    Prologue

How did everything go so bad in such a short time?

She reached to the envelope she put on the nightstand and picked up his letter. She sat up and held his pillow to her as she took the paper out and began to read.

    My beautiful Jade,

I am smiling as I write this because I am watching you and the girls sleeping on the couch and it’s the most amazing image I could ever see. We all came back from a walk and you let them play dress up and put makeup on and the sound of their laughter filled the house. It is the sound of heaven and I feel so incredibly blessed that you have given me these two blessings.

But then I think about my life and I realize that you are my heaven. You are the greatest reward I could have ever wished to have and loving you has been my crowning achievement. When I met you, I was at the lowest point a man could find himself at and you came into my life and my heart and just made it better. I know it’s a simple idea, but you have made me better. I am a better man because you love me. I’m a better son because you taught me patience. I am a better father because you allow me to be your partner in every way. I am a better soldier because you have given me security. I am a better human being because you trusted me with your heart.

There are not enough words in the world that I could use to explain how much I love you. I need you to believe me when I say that I will come back to you. I know it seems dire because you’re reading this letter and that means something bad happened. What I can tell you is that unless you see my body, I will be fighting. I am not asking you to remain alone and sad, but I give you my word that I will move heaven and earth to come home to you and the girls.

I was not given such blessings to let them go without a fight.

And I will never stop fighting for you.

    My love.

    My heart.

    My Jade.

    WAML,

    Mike.

Jade put the letter down and felt a new resolve build from within. She knew he was alive. He was right. There was no proof. She wouldn’t stop fighting.

She wiped her tears and stood up, getting ready for the girls to come home. She heard the doorbell ring and she smiled.

Their daughters were the biggest blessings in their lives and Jade would stay strong for them. She went to let them in when a sight stopped her heart.

Her girls weren’t at the door.

    The Army Casualty Officers were.

    Chapter One:

Naomi looked at her parents and tried to follow what they were saying.

So you were kidnapped and hurt?

Brittany took her daughter’s hand and held it.

I was, but it was a long time ago and everything is fine now. We just wanted you to know, but it’s nothing you need to worry about.

Tommy smiled at his daughter and nodded.

You know how much we love you, right?

Naomi nodded and looked at her hands, her mind racing.

    What is it? Brittany asked.

    You weren’t just kidnapped, right?

Tommy looked at his wife and she sighed.

It doesn’t really matter what happened back then.

Yes it does. You are HIV positive and it’s because of that, wasn’t it? They hurt you in that way? You were raped? she asked, her tears falling. Why didn’t you tell me?

Brittany wiped her own eyes and exhaled.

Because that moment isn’t who I am. It’s a moment in my life that was horrific and scary and then it was over. I have healed and found the best and most important reason to be happy and that is your daddy and you. My life is amazing and that’s what we need to focus on. What happened before is the past and I don’t want you to worry.

Naomi looked at Tommy and went to say something, but stopped.

What is it, baby? What’s on your mind?

    Nothing. May I be excused?

Of course, he said and she took her crutch and went to her room.

Brittany put her face in her hands and Tommy pulled her to him.

    It’s okay, he said.

No it isn’t. She’s crushed. What have I done?

He held her and they sat there for a few minutes before Naomi came back into the room.

I wasn’t going to say anything, but I knew already. Not all of it, but a lot.

    They both looked at her.

    What? Brittany wiped her eyes.

I saw the interview you gave to that reporter before I was born.

Tommy looked at her. They had tried so hard to prevent her from seeing any of the press.

How did you see it? When? Why didn’t you tell us? Brittany asked.

I got your password for the wifi and the block was easy to open. It was about three months ago and I didn’t tell you because I knew you didn’t want me to know. I didn’t know why you wouldn’t have told me.

Tommy ran his hand through his hair.

How did you even know to look for it?

    She rolled her eyes.

I may be with the dumb kids in school, but I’m not a total idiot.

Naomi, you aren’t with the dumb kids. I hate when you say that, Brittany said.

Well I am. I’m 13 and I have to be in a class with kids who can’t solve simple problems. They always look to me for help because I’m far ahead of them. Anyway, one day, Jimmy showed me the headline from the paper when you gave your interview. He said his mom had it and said it was from a friend. I knew it was you and I looked it up and watched it.

Brittany got up and paced a little.

I wish you had told us you saw it, Tommy said.

I wish you told me what happened. I wish you trusted me.

We do trust you. This isn’t something I wanted you to ever know, Brittany said.

Mommy, I love you. I wish you believed in me like I believe in you.

