Spirit of Love - Jennifer K Michaels

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

She was finally starting to feeling sick. Three days into this trip and the sickness was now starting to set in. Not while they had been in Prague, beautiful, sunny Prague filled with the wonders of classical Europe, but in cold, wet Romania. Probably far from anywhere that would accept her travelers insurance. Here in cold, wet Romania they would probably take her to a doctor whose other patients would include a horse and several Igor or Frankenstein’s monster. Definitely not the type of doctor to take travelers insurance.

And if they did then they’d probably try to bleed me or stick leeches on me.

Elise keen sat miserably wrapped in her thick blanket, eyes closed in fake sleep, as the train she was on barreled through the mountain valleys of Romania. The only things going through her mind was the warm fireplace in their hotel in Prague, her new ex-boyfriend back home, and the bartender at the tiny restaurant they had eaten in before boarding the train. He had been beautiful. To American post-grads like Elise and her friends he had seemed impossibly exotic with his olive complexion, muscular frame and black wavy hair. His smile had dazzled them while he poured the dark European beers that for the most part remained untouched in their hands. They only had eyes for him. Unfortunately he only had eyes for a group of loud sorority girls visiting from some small Christian college in the South. So much for that.

    Thinking about Javier, eh?

Elise’s eyes popped open. Her friend Carrie had woken up and was nudging her from across the sleeper cart aisle with her foot. Carrie had that mischievous smile on her face and her green eyes were lit up. Her smile could make men swoon from 50 feet away and she was never afraid to use it. She was the yin to Elise’s yang. Elise was a slim girl with a body full of awkward, bony angles that she did her best to cover up. Her hair was a mousy brown color that hung past her shoulders. Secretly, she wished she had the courage to color it something more adventurous, but had always opted against it when it came time to decide. Chestnut brown eyes and a slim, elfin face rounded out her body. Nothing special was how she often bitterly described it, much to the dismay of her friends.

Then there was Carrie; impossibly beautiful Carrie, who had never carried a book to class since the 7th grade. Instead men had fought for the right to tote her baggage across campus just to get a one of her trademark smiles thrown his way. Curvy and yet still thin, she seemed to be the perfect woman with her staggering green eyes and loud blonde hair cut in the latest fashion. How they could be friends was still a mystery to Elise, but somehow these two wildly different girls had sat down at the same lunch table one day and became best friends within minutes. Neither was too sure why this had happened considering their yen and yang personality, but by the time Wendy had joined their clique the two were essentially inseparable.

So I’ll take that as a yes then? Carrie asked.

No just wondering whose bright idea this was to leave Prague and venture off into Vampire country, Elise shot back bitterly. "You realize that real vampires
