.

At that thought she looked to the end of the bar and noticed John talking to Joe but glancing back at her every once in a while. It bothered her that he thought she couldn't take care of herself. She had been in love with him since she was fourteen and they had a very rare but amazing love until he came home from college. Things just went all wrong. She wanted him back but couldn't let herself even think about it until he trusted her to be able to handle the rowdies that sometimes came into the club. She sighed and turned back to Jackie.

Yeah I'm still here. Why don't you just put both of you out of your misery and talk to him?

I can't Jackie. You know that and you know why. It's his move now. You saw the way he acted on my birthday. He left me on the dance floor and just walked out. All because of some guys causing trouble.

Tammy, you told me about that conversation, or don't you remember? It may have happened because they started something but the reason he left was because you didn't trust him enough to tell him about them. You need to trust him as much as he needs to trust you. You two are perfect for each other if you'd just get out of your own way; and I'm talking about both of you. I love you but you are stubborn.

I know but I can't be with someone who doesn't trust me or I can't trust to stay calm when something like that happens.

So go tell him that. Jeez, Tammy you two have been in love forever. I remember when we were teenagers and you couldn't talk about anything without bringing up his name. You lived for him then. What happened to cause you guys to give that up? I'd give anything to have a man treat me like John treats you. He cares and isn't afraid to show it.

I know Jackie ok. Now let's talk about something else or I'm going to start crying right here. I think I'll go sing a song for John. I'll be right back.

She went to the mic and told her customers that she would like to sing a song for them too if they'd indulge her. She sang 'Tonight I Wanna Cry' by Keith Urban. The band leader frowned at her because it was time for them to start their next set.

When she came back Jackie hugged her and said it was time to get another drink and cheer up. Tammy gave her a half smile and sneaked a peak at John as he hung his head looking into his beer.

They talked about happy times and all the fun they had when Jackie lived with her and just enjoyed the rest of the night.

    Chapter 2

    A Birthday to Remember

Cassie came into the 'Unique Boutique' for her birthday gift from Jackie. Jackie had picked out an outfit for her birthday gift but didn't give it to her right away. She gave her an outfit that she knew Cassie would hate just so she'd accept the one she really wanted to give her.

"Tell me again why I can't just wear my jeans and t-shirt tonight. It is my birthday after all. Shouldn't I be allowed to be comfortable on my birthday? Cassie asked. Besides I'm just going for one drink then leaving. I don't see what all the fuss is about." Cassie stated again for the third time since coming into the boutique.

Oh no, you aren't leaving until you have some fun. We've discussed this already and you are not leaving until at least midnight Cinderella. Tammy said she would tie you to the bar if she had to but you are getting a night out for some fun and maybe a little lovin'. Now try these on and no complaining. Jackie opened the door holding skinny jeans and a denim jacket that she handed to Cassie.

Geez Jackie, could you pick out a pair of jeans that were any tighter. I'm not sure you can see my ass dimples in these.

Jackie threw back her head and laughed then put her arm around Cassie and said, "They look great. You look amazing! I'm so jealous. You have all the curves in all the right places. That outfit just shows them all off to perfection. No they aren't your regular jeans and baggie t-shirt but that's a good thing girl. Just accept you're Hot and flaunt it for one night. Come on Tammy is waiting for us and we have some celebrating to do."

Cassie was gorgeous. She was five foot seven with long wavy black hair and stunning brown eyes. She had long legs and a lot of curves but the one thing she hated most was the size of her very big breasts. When they walked into 'The Boot Heel' Tammy was waiting for them. It's about time you two got here! I was just getting ready to go find you. We have some serious partying to do. WOW! Cassie you look great. I hate to admit it but Jackie you did good. Tammy hollered from behind the bar as soon as they walked in the door.

Thanks Tammy. I just feel uncomfortable in these clothes. They are too tight and I can't even close this jacket all the way. The girls could make an unexpected appearance at any time; if I make one wrong move. Cassie said as she tried to close the jacket over her ample cleavage.