What? How can you say that? I believe in you, Naomi. You are the most amazing person in the world, Brittany felt her tears fall.

I know. I didn’t mean it like that. I just know that you have a lot to handle in your life and you never tell me about it. You handle everything and never let it stop you and I want to learn how to do that. You and daddy are so smart and brave and strong and I want to be like that, too. I don’t want you to worry about telling me things. I want to make you both proud.

Tommy and Brittany hugged her tightly and she squealed as they squished her.

We are so incredibly proud of you, Mini Red. You are the best thing we’ve ever done in this world, Tommy said.

I look at you and I can’t believe I was blessed with such a strong and intelligent daughter. You are simply my hero, Brittany said.

Naomi hugged her and Tommy wiped his eyes.

You know; if you want to move out of the special class, we can see if that will work. I want you feel challenged.

    Naomi nodded.

I think I can do it. I want to be smarter.

Brittany smoothed her daughter’s red hair back.

You are smart and you don’t need to do anything more than be yourself. It’s not a competition.

    Naomi shrugged.

It kind of is. I want to go to college and I need to push myself. I’ll be in high school soon and I want to be with the rest of the kids. I don’t want to always be held back.

    High school? Tommy said.

In another year, daddy, she said. You have to get used to it.

No I don’t. Maybe we can home school.

Brittany laughed and shook her head.

Come on. Let’s get dinner started while daddy thinks about things.

They walked out when Tommy turned to look at them.

    High school?

Bill walked with his son to the park and sat on a bench. He looked at his 13 year old and wondered how he got so lucky. His son was a sweet and sensitive young man.

I needed to talk to you about something and I want you to understand why I think it’s necessary.

David looked at him and his blue eyes were watery.

    Are you leaving?

    Bill smiled and nodded.

I’m going on a trip to try and help find some answers. I hope it will only be a week or two, but sometimes things take longer.

    Where are you going?

    To Germany.

Okay. David looked at his hands and was quiet.

    Do you have any questions?

Well it’s obvious that this is more than you’re saying because if you were just going out of town, you wouldn’t have brought me to the park to tell me. But you didn’t really say anything, so I don’t know what to ask.

    Bill chuckled and David shrugged.

You know that Uncle Mike and I have been friends for a long time, right?

Yes. You were in the Army together

Right. We served two tours in Iraq.

That’s when you hurt your leg?

    Bill nodded.

Yeah. Uncle Mike was hurt pretty badly, too. We lost eight of our friends in an explosion.

An explosion? How did you get away? David’s eyes were wide and he stared at his dad.

I don’t know. Somehow, I woke up and found Mike and we got away.

David smiled and Bill raised his eyebrows.

    What?

You carried him out and were almost dead, weren’t you? I’ve heard people talk. Why don’t you tell me the truth?

Bill sighed and looked at his hands.

Because the truth is I lost eight men I was in charge of. There is nothing in that to make anyone proud.

But you saved Mike, David said. That’s really important. If you didn’t, then Eden and Sara wouldn’t exist. They irritate me, but our lives would be pretty boring without them

    Bill smiled.

That’s true. Uncle Mike loves his girls, and part of my reason for going is to help them. Aunt Jade and the twins need to know we are doing everything we can. We have to try and help.

Will it be dangerous? David asked.

    Bill looked at his son.

    I hope not.

    Will you bring your gun?

I always carry my gun when I’m working. Why do you ask that?

    David shrugged.

    Have you killed people?

Bill stood up and paced a little.

I’m sorry dad, David said as he walked to Bill. You just never talk about your time at war and I have so many questions. I don’t know why you don’t tell me anything. I’m almost an adult. I can take it.

Yes, Bill said as he looked his son in the eye. I have killed people.

David held his gaze and nodded.

I worked in a special field. I was a sniper.

So you shot people from far away?

I protected our men and completed my assignment. It was never a goal to kill people, but to complete our mission and always with minimal casualties.

David was enthralled by his dad’s explanation.

    Weren’t you scared?

    Bill smiled.

Yes. I was scared to leave your mom for so long. I was scared to be so far from home. I was scared of missing you too much because you were just a baby. I was scared of the unknown.

David walked with Bill back to the bench and they sat down.

So how did you get through it? How will I get through it if you’re gone for so long?

Your mom and sister will help you. Josie is so much like your mom, David. She is funny and smart and she will be a great distraction when your mind wanders. Your mom will help because she and I, we’re connected. Whenever you miss me, you just talk to her and she will know what to say. But I am not going to be gone for long, so it will be fine. I just need you to know how proud I am of you. I couldn’t ask for a better son.

David hugged him and Bill smiled.

