AUTHOR'S NOTE
ONE
UMAR sheathed his dagger and thought of where to bury the body. He was in a farm outside of Daura. The brown crops didn’t offer enough cover. If he wanted to bury her, he would have to carry the body inside the forest. Too much work.
He took a look at the blood on her shoulder and shook his head. Better to leave her here. Nobody would trace the corpse to him.
He lifted the hood above his head and walked out of the farm. He sighted some green insects jumping from plant to plant. He stopped. This was strange. These insects never came out in the day. Umar realized he was wasting too much time and continued his journey.
He did not relax until he had gotten into Daura. Even so, he avoided the main streets, passing the Beggars’ Quarters and a bush path that led to the stone building where junior members of the Iqraqi stayed.
Good afternoon, Jezreel,
Umar said to the soldier at the gate.
Jezreel nodded. You’ve joined those wearing these imported dresses. I guess the lack of welfare is making you soft.
Umar laughed and entered the compound. I am tired of uniforms.
Have you joined the afternoon hunters?
Umar frowned. What do you mean?
Blood on your boots.
Umar examined himself and found traces of blood on his boots. His brain went into motion even as he realized he was in trouble.
I helped in the slaughter of a kalram.
Jezreel raised eyebrows. Since when? You don’t eat kalrams.
‘Does that mean I can’t help in the slaughter?" Umar asked, walking away. As he entered the passageway of the building, he wondered what to do. Very soon, the body would be found. Would Jezreel point fingers at him? After some time, Umar convinced himself he was safe.
He got to his door. He unsheathed his dagger. He pushed a button on the door with the dagger and the door swung open. Umar entered the room and slammed the door.
His insides ached. He went towards a wardrobe on the wall to grab a meal.
I’ve been waiting for you.
Umar turned at once towards the source of the voice. There were two things about the intruder that caused Umar to fear. First, the man was a wizard. Gold medals adorned the traditional black robes. The man was also white skinned and it was only a few years ago that Balians stopped killing and imprisoning white skinned people. So anyone who had the effrontery to enter Bali had to be feared.
What do you want?
You want to kill me?
the wizard said, pointing at Umar’s dagger. Like you’ve been doing to those pathetic souls?
Sweat flooded Umar’s face. The wizard knew.
My name is Merkel,
the wizard said. Sheath your dagger. I am here to help you.
Umar nodded. He needed help but he knew that was not why this wizard was here.
You can channel this disease of yours into more profitable ventures.
What are you talking about?
Merkel waved his hand. Blue light emanated from his hand and covered the room for a brief moment.
To protect us from eavesdropping.
What do you want?
Umar asked, sheathing his dagger.
You know Princess Raheemah needs a husband.
Umar raised eyebrows. Yes?
Merkel smiled. I think you could be the husband. You are man enough, aren’t you?

Daanyal was on top of the kayan tree watching the two women from the convent. He had been following them for three days and he had not thought they were anything but religious women. Until now.
One of them had blonde hair. She brought out a knife from inside her hair. Daanyal wondered what she was going to do. The other woman entered into the adobe hut. Daanyal had been unable to enter the hut yesterday night. They were hiding something in there, he was sure.
A minute later, the woman came out of the hut, dragging a dead woman across the ground. Daanyal bit his lips. He recognized the corpse was Nerisse. Hours after her suicide was discovered, her body was missing. Daanyal forced himself to contain the excitement. He tried to unsheathe his sword as silently as possible.
The women were saying something. He could not hear them but even if he did, he would not understand. Still, he watched on.
The blonde haired woman bent and dipped the knife into Nerisse’s mouth, forcing it wide open. Daanyal closed his eyes in horror. When he opened them, he saw the woman holding a long, slimy thing. It took several seconds before Daanyal realized it was a tongue.
Daanyal prepared to capture the women. He shook his head in disgust. So even women had evil hearts! Daanyal shook his head again. These were women who claimed to dedicate themselves to the worship of Barthus. Daanyal thought of the punishment he would give them before handing them to his master.
The blonde haired woman wrapped the tongue in a bunch of white leaves. The other one dragged Nerisse inside the hut.
Daanyal was waiting for the perfect opportunity to attack and make cuts that would immobilize them. He began to move down the tree. With his experience, he was able to make it to the ground without making any noise. He squatted in the bush and watched as the other woman came out of the hut.
They talked for some time and began to walk towards the bush. Did they know he was here? Daanyal did not think so but he gripped the sword tighter. He was more than capable of handling two women. He was a trained swordsman of the Balian Kingdom. Daanyal felt confident.
Come out,
the blonde shouted.