Tammy said, If you have it flaunt it. Then she told her to lighten up and have fun. They had a few drinks. They talked about Cassie's twin sister that had been in Tennessee for the last five years. Cassie said she felt something wasn't right with Carrie when she talked to her that morning

Tammy and Jackie looked at each other then looked back at Cassie. "Cassie I don't know what to say but if you have a feeling that something is off with Carrie; you have to trust your twin connection." Tammy told her.

They danced and laughed together before finding to a table and sat down to listened to the music and visited. Cassie finally gave in for now and decided to do just what Tammy said: lighten up and have fun.

Tammy and Jackie danced with a couple of men. They were having fun. When they were ready to go back to their table and visit with Cassie, Charles, the man dancing with Jackie asked if he could buy them a drink to thank them for the dances. Before she thought about it, Jackie said that would be nice of him.

Both of the men just took a seat at their table. Jackie felt nervous because they asked if they could buy them a drink not sat with them. She didn't know how to get rid of them now that they were sitting at the girls' table.

After a while Cassie jumped up and pushed in her chair. Ladies, gentlemen it's been great fun but I have an early morning so I'm headed home. Thank you for a lovely birthday.

It's not midnight yet Cinderella. Jackie told Cassie.

You can't go yet. Tammy cried as she continued walking away.

I'll see you girls tomorrow; sometime in the afternoon I'm thinking. Cassie said with a wave as she hurried to the door.

Huh I wonder what tickled her tail feathers. Tammy said.

Charles was draped all over Jackie and Tammy could tell it was freaking her out. Hey Charles maybe you could give my girl some breathing room there. We probably should go to the ladies' room anyway so if you will excuse us gentlemen; it was interesting talking to you. Be seeing you around I'm sure. She started to get up until she felt the tingling that told her John was near.

John and a cute cowboy stepped up to the table and asked if everything was alright. Charles stood up and kind of puffed his chest out. Everything is just fine Officer. We were just having a good time until you two interrupted.

That would be Chief Wright as I'm sure you're aware. John said.

Jackie stood up and smiled at John with a pleading look. Chief Wright thank you for asking but things are good here. We were just going to dance weren't we Charles?

He wrapped one arm around Jackie, pulled her in close, and said, we were and I told you to call me Chuck Darlin'. Now if you boys will excuse us we have some dancin' to get to. Then he walked past John with a smug look on his face.

While Jackie danced with Chuck, she watched John and Tammy. They seemed to be arguing again and Tammy had just stomped off. John said something the other guy then he got up and left. John went to the bar and talked to Joe for a while and it looked like John has also upset Joe.

Joe went to the bandstand and took up the mic, turned it on and announced last call. He let everyone there know that the club was closing in fifteen minutes.

Tammy met him at the edge of the bandstand and said something to Joe. Joe caught her arm and stopped her. He talked to her and seemed to settle her down some then he kissed her on the forehead. She turned and went behind the bar to the stairs leading to her apartment. At the bottom of the stairs, she turned and looked at John. She just tipped her head at him and went upstairs.

Joe went to Jackie and asked if she would mind helping close up tonight since Tammy wasn't feeling well. She agreed quickly because Chuck was making her nervous and besides, it gave her a chance to be with Joe.

Sure, I'll be right there. Jackie turned to Charles and saw what looked like a very angry man before her. I'm sorry Charles but I have to help my friends. It was nice meeting you. Have a good night. She turned to walk away to go where Joe was standing a few feet away, when Charles grabbed her arm and said, I'll wait for you and walk you home.

OH that's sweet of you but I'm staying with Tammy tonight upstairs. So thank you again. Good night. She pulled her arm away from Charles and quickly went to Joe's side. Charles had really scared her. She didn't like men holding on to her and there was something about him that bothered her. She was glad Joe had asked for her help.

Thanks Joe, he was acting strange and making me uncomfortable but I couldn't get away from him.

They started making their way to the bar and Joe asked, How are you feeling, any dizziness?

No why do you ask? Did something happen?

We aren't sure but John and I suspect that someone may have put something in Tammy's drink tonight. She was acting strange and when I got her calmed down she admitted that she felt strange. That was all that she said.