Let’s go see the ladies, David said and Bill laughed.

But I didn’t think Bee was coming over.

    David blushed and Bill laughed.

Stop teasing me. Bee has a million boyfriends and I’m not one of them.

Bill ruffled his hair and draped his arm around his son’s shoulders.

    Yet.

    David smiled as they left.

Stephanie walked out to the backyard where Sabrina sat in the tree she loved. She was reading and Stephanie wiped her eyes as she approached.

Bee? Do you have a minute to talk?

Sabrina smiled a dimpled grin at her mom and immediately frowned when she saw Stephanie’s sad face.

Mom? What’s wrong? Are you feeling okay? Is daddy? Tess?

    Stephanie smiled.

Everyone is fine. I didn’t mean to worry you. I just wanted to talk to you about something and I guess my memories are making me a little sad.

Bee moved to the chairs they had on the deck and Stephanie sat next to her.

I need to tell you about a man named Josh and the role he played in my past.

Josh? Was he an old boyfriend? Bee smiled.

    Stephanie wiped her eyes.

No. He was a terrible man and he did terrible things. What I learned from that time in my life is that I am so much stronger than what anyone tries to make me believe. I have such a deep respect for you and Tessa because of the strong and fierce women you are both becoming.

Mom? You’re scaring me. What did this man do to you?

    Stephanie smiled.

He made me doubt my worth. He made me believe I was worthless and he almost ruined any chance I had to be the woman I always believed I could be.

    Did daddy know him, too?

Yes, but not as long as I did. The reason I am telling you about this, is because of Uncle Mike and Uncle Bill.

I don’t understand, Bee said. Did they know him, too?

Yes, but now, Uncle Bill and Aunt Jade are going to German to try and find Uncle Mike. There is a man who will be helping them who used to work with Josh and I didn’t want you to find out about him from someone else.

    Is Josh there, too?

No. He’s dead. He died when you were almost four.

So why are you worried about him now?

I’m not. I’m upset because I didn’t want to have to tell you about him. I don’t want you to know anything about that part of my life because it isn’t something I’m proud of. I want you to look at me and see a mother you can count on, and not the woman I was back then.

Bee smiled and took Stephanie’s hand.

How can I see anyone but my mom? You are the best mom I know and nothing will ever change that. That Josh man is lucky he’s dead because if he came here, I would teach him a thing or two.

    Stephanie laughed.

    Is that right?

Oh yes. I’m pretty strong. I’ve been working on my soccer kick and I can do damage.

Stephanie smoothed her daughter’s hair back. She needed to tell her more.

I have no doubt you could.

Julie was cleaning up around the house after Bill got home with David. The kids were in their rooms and she was waiting to hear about Bill and David’s talk. The doorbell interrupted her and she went to open it.

Julie opened the door and saw Jade standing there, her face ashen.

Can I come in? I didn't know what else to do.

Julie nodded and opened the door, Jade all but falling into her arms.

What happened? What is it? Julie asked as Jade cried.

Bill came in and saw the scene, rushing to help.

    What is it?

The casualty officers came to my house. They found his body. They said he is being sent to Germany for processing, she said brokenly. I don’t even know what that means.

Julie held onto her and Bill felt his own tears come to his eyes.

Where are the twins? Bill asked.

They should be home soon. I don't know how to tell them. I don't know what to do. I don't think I can live in this world without him, she said and sank to the ground, Julie holding her.

Bill picked up his phone to call his sister and he tried to hold himself together.

Mike was his best friend, his family.

Okay, we're going to help you, Julie said softly. Bill will have someone meet the girls and bring them here.

No. I need to go to them. They are going to be so scared if I’m not there. I need to tell them the truth. I need to be there for them, Jade said as she stood up, her whole body shaking.

    Julie nodded.

Then let’s do that, she said.

You’ll come with me? Jade asked.

Julie looked at Bill and his eyes were swimming.

Of course I will. Come on.

Bill walked them out and went to make a few calls of his own.

    *******

They’re sure it’s him? Brittany asked Bill. Yes. I understand. Okay. I’ll talk to him.

She hung up and Tommy stood there, waiting.

They found his body. It’s being brought to Germany and Bill is going to meet him there and accompany him home. I’d like to go with him. He’s my brother and this is his best friend. There won’t be any danger, but I don’t want him to go alone.

    Tommy nodded.

Of course. I think that’s a good idea. How is Jade?

    Brittany sighed.

Julie was going home with her so they can tell the girls. I can’t imagine how hard this is going to be for all of them. I know she felt he was alive. How is she going to get through this?

Tommy pulled her into his arms.

