About this ebook

Brandon Jones is an only child and that’s his problem. Everyone else has a brother or sister and he wants one too. After he fails to convince his parents another child is just what they need, he takes matters into his own hands. With some ingenuity and the help of another addition at the next- door neighbor’s house, Brandon needs to take the new Baxter baby. Everything seems perfect until he realizes the consequences of what he’s done and the fact that he’s always going to the The One And Only.

In this lighthearted story, children will not only find a humorous read but one learn about sharing, facing the consequences of making made choices and the value of friendship when you’re growing up. This book was the debut novel for now multi published author Susan Palmquist and won the Loft’s Children’s Literature Award.

    Acknowledgements

My sincere appreciation to the Loft for offering The Children’s Literature Award so many years ago and for thinking The One and Only worthy of such an accolade. You gave me the confidence to think of myself as a ‘real’ author and got this whole writing thing started. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    The Problem

Let me introduce myself. My name is Brandon Jones. I’m twelve-years-old and attend Wakeville Junior High. I live with my parents Paul and Gillian. Yes, there’s just the three of us, and that’s where my story begins.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not, but the world is designed for families with at least two children. Kitchen and dining room tables come with four, not three, chairs. Special pre-packaged dinners provide four servings, not three. If you go shopping with your parents you meet other kids with their parents…plus their brothers and sisters. And in restaurants, we always have that one empty chair at the table. It always looks like something’s missing in our lives.

Are you starting to get the picture?

And people are so unfair to only children. We’re always labeled spoiled brats. I can assure you, we’re not. We can’t help it if our parents have one less person to spend their money on. And why don’t they ever say nasty things to our parents? After all, it’s their fault.

I’d been thinking about this problem for quite some time. I’d even spoken to my parents about it a few times, but never really confronted them. But then one day it happened.

Up until now, I hadn’t been alone in this only child syndrome. And although I’ve never liked the idea of being friendly with a girl, whether I liked it or not I did have something in common with Amy Peters. She, like me, gets everything she asks for. She, like me, thinks our world isn’t intended for families of three. And, just like me, she feels lonely most of the time. But on this particular day, something was about to change in Amy’s life and my friendship with her.

I walked toward the school playground and saw Amy sitting there, gazing into space. I knew there was something different about her as soon as I saw her that day.
