    Three Rivers

Okay, Veronica. Come give Mommy a kiss so she can go to work.

Lori Ann Williams finished securing her blonde hair into a ponytail with a green Scrunchie as she made her way through the mobile home to the living room. She glanced at the clock on the cable box next to the television and grimaced. Shit! It’s almost eleven. I’m running late.

Well, if you would get your nose out of those books... Her mother Sylvia sat in her recliner, feet up and ankles crossed. The older woman paused in the middle of her crocheting to pull at her yarn, taking that opportunity to send an admonishing look in Lori Ann’s direction.  And I wish you wouldn’t keep this baby up so late. She doesn’t have to see you off every night. She should be in bed.

You know she would just throw a fit if I did that, Lori Ann said. It’s bad enough I get home just as she’s waking up and I have to go to bed, but taking these accounting classes burns up the other half of my day and before I know it I’ve got to go to work again. She squatted down and held out her arms as her three year old daughter abandoned her toys to participate in their nightly ritual. The toddler threw her arms around her mother’s neck and pressed a wet kiss to her cheek. Lori Ann hugged her tight. Big, tight squeezes, enough to last Mommy until tomorrow morning! She pulled back and planted three loud kisses on the little girl’s forehead. Mwah!  Mwah!  Mwah!  I love you.

Love you, too, Mommy, Veronica said. She sounded tired, her brown eyes sleepy.

My sweet girl. Giving Veronica’s soft golden curls a tousle, Lori Ann released her and stood up. All right, you be good for Granny.  She smiled.  And right to bed as soon as I walk out the door. No fussing. Okay?

    Okay, Veronica said.

It’s supposed to get down into the upper thirties tonight, Sylvia called out to her.  Possibility of flurries. She let out a long, loud sigh. Hardly seems like we have spring or fall anymore. It always goes from winter right to summer, cold to hot, and then summer right into winter. Hot to freezing cold.

Welcome to Michigan, Lori Ann said with a wry chuckle. She retrieved her down-filled jacket out of the coat closets and pulled it on over her blue and brown plaid flannel shirt. I don’t think we’re going to get any snow just yet, Mom. It’s supposed to warm up again by the weekend, and stay that way through Halloween.  She paused to look at Veronica again.  "Although it would be okay if it did snow, because someone is dressing up as her favorite character from Frozen and going trick-or-treating for her first time this year. Right, baby?"

At the mention of the upcoming holiday, Veronica gasped and threw her arms in the air with renewed exuberance.  Yeah! she crowed. Trick-or-treat!  Mommy, I can be Elsa, right?

You sure can! Lori Ann replied, wrinkling her turned-up nose. Can you sing Elsa’s song?

Yes! Veronica said, and immediately started to belt out a three year old’s rendition of the tune’s famous chorus. "Let it go...

Oh, hell, Sylvia groaned, dropping her hands to her lap. Don’t get her all wound up, now, she’s supposed to be going to bed in a few minutes! She set her crochet hook and yarn aside, and lowered the recliner’s foot rest. With a grunt, she pulled herself up out of the chair. And thanks for getting her started with that damn song again. Lord knows I’ll probably have it stuck in my head for the rest of my life. She hauled Veronica up into her arms and settled her on one hip.

Okay, honey. It’s bedtime. Enough singing. She carried the child over to Lori Ann.  Say goodnight to Mommy, now.

    G’night, Mommy.

Lori Ann could not resist leaning in to give her daughter another kiss on the cheek. Good night, sweetheart.

Sylvia smiled. Now tell her ‘get your ass to work or you’ll be late.’

Mom! Lori Ann hissed, reaching out to cover her daughter’s mouth with two fingers before those words could leave her lips. Her brown eyes flashed a warning at her mother. Jesus!  Don’t tell her to say that! Shaking her head, she grabbed her purse and car keys off the dining room table, and started for the front door. I’ll see you in the morning. She waved to Veronica and gave her one last smile. Night-night, baby!

She managed to get to work with seconds to spare. Parking her old Ford Escort in side lot, she entered the gas station convenience store through the front door and called out a greeting to the manager and owner. Hey, Walter. Sorry I’m late...