So do you really need me to help or was it just an excuse to get me way from Charles?

He grinned at her. It was a little of both. If you would close down the bar, I will pick up the empties from the tables and shut down the kitchen. I really appreciate your help Jackie.

Why don't I pick up the empties and let you close down the bar? It's been a long time since I've done it and picking up empties doesn't take any knowledge of the bar.

It would also put you right back out there with Charles. You take care of the bar and if you don't remember something, I will help you when I get everything else done. I have faith in you. It's just like riding a bike. He grinned and gently pushed her behind the bar.

They worked together to shut things down and clean up. It was just after midnight when they finished. Jackie was tired but wanted to go check on Tammy before going home.

You did great Jackie. I knew you could do it. Thank you so much for your help. If you're ready to go I'd like to walk you home to make sure you get there safely.

I'd like that but I want to check on Tammy before I go if that's ok.

Of course it's ok. When you go home though, I will escort you. I don't want the boogieman getting my favorite helper. Now let's go check on Tammy.

He led her upstairs to Tammy's apartment. Jackie was secretly glad Joe insisted on walking her home for more than safety's sake. She had noticed lately he was joking more and teasing her more too. She loved spending time with him but it wasn't very often that she got him all to herself,

As they reached the door, they noticed that it wasn't closed all the way. Joe put his arm out and motioned for her to get behind him. He quietly pushed the door open and rushed in to the living room. Tammy lay crumpled on the floor. He knelt down beside her and checked her pulse then lifted her eyelids. She was unconscious but breathing. Joe pulled his cell phone from his pocket and speed dialed.

John I need you here now. He told John about Tammy and said they would meet out front. He listened to John then said, Ok we'll meet you. Please hurry.

He turned to Jackie. Honey I need you to get me the blanket off of Tammy's bed and bring it in here.

She ran to do as Joe asked and rushed back into the living room where Joe had Tammy in his arms.

He told her to wrap the blanket around both Tammy and his arm. I hate to ask you but could you get the bar keys out of my front pocket. If it makes you feel uncomfortable I can put her down.

Jackie didn't say a word as Joe turned his right hip to her. She stuck her hand in his pocket and pulled out the keys. It felt strange to reach into a man's pants pocket while he was wearing them. I got them let's go.

They raced down the stairs and waited just inside the door until John pulled up in his police cruiser. Jackie already had the door unlocked and just had to push it open for Joe. As he passed the door, she shut and locked it and jumped into the front seat with John.

John told them to take her vitals and he relayed the information as they raced to the hospital. There were doctors and nurses waiting outside when they pulled up to the emergency entrance. Joe and Jackie were at the desk answering questions when John came in and identified them as family and himself as the Chief of Police. He said he needed to talk to her as soon as she was awake. The nurse said she would let them know how Tammy was doing as she got the news; that the doctor would let him know when she was available to talk to him. She then told him they could just wait in the waiting room until then.

Jackie started crying and Joe stepped up and wrapped her in his arms. It's ok Honey; she is going to be ok now. I know this was hard on you and you've held up beautifully. Please hold it together a little longer for her and don't cry. It's killing me to see you upset like this. I'm sorry I put you in this situation.

Jackie looked at him and shook her head then wiped away her tears. After taking a deep breath she said, You didn't put me in this situation. Some asshole trying to get into Tammy panties did this and it pisses me off that men think that this kind of thing is ok. She could've died just because some ignorant ass wanted some action tonight. How can anyone want to be with someone like that when they're unconscious? That's just sick.

Joe looked at John. They both had shocked looks on their faces and started laughing. Joe hugged her again and kissed the top of her head. Sweetheart, I don't know how you go from crying to being pissed but please remind me to never piss you off. and laughed again.

John said That goes for me too. I've never heard language like that from you. It was a shock but the cutest thing I've ever seen. You are a spitfire when you get going aren't you? I hope you don't include us in your description if men; because I assure you that neither of us thinks that kind of behavior is acceptable.

