John and Barbara Fenn were born in Kokomo, Indiana and grew up just a few miles from each other. They attended the same kindergarten, went to many of the same neighborhood birthday parties growing up, and had mutual friends. Barb even attended John's confirmation in the Episcopal Church when they were twelve years old. They began dating as teenagers and were born again together and baptized with the Holy Spirit at age sixteen. Each attended Indiana University after graduating high school and were then married in 1978. In early 2002 John and Barb founded the Church Without Walls International of Tulsa (CWOWI), a house church network, emphasizing relationship-based Christianity. The seeds of CWOWI were planted in 1992 during a time of prayer. The Lord Jesus appeared to John in a visitation and shared some of what He would be doing in the future. Part of the Lord's plan was an exodus from many of the "para-church" organizations that were raised up after the Charismatic renewal of the 1960s and 70s. This would produce a movement of more "para-church" organizations, home prayer meetings, and also home-based churches. On November 4, 2001, during an evening church meeting in Edmonton, Alberta, Jesus appeared again to John. As both John and the host pastor fell to their knees, Jesus laid hands on John and told him to start a home church network "based on my Word and the things you've learned through the people I've brought across your path this year." The Lord said He wanted it to be called The Church Without Walls International. The next month, CWOWI began meeting in the Fenn home, and is growing and gaining affiliate house churches as relationships develop. Known for teaching with anointing and by revelation and flowing with the gifts of the spirit, his heart's desire is to make known the ways of the Father God. Church Without Walls International (CWOWI) is dedicated to making disciples of Jesus Christ through the establishment of a network of related house churches around the world.

    Introduction

I ended Pursuing the Seasons of God by writing about a visit to heaven I received one day while in prayer. I then wrote to be continued. Many people have written or talked to me saying, "Why did you leave me in heaven with a dog and a monkey and then say to be continued?"

Knowing the Ways of God is the follow up to Pursuing the Seasons of God, although you will not be lost or confused if you haven’t read Pursuing the Seasons of God. In Pursuing the Seasons of God I shared from the Word and from visitations how the Lord taught me to be sensitive to His realm, and to move with His timing.

Knowing the Ways of God continues my experiences but explains more about the ways of God rather than how He leads us directly. My heart’s cry since I was a teenager has been Psalm 103:7, "He made known His ways unto Moses; His acts to the children of Israel." I’ve had a hunger for knowing His ways, the reason behind the reason rather than seeing His acts or miracles, most of my life. I believe if we know His ways we will see His acts.

My hope, Reader, is that you will discover missing keys to your spiritual walk which will open doors to a closer and more intimate relationship with the Lord.

    The Tour of Heaven Continued

You may recall in Pursuing the Seasons of God that while I was in prayer I saw my angel’s forearm appear above me, reaching down to me, and heard his voice say, Take hold of my hand. As I did so he took me to heaven. We flew over the walls of the heavenly city and came to rest in a grassy area near a part of the River of Life. While standing there I saw a rustle in the grass coming towards us, and just before it jumped over the river I saw that it was our golden retriever, Abby. She had been hit and killed by a school bus on January 3, 1989. Accompanying her was Tilly, a pet squirrel monkey I had for about a year or so before she died when I was about fourteen years old.

As I looked into Abby’s eyes suddenly I understood what she was thinking and actually heard her think to me, Where are Barb and the boys? I was startled as you can imagine and snapped my head to look at my angel. He said, In heaven you can take part in the unlimited knowledge of God as needed, and it’s never misused, nor can it be, because it is governed by Love. I snapped back to look at my dog and thought, They’re not here now, it’s just me. She thought, Okay, turned and ran back to where she had come from, jumping the river, then angling off to her right. As we watched her run my angel said, The children really enjoy them.

The Bible describes Jesus as coming back on a white horse and the people who accompany Him are on horseback as well (Revelation 19:11,14). Elijah was taken into heaven in a chariot pulled by horses (2 Kings 2:11), so we know that horses are in heaven. Based on that and the many times Jesus spoke to people and said, according to your faith be it unto you, Barb, the boys and I had asked the Lord to have Abby, our golden retriever in heaven. I was thankful for His faithfulness. To this day I wonder if He recreated Abby and Tilly, or made exact duplicates but I really don’t care. Just to know they are there is enough and the rest I leave in His hands.

Tilly was my pet squirrel monkey that I had for a little more than a year when I was fourteen years old. Squirrel monkeys are only about ten to twelve inches tall. She used to sit on my shoulders at the back of my head with one foot at the base of my neck on the left, and one foot at the base of my neck on the right. She would ride there, looking over my head and holding on to my hair. When I look back on my life I see the Lord’s provision in giving me this pet during that time. My mom and dad had just divorced and I had not yet been born again. Tilly was someone I could care for and love. She provided hours of love and amusement for me.

One day we noticed she was hunched over and in pain, so we headed for the vet, but we were too late. She died on my lap as we were driving. I still remember the four-way stop where she died and still think of her every time I’m at that intersection. The vet said she died of a blocked intestine and it looked like it was a congenital condition, which meant there was nothing we could have done.

A couple of years later, after I’d accepted the Lord, I stood over her gravesite and asked the Father to have her in heaven. I didn’t care if He recreated her or made a duplicate, that didn’t matter. I just wanted her in heaven because she had meant so much to me. So years later when I was given this tour of heaven, I was thrilled to see her again. She seemed happy to see me as well, assuming her perch on the back of my neck, and letting me pet her for a few moments as if no time had passed at all.

