    Introduction

The word ‘advent’ is most generally defined as the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event. As the Christmas season approaches, most of us in the Christian community, know what that notable ‘event’ is…It’s the birth of Christ. The fulfilling of years of prophecy and the star that flooded the earth with hope. Advent is about the birth of a baby in a manger…a baby that would one day strip us of the sins we could no longer bear.

And certainly Advent is that very thing. However, just as I tell my children on long trips, travel is so much more than just the end destination. Many times it’s the JOURNEY that matters. The spilled drinks, the laughter about what someone said, the rest stops and the hotel’s freezing swimming pool that was awesome fun anyway! Journeys are the true moments that take us from here to there. They are the marshmallows in our hot chocolate…the ones that melt slowly through the entire mug and bring us to the bottom with only a gooey mustache to show for it. Journeys require work in order to reach our destination unharmed, but if done well, we arrive a little better off than when we left.

Matthew 2: 9-11 tells us that the wise men saw a star in the sky and began a journey. They knew the star signaled the advent of the King of the Jews, so they traveled until the star led them to the home of Jesus. Scripture says, They could hardly contain themselves. They were in the right place! They had arrived at the right time! After all that searching and travel, the wise men had come to their resting place.

No matter where our paths have gone during the year, Advent allows us to follow the light so that we too may hardly contain ourselves because we have found our resting place. Each Advent season we have the opportunity to experience that moment over and over again. May our advent journey together be just as joyous. This is the right place and THIS is the right time. So now take a deep breath, sit down, and let’s follow the star together.

The first stop in our journey is already close by…our home and our hearts. In all the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season we must consciously make room for God and welcome him in. Like many, my family gets excited about decorating for Christmas. As soon as Thanksgiving is over, we hit the ground running to pack up the fall and bring out the sparkle. But first things first. The center of our Christmas decorating is always the Christmas tree. In the past few years we have opted to get a real tree so there is the added adventure of going out to the Christmas tree farm and finding the perfect tree that