Well someone almost killed my best friend so yeah I'm pissed and stop laughing. I will kick both your asses. John can you find out who did this or are they going to get away with this shit? She couldn't believe they could laugh at a time like this. Tammy was in the hospital and they didn't know who put her there.

I have to be honest with you. Whoever did this will probably never be caught.

    Chapter 3

    A Hospital Visit

Just then the nurse said that they could go back to see Tammy. When they walked in Tammy was sitting up in bed with her head in her hands.

Jackie rushed to her and gently hugged her. Oh Honey are you ok? We were so worried. What did the doctor say?

I love you Jackie but please be quiet. My head feels like it's about to explode. The doctor hasn't been in yet so I know as much as you do. We will just have to wait. I just need quiet and dark but it doesn't look like dark will be possible in here.

Just as she finished talking the overhead light went out. Both women gasped and John quietly chuckled.

John what are you doing here? I thought you'd already left the club by the time I went upstairs.

It appears that I'm teaching you lovely ladies what light switches are for. I got an emergency call and brought you and your entourage here.

Smart ass, I can't fight with you right now. So don't start with me.

Jackie thought it was funny but she knew better than to laugh with the mood Tammy was in right then. She turned to John, smiled and winked.

John and Joe chuckled together. Boy you're a real popular guy tonight. You've got two women wanting to kick your ass and one thinking you're a pompous ass and we've only been here about an hour. Way to go Ace. Joe said still chuckling,

Don't be a smart ass Joey; you're the one that called him I'm sure, so you might just get an ass whoopin' when I feel better too. So I wouldn't laugh it up too much.

That got them both laughing quietly. At least we know her mouth is back to normal. John said.

A very handsome doctor came in before she could comment.

Well Miss Carter I'm not sure what you had tonight besides some alcohol but something caused an allergic reaction. Can you tell me want you had to eat and drink and what you're allergic to?

I just had my regular dinner then drank some rum and Coke which is my regular drink. I'm allergic to peanuts and penicillin but other than that I don't know what to tell you.

He told her they had pumped her stomach and would have the preliminary results in an hour or less. Can I get you something while you wait? Your throat will be sore so no juice or rum and Coke for now. He said with a chuckle.

Everyone's a comedian tonight. I have a headache can I get something for that?

He said he didn't want to give her meds right now. Then he offered her a cold cloth and darkness. It might help if your friends left or at least were very quiet.

Like that's going to happen. The cool cloth would be nice and they can stay. Tammy said with a dramatic sigh.

I'll get the nurse to bring you the cloth and go see if I can rush your labs. I'll be back as soon as I get some results. Try to relax and that should help with the headache too. and with that he left the room.

A lot of help he is. Where did he get his license in a Cracker Jacks box? God, I hate hospitals. Let me tell you there will definitely be another man with an ass whoopin' coming if he tries to make me stay. I have a business to run and I'm not staying in here one minute more than I have to.

Ok Sweet Pea, Let's just see what he says before we threaten bodily harm to the poor man. You are in rare form tonight I must say, kind of Feisty. I like it. John chuckled.

Just keep talking Chuckles and I'll show you my rare form.

John belly laughed at that one. Do you promise because I can talk all night for that kind of reward?

Oh good grief, just shut up. You're killing me with that deep laugh of yours. Give it a rest already. It isn't fair to spar with someone whose brain is incapacitated.

He said he'd behave but wanted her to tell him why Kyle and Charles were at her table.

Jackie and I had just danced with them and it seemed rude to not invite them to sit with us.

"Don't give me that. You dance with men all the time and don't ask them to sit with you. Try again Pumpkin.'

Jackie spoke up saying, Charles asked if he could buy us a drink and I accepted. The next thing we knew they were pulling chairs out and sitting down. She knew that Tammy wasn't going to tell him anything because she was getting more aggravated with him by the minute. Why was he pushing her now?

Now why would you not tell me that Tammy? Please just give me one straight answer. John pleaded.

Fine I'll tell you why. You're always saying that I can't handle myself or the men in the club. I didn't think they would stay. I thought they would have one drink with us then leave. I knew that you and Joe were watching me, so I saw no harm in letting them stay for one drink. I was wrong. Now are you happy?

