About this ebook
Have you ever wanted to write a Steampunk story but didn't know where to start?
Then this is the book for you! If you want to write about dashing heroes and daring heroines rushing headlong into adventures that will make the reader quake in their boots, then come inside and find your inspiration!
This illustrated, colorable workbook has two parts - an overview of the genre and story starters. Part I discusses the Steampunk genre, themes, heroes, heroines and works that have already been done in the genre, and gives advice on how to build a credible Steampunk world. Part II gives 101 different scenarios from which you can start a Steampunk story in any genre.
There are story starters on the world, such as government, money, airships, and battles, and story starters on the heroes, heroines, and villains who populate that world. The story starters take a variety of forms: first, second, and third person, narrative and dialogue, long and short, and a range of emotions from humor to terror. Something in this book is guaranteed to strike your fancy!
Here are some examples:
Battles
My eyes burned as I watched the militia sack the village below. They killed my parents and all my friends. Even my dog was probably dead. Their screams ripped through my eardrums and I cursed my father for placing me aboard this airship. I should be down there with them. I clenched my hands into fists and vowed...
Technology
"What have you done?" The mechanic's spectacles shook as he yelled, and his white whiskers quivered in rage. "That mad scientist will be back in minutes with his particulate radiation machine — and you've broken our only weapon against it!"
Romance
I kissed him one last time, knowing he wouldn’t feel it. The drug I’d given him wouldn’t wear off until morning. But by then I'd be long gone, aboard an airship halfway across the ocean. “Good-bye, dear Julian. You'll always have my heart. But you can’t keep me from...”
Aeon Igni
From spaceships to airships, captains to cyborgs, Aeon is always trying to reach for the life beyond ordinary in her writing. She grew up on an entertainment regimen of Art Bell every night and the X-Files on Sundays, which might have influenced her writing. Just a bit.Aeon's non-fiction background includes teaching English abroad in Korea and China for over eight years. She taught all ages, from kindergarten to continuing adult education at private English schools and three universities. She learned that encouraging students to use their imagination to research, discuss and write about their interests is the best way to ensure academic and personal growth. In fiction, Aeon writes predominately novellas and short stories, indulging in her passions for science fiction, romance, fast ships, and heroic men. When not writing, you can usually find her at Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, or trying to break into Area 51 - because you just *know* there is a UFO under there.

Reviews for 101 Story Starters for Steampunk
1 rating1 review
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A terrific introduction to steampunk for those who wish to write their own stories. I especially liked the list of books for future reading, along with the excellent character descriptions. This is a good, short alternative to some of the larger, longer-winded books on the subject.

Part I: The Steampunk Genre
Precursors to Steampunk literature began in the 1800s, when authors began to imagine using technology to travel to the moon, or the center of the earth, or inventing other amazing technological discoveries. When Steampunk was first written by authors such as Mary Shelley and Jules Verne, the idea was mainly the invention of an alternative present or an alternative future. The stories featured impossible inventions, daring adventures, and not a small dose of fantasy and futuristic elements.
Today, Steampunk authors have largely kept to the historical time periods when the genre was first created. Elements include Victorian or Victorian-based fashion, alternative history and technology based upon steam power or those that were in use at the time of the story, liberal use of gadgets and clockwork elements, and a large dose of fantasy.
There are various definitions of Steampunk, including the following:
Modern Steampunk literature is usually science fiction and fantasy set in and around the Victorian era. — Brian J. Robb
A genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology. — Google
A subgenre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the nineteenth century. — Wikipedia
Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction, which means that its readers can be more meticulous and demanding than the average reader. They expect detail in every aspect of the world, from technology to culture. Special attention to worldbuilding will enable you to create a world that your readers will remember. So do your research!
On the next few pages, we will discuss worldbuilding, creating an alternative history, and major themes used in Steampunk literature.
Steampunk Themes
Steampunk has much to offer authors; it is exciting, romantic, and allows almost total creative freedom to build a world that is completely different than our own.
Readers of Steampunk, similar to readers of science fiction in general, are intelligent, often sophisticated in creative