I don’t know, but we will do whatever we can to help her.

    Chapter Two:

Jade sat in the family room while Julie fed Peeps for her. They were waiting for the twins to get home and it was excruciating.

Bill just texted me that he and Brittany will be leaving in a few hours. We will know more after they land, Julie handed Jade some tea and sat down.

    Is Elizabeth taking them?

    No. They are flying commercial.

Jade looked at her and there was a simple emptiness behind her eyes.

How will they bring him home? Does he have to ride in the bottom of the plane?

    Julie sighed.

Bill is going to make sure everything is done with the utmost respect. He won’t let anything go wrong.

The women looked at each other, knowing so much had already gone so wrong.

The door flew open and two blonde tornadoes ran in, both excitedly talking about what happened at camp.

Hello! Hello! Peeps bobbed her head up and down and each girl laughed.

Hi Aunt Julie! We got to ride a horse today! It was awesome! Sara said and Eden froze when she saw her mom.

    Mommy? What’s wrong?

Sara turned to look at Jade and she joined her sister’s concern.

Can you both sit with us for a minute? I need to talk to you about something, Jade said softly.

The girls sat down and Julie sat with Jade.

We got some news about your daddy.

Is he coming home? Will he be here in time for our birthday? Sara asked.

Jade felt a little more of her resolve crumble and Julie held her hand.

You both know how much your daddy and I love you and how if there had been any way for him to be here, he would have. Being your dad was his best and most important job.

Eden looked at her and Julie felt like Mike was in the room.

    He’s dead, isn’t he?

    Sara looked at her sister.

What? No he isn’t. He promised he would come home.

Jade reached to take each girl’s hand in hers.

Your daddy passed away. I’m so sorry.

What? What do you mean? You said he was missing but we would find him. You said he loved us and would fight to come home. How is he dead? Sara asked.

Eden walked over to Jade and hugged her tightly. Jade felt her tears fall as she cried and Sara began to cry where she sat. Julie moved to her and pulled the little girl to her and held her.

They four of them held each other for a while and the girls sat back, stunned.

    What happens now? Eden asked.

Uncle Bill and Aunt Brittany are going to get your daddy and bring him home to us. We will have a beautiful service and say our goodbyes, Jade said.

And then what? How do we move on without our daddy? Sara asked in a tiny voice.

Jade had no answer and Julie looked at them.

Both of you look at me for a minute. When I was a few years older than both of you, I lost my mom and dad in an accident. I was suddenly alone and I didn’t know what to do or how I would make it through each day.

What happened to them? Eden asked.

Julie wiped Eden’s cheeks and smiled.

They were in a car accident. I was 12.

What did you do? Sara asked.

I learned that my family was the best and most important resource I had. My brother and Jack were never going to leave me alone or let me down and they never have. My mom and dad raised me to be able to live the life I wanted and it was the hardest thing I ever did, but I lived, for them. I wanted to make them proud and I didn’t want them to worry. You both are going to do that, too. It’s okay to be sad and angry, but you need to remember what is most important. Your daddy loved you and he loved your mom and he needs to know his girls will be okay. He would give anything to be here with all of you, but since he can’t, we will make sure his dreams stay alive.

Jade wiped her eyes and nodded.

I love you both so much. We are going to get through this, okay? We are going to be okay.

The two girls hugged her and Julie felt her heart ache. Mike deserved his family. This was simply wrong.

    ******

Jack drove to the park near their house and saw Tessa sitting by the water. He texted Stephanie that he found her and they would be home soon. When he got home from work, Stephanie had been with Bee and they realized Tessa should have been home. Her bike was gone, but she never told anyone where she went.

Tess? Why didn’t you tell your mom where you were going? he asked as he walked to the water and sat down on the bench next to her.

Hi dad. Mom and Bee were busy and I just needed some air.

You should have left a note, he said as he looked at his tall daughter. She was the spitting image of Stephanie, but had her father’s legs. She looked far older than her 11 years. That worried Jack.

Whatever. You found me, so all is well.

He raised his eyebrows at her.

    Did you just whatever me?

She looked at him and her green eyes filled with tears.

Did you want me to be a boy? Were you disappointed that I was born me?

Jack felt a dagger hit his heart with her words.

How could you think that? Tess, where is this coming from?

Never mind. I’ll be home in a few minutes.

Jack was stumped. Tessa was the most easy going child and she never had an attitude with anyone.

I need for you to tell me what’s bothering you. I don’t know why you are acting like I’m the enemy.

Tessa shrugged and pushed her glasses back up her nose.

    "Mom was telling Bee about
