It was ridiculous.
Jack scowled as he made his way through the forest, the mid-summer sun beating down on his face with more force than he'd like. It was scorching hot, and even for someone in as good a shape as he was, the affect was not lost. Wiping the sweat from his brow, he continued to curse the man who was responsible for his being out rather than in his air conditioned home.
Jack had received a call from his pack's adviser, Chris Lightfoot, saying he had urgent business that needed Jack's attention at his shop at the edge of the forest. Why the man needed him, he had no clue, but as alpha he had no choice but to go see what it was. As advisor to the pack, tapped in to the land, Chris felt things that even Jack wasn't couldn't comprehend. If it was as important as Chris said, then he needed to hurry and take care of it as soon as possible.
After alerting his beta, Adrian, that he was heading out, he had begun the long trek through the woods to Chris's shop. He would have taken his car, but unfortunately the back tire was flat and the pack member he had sent out to get a replacement had not returned yet. Adrian had offered his car, but Jack had refused. The responsibilities of being an alpha to a pack of werewolves was stressful work, and he figured he could use the alone time.
Shielding his eyes from the sunlight, he regretted not taking Adrian's car. He had told him he could use the walk because of the stress of his duties, but that was only part of it.
Things had been awkward between him and his beta ever since the last full moon. Jack was in the prime of his life, ready to take a mate, and Adrian had been by his side for as long as he could remember, the scent of desire clear in the air. Everyone had been expecting Jack to choose Adrian as his mate, but he'd shocked everyone by denying Adrian's request. Jack wasn't ready to accept a mate yet, and it caused tension throughout his pack – especially with his beta.
It's wasn't that Jack was put off by the thought of mating with another male. Far from it—if anything, he preferred it. The hard curve of muscle under skin, broad shoulders to grip, a hard cock, and a tight hole… no, that wasn’t it.
Asking an alpha for their hand in partnership in their society was much more significant than it was in the human world. It was not a question to take lightly. It was a request to be bonded in love until the day you died. And no matter how solid his beta was in handling ancillary pack duties, Jack simply didn't feel that way about him.
A certain amount of power came with being mated to the alpha of the pack, and during his tenure as alpha he had received many of those kinds of offers; so it was expected for him to deny them all. But when Adrian's request went public, everyone was certain he'd accept. The second he said no, everyone went into shock-- no one more than Adrian.
Jack couldn't take the awkward glances and lingering silences between them anymore, so he jumped at the chance to be alone like this. But what he hadn't foreseen was this ridiculous heat.
This walk is a double-edged sword, Jack thought bitterly.
After another few minutes of walking, he caught sight of Chris's shop. He had set up off the main trail leading away from the city, attracting hitch-hikers and hunters alike. He sold hiking supplies: bullets, hides, and archery accessories. People thought he was the hunter's best friend, when in reality he was Jack's scout. Whenever hunters came into his shop announcing they were camping in the woods for the weekend, Chris would send a text to Jack to alert him of their presence. He would close off the pack's compound; make sure nobody could get out or in. The last thing they needed was a group of hunters discovering their existence.
Chris was a huge asset to Jack, not only as his scout but his spiritual advisor. He had been around the proverbial supernatural block, and whenever Jack worried that his decisions weren't up to snuff, he would get in contact and get some eccentric yet wise advice on how to handle the situation. Chris had saved his ass many times, and it was because of this that he left his air conditioned home so quickly to see what emergency
he had for his.
Jack!
Chris greeted him as he entered, never one to pay his the proper respect he deserved. Most others called him 'alpha', but Chris never saw fit to call him by his honorific. If Jack was being honest, it was slightly refreshing.
Jack closed the door behind himself, listening to the jingling of the bells that signalled his arrival. He took a moment to enjoy the delicious chill of the shop's air conditioning, sighing, then approached the counter where Chris sat fanning himself.
What is so important that I had to 'come see you immediately'?
Jack scowled, crossing his arms over his broad, scarred chest. It's a hundred degrees out, and you know my car is out of commission.
Yes, I am aware.
Chris snapped shut his fan, standing from his seat behind the counter and walking to his side. I assure you that I wouldn't request your presence without good reason.
Then what is it?
Jack asked, genuinely curious. Are there hunters in the area?
No, nothing of that sort,
Chris said. There's somebody I would like you to meet. Come with me!
he sang.
He gave Jack a wide grin, tossing aside the curtains leading into the back room with a flourish and disappearing behind them.
Jack shook his head. As odd as the man was, he never steered him wrong.
Following behind Chris, he entered the back of the shop and glanced around the small kitchen area that bridged the front of the shop and the storage room in the far back. Chris opened the small shop fridge and pulled out a beer, handing it to Jack.
Take a seat, I'll just go get him,
Chris said, opening the storage room door.
Jack raised a brow. Get who?
Me,
a new voice said.
Jack looked up in surprise as someone appeared in the threshold of the back room.
He was maybe around twenty-five or so, tall and lean, his short dark hair slightly messy from the heat. He was dressed in a t-shirt and jeans, the very picture of a city boy visiting the woods, but there was no mistaking the strength to his body, the musculature of his arms.
