About this ebook

HOW TO RESCUE A RAKE:

Reject his marriage proposal

Nathaniel Sherringham has returned to Hawcombe Prior a changed man. Gone is the reckless rake who went out on a limb to propose to Diana Makepiece three years ago. Now Nate's mysterious new wealth has the town's rumor mill spinning. To stir things up (and get Diana's attention), Nate boldly announces his plans to marry "any suitable girl" under the age of 25.

Run away

Diana, now 27 and still single, is acutely aware of Nate's return. When her mother suggests a trip to visit a cousin in Bath, Diana leaps at the chance to escape the heartbreak and regret she can't help but feel in Nate's presence…and avoid his irritating charade to find a bride.

But for Nate, Diana has always been the one. He might just have to follow her to Bath and once again lay his heart on the line to win her attention—and her heart.

This book deserves a great review I don't have time for but if you in any way liked Jane Austen's Persuasion and deep intense longing, you'll want to show up for this one. It had the delightful feel from the first in the series but with a deeper heavier tone. The heroine gets a wee bit annoying with denial but the way the hero feels draw to her and can't believe no one else sees her the way he does was swoon-y goodness.

I really liked this book! But to be fair I'm not sure how much of that came from the book itself being funny and intriguing vs it being an almost direct plot copy of Persuasion. (I love Persuasion!) I really enjoyed the character of Diana throughout most of the book. I found her engaging and I liked that she was misunderstood as cold and aloof when really she wasn't. I liked that she struggled with her emotions and I liked that she had depth. However at the end of the book, within the last 40 pages or so, she undergoes such a huge personality change I really wanted to shout at the book "who the f*** are you?!?". Needless to say I was not fond of the "growth" she had. She went from an intelligent, smart, misunderstood woman to a impetuous child. Sherry I can't quite make up my mind on. I loved him on the one hand because of what I read during his internal monologues. He was devoted (though honestly I'm not quite sure what inspired such a deep devotion, but I digress) and he was funny and he was determined. All qualities that I like. However, because of what he actually said, I pretty much hate him. He was rude and condescending, not kind towards Diana. So, I'm not really sure what caused her to come round to him in the end.
And while I do love Persuasion and I think the author was clever about inventing a reason that passages of it should end up in her book I also think that there was way too much of this book padded with quotes pulled from Jane Austin's novel.
I guess bottom line, was that it was an enjoyable read. Just not because of its own merit but rather because of copying from Jane Austin. It wasn't original, but it was cleverly done. My biggest complaint is Diana's behavior at the end of the book. What happened to you Diana!? I miss the old you.
