About this ebook

What's the secret to selling more indie and self-published books on the Kindle platform?

It all starts with a great book - but after that, success hinges on your ability to effectively promote what you've written. For a few authors, promotion is easy. For most, it's not only a labyrinth of confusing pathways, it's also a huge time-suck.

In Sell More Books: 55 Free Indie Promos for Authors That Work, you'll learn how to focus on the promotional methods that fit both your personality and your genre.

Boost Your Book Sales to New Levels

If you're like a lot of authors, your book is getting good reviews but only selling a copy or two a day, if that. One of the reasons for static sales is the reality that competition between indie authors is high and getting higher. What makes one author more successful than another, given the fact that their books are similar in content and quality?

The ability to promote your book to the people who are desperate to read what you've written. For non-fiction authors this may mean creatively marketing to readers who want to know more about dog training, paleo diets, or extreme sports. For those who write novels, you have a whole world waiting for the next romance, mystery or thriller.

The good news is, there are dozens of ways to promote your books - in fact the authors had trouble sticking to only 55 - but the challenge is to find the ones that work for you and for your book. Sell More Books: 55 Free Promotions That Work is the answer.

Michelle Campbell-Scottt has been through a number of careers (advertising, public relations, teaching, training). She prefers the idea that this has brought a wealth of experience to her writing rather than the fact that she is a bit fickle. She wrote courses and articles for other people for many years before plucking up the courage to enter the publishing arena. She learned the necessary skills from Cathy Presland’s ‘Publish Your Book On Kindle’ course and published the first book under her own name in 2012.

MORE BOOKS BY MICHELLE CAMPBELL SCOTT

    INTRODUCTION TO THE

    SECOND EDITION

These days, the easy part of being an author is writing a book. A few years ago we worried about getting an agent or a publisher but today the big issue is platform and brand. Just the other day we heard a seminar leader comment that close to 80% of an author’s efforts are spent on rain-making[1]. For authors who don’t like the promo-game, that figure is daunting.

However, the great ‘Indie Revolution’ has made marketing a necessity – unless you’ve already created a street team of rabid fans.

We both write full-time, which means marketing our books is part of our everyday life. Over the years, we’ve spent a tremendous amount of time learning best practices, comparing notes with colleagues, and testing our own theories. This helped us to discover – and keep up-to-date - with the best ways for writers of all genres to sell more of their books.

While not a complete list, the book you’re now reading contains the 55 best book marketing techniques that we know first-hand are proven to work. We’ve tried them all but what we can tell you with absolute certainty is that not all of the 55 will work for every single book or every single author. Our personalities are different and yours is different from either of us. That’s why we grouped the strategies into five major categories – hopefully making it easier for you to find the promotional ideas that work for you and your book.

    The Big Five.

    The Rock Star.

    The Emily Dickinson.

    The Best Friend.

    The Wizard.

As we sat down to write the second edition of this book, we took into consideration all of the feedback early readers offered, then thought a lot about even more ways to help other authors promote their books.

A driving question for us was – what makes a person buy a book? We know why we buy books, but just for drill, we took an informal survey of friends and family, asking them that one question: What makes you buy a book?

The most common answers were – in the order of importance