Not by a long shot Baby, not by a long shot. I'll wait for you guys out in the waiting room. John turned and left that room. He looked more upset than he had earlier but Jackie had no idea what was going through his mind now.

Tammy watched John walk out. I'm sorry guys. I shouldn't have been so mean to him but it seems we just can't be in the same room without fighting.

Joe told her that John loved her and was only joking with her. He said that John was hurting just like she was and she was the only one that could fix it. Then they talked about other things.

The doctor finally came in. Is the headache better? he asked and at her slight nod he continued. On a scale of one to ten where is your level of pain right now?

The pain in my head is about a three; the pain in my ass, which just walked out, is about a twelve. She said with a small smile.

He chuckled. I can take care of the pain in the head but you are going to have to take care of your own ass this time. He told her.

She giggled. I'll try but its dark up there and believe me I know because I have my head up my ass most of the time.

He laughed and said, I can't do anything about that either. Sorry. Now the preliminary test results came back with peanut oil in its raw form and what is known on the street as ecstasy. If I had to guess I'd say that someone dissolved the ecstasy in a small amount of peanut oil so you wouldn't notice it before it dissolved in your drink. I'm going to let you go home but I want you to rest today and as much as possible tonight. I understand that you work nights. What do you do?

I own 'The Boot Heel' in our small town. It's a dance club. That's where I was last night.

That's a bar right? Can you take a day or two off? I'd like to make sure that your system is completely flushed before starting a full work schedule again.

Ok first, I'm going to let the 'bar remark go this time and just so you know, that's very rare. She hated it when people called her club a bar. You did save my life so I guess I owe you one. My debt has just been paid." She explained the difference between a bar and her club and told him he should come check it out. She offered to buy his first drink.

Ok I think they forgot that in my college education. Thank you for enlightening me. I didn't mean to upset you but the fact remains, that that is the most likely place for you to have ingested this little mixture. I can be a hard ass, as I'm sure you'd put it, and order you to stay for two more days. He said with a grin like he'd won something.

"You're right you could. I think they probably did cover patients' rights though in your college education, which includes the right to go against doctors' orders. I will leave here today Doctor... What is your name anyway? I can't see your tiny name tag from here."

My name is Daniel Brown. I know about patients' rights and will not even try to force the issue. I did think you were a smart woman though.

I'm Smart enough to get out of here Doctor Dan. Now let me go please.

He said he didn't know if he wanted to release her because he was having too much fun with her. She was the first woman that could give back everything he dished out I will sign your release papers if you will join me in that drink you promised me. I have no idea when I'll be there but I will be there. Do we have a deal? he stuck out his hand for a shake.

She shook his hand with a triumphant grin. Thank you Danny and I will have that drink with you but don't wait too long. Apparently my smart mouth is very attractive. She said as she left the room. She stopped and turned to wink at him before leaving. Just so you know, I think you're very handsome but I'm not interested in anything more than friendship. I gave my heart away a long time ago.

Jackie and Joe stood staring, too stunned to move. She had actually told him that she loved John in a way. Maybe there was hope for them after all. Finally! Joe laughed and looked at Dr. Brown. Thank you Doctor. We really appreciate your help.

They shook hands; then Joe and Jackie left the room. Joe do you think they will ever get their differences settled? I'd like to see them together again.

I don't know Honey but I hope so. This drama is hard to watch. I feel bad for both of them. Love shouldn't hurt that much.

They found Tammy at the nurses' desk signing papers and getting aftercare instructions. John was across the room sitting staring off into space. Joe went to talk to him. He said something then put his hand on John's shoulder and gently squeezed. He watched as the girls headed for the exit. Let's get her home. I believe they're done and she may take your patrol car with the mood she's in right now. They chuckled and followed the women out.

She is feisty isn't she? That's one of the things I love about her. She doesn't take anything without giving it right back. Please try to keep her safe. She holds my heart in her hands. I will work my way back into her heart if it's the last thing I do.

I believe you will. Joe told him then stopped him from getting into the
