Prologue
A family is like a forest - each tree has its own place
~Ghanaian proverb.
Ghana is a colorful land of many interesting and wonderful beliefs. For those growing up in Ghana, storytelling is a way of life. As children we would sit around a bonfire as stories were woven into our hearts.
The Asantes of Ghana are an ethnic group who have a rich history of royalty and symbolism. One of the ways to better understand a people is through their symbols.
The Adinkra symbols you will find throughout the book also tell a story of the beliefs of the Asante people. It is a culture now known all over the world.
Our stories hold within them a great morality of courage, respect for that which is sacred and mysterious, honor, kindness, hospitality, and gratitude.
The colorful Kente cloth is a beautiful combination of rich colors hand woven with the finest materials of silk and cotton. The rich color combinations of gold, green, purple, and red are as rich and diverse as the people of Ghana. This cloth of Ghana once worn by royalty is now worn by all in Ghana on special occasions like weddings.
Gold represents, royalty, prosperity, and glory.
White represents purity and victory.
Green represents newness, fertility, and vitality.