The City of the Living God

As my angel and I stood there watching Abby and Tilly run back through the grass, with Tilly riding Abby like a person might ride a horse, I looked around at my surroundings. Stretching out in front of us and to our left was an open, grassy area with trees scattered here and there. The grass seemed to be roughly a foot or so tall and I didn’t see anyone else in that area. The ground rose to a small hill about a quarter mile away so I couldn’t see beyond. I noticed that to my right there was a low wall with houses on the other side of it. The horizon was brighter there than the rest of the sky, and the brightness was made up of many different colors. I assumed the throne was in that direction.

We started walking to our right, generally following the direction Abby and Tilly had gone, which seemed to lead back to the city along and over the small wall to our right. When we came to the river we just jumped over it with one giant step, not a running jump or even a hop, but rather a giant step, not breaking stride, even though the distance was probably close to fifty feet. Somehow I knew that if I had wanted to, I could have just walked on the water to the other side, or even played down in the water. It made me think that when Jesus walked on the water of the Sea of Galilee it may not have been a first time occurrence for Him.

I began to rethink my ideas about heaven. Scriptures I had seen before suddenly made sense.

Hebrews 12:22–23 says in part: But ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels...and to the spirits of just men made perfect.

Revelation 21:2 says: ...I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Until that moment, I had not fully understood that the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, the holy city, or the New Jerusalem is a city similar to cities on the earth. It is the city of God, His capital, if you will. I also realized that this city—heaven—will one day leave its present location to come down to earth to be the capital of the earth (Revelation 21:2).

The thoughts I grew up with that I would spend eternity in heaven, or that it might be boring and I didn’t even know how to pluck a harp, were not completely true. Heaven is a city that is coming to earth! This great city according to Revelation 21:16–17 measures some 1,500 miles square with walls over 200 feet high (count up twenty floors on a tall building to get an idea). One day it will descend through earth’s atmosphere to rest somewhere on earth, probably over present day Israel and the Middle East.

Though some believe the city to be foursquare like a cube, I didn’t see that. Some have suggested that a pyramid would also describe a city that has length as large as the breadth, but I just saw a square city. It was made square by four walls each roughly 1500 miles long with gates of pearl spaced equal distance apart along the walls, which again were about as tall as a twenty story building.

But consider an area that covers 1,500 miles. Imagine a city whose borders east to west could stretch from New York, to nearly Denver, and from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Miami, Florida north to south! Now imagine watching that city descend through the atmosphere. Its walls shine with the glory of God and its buildings are made with a gold so pure they’re nearly clear. Revelation 21:18 says the city was pure gold, like unto clear (pure) glass.

That is the scene the apostle John saw in Revelation 21 and this was the city I was walking in! It seemed so completely normal, but at the same time exciting, like visiting somewhere that felt like home, but without the experience of actually living there. It really was just a big city. People were walking around. Generally, the streets I saw were narrower than in America although there were larger boulevards. It all seemed very comfortable, normal and natural. It’s no wonder a dog and a pet monkey could be in heaven. With heaven coming to earth, and animals being in abundance on the earth, how strange it would be if the capital city didn’t have any!

With a city as big as heaven, any part of it that a person on earth is allowed to see in brief glimpses like near death experiences or visions or visitations can only be a small part of the whole. It would be like someone landing in Central Park in New York, seeing one end of that briefly, and then walking a few blocks into the city and saying that all of the United States was like that! As much as a person might see in a brief tour of New York, there is no way they could speak of the whole of the United States. Think of the changes in landscape between New York and Denver, or Miami and Minneapolis. In the same way, 1 Corinthians 13:9 states that we know in part, and we prophesy in part. There are many examples of people who say they’ve been to heaven, but we can see that while some elements will be common to all visits, each person’s visit will vary slightly.

    Children in Heaven

We crossed the low wall through a gate that looked and felt like it was made of black cast iron or other similar material. It was heavy and well made, much like a small gate leading to and from a garden, and I saw where Abby and Tilly were headed. They went into a one story building and shortly thereafter dozens of children of grade school age came running out, talking and yelling to each other, just like you might see at recess time at a school on the earth. My angel told me that there is still organized learning that goes on in heaven. You see, people’s memories don’t suddenly become blank when they get to heaven and they don’t suddenly become spiritual giants.

Jesus described two men who had died in Luke 16:19–31 who talked to each other and Abraham. The rich man recalled his five brothers and their spiritual condition, his relationship with the beggar Lazarus, and more. And Jesus certainly hasn’t forgotten His disciples and the time He spent here on earth just because He ascended to heaven! Because He remembers, so will we. Relationships in the Lord are eternal.

When Jesus answered the Pharisees and Sadducees about husband and wife relationships in heaven (Matthew 22:23–33), He just said there wasn’t marriage in heaven, He didn’t say they wouldn’t know each other! My wife will still be my best friend in the ages to come. I will continue to love her as I do now. Here on earth we share momentary intimacy with each other, times when our hearts and souls seem to be united as one, but even these times are limited because of our lack of complete knowledge of our mate.

Imagine a society where people governed by love and entered into God’s unlimited knowledge of everyone can share an intimacy with others and the Lord
